Abstract

A multicarrier transceiver is provided with a sleep mode in which it idles with reduced power consumption when it is not needed to transmit or receive data. The full transmission and reception capabilities of the transceiver are quickly restored when needed, without requiring the full (and time-consuming) initialization commonly needed to restore such transceivers to operation after inactivity.

Claims (42)

1. A multicarrier transceiver operable to:

transmit or receive a message to enter a low power mode; and

enter the low power mode, wherein a transmitter portion of the transceiver is operable to not transmit data during the low power mode and a receiver portion of the transceiver is operable to receive data during the low power mode, wherein the transceiver is a device that is operable to transmit or receive internet and video data.

2. The transceiver of claim 1 , further operable to receive a signal for synchronization during the low power mode.

3. The multicarrier transceiver of claim 1 , further comprising one or more connected elements including a controller, clock, analog to digital converter, digital to analog converter, a detector, memory, an analog front end, an idle symbol generator, a converter, an FFT and an IFFT.

4. A multicarrier transceiver operable to:

transmit or receive a message to enter a low power mode;

enter the low power mode, wherein a transmitter portion of the transceiver is operable to not transmit data during the low power mode and a receiver portion of the transceiver is operable to receive data during the low power mode; and

store, during the low power mode, at least one parameter associated with a full power mode.

5. The transceiver of claim 4 , further operable to receive a signal for synchronization during the low power mode.

6. The multicarrier transceiver of claim 4 further comprising one or more connected elements including a controller, clock, analog to digital converter, digital to analog converter, a detector, memory, an analog front end, an idle symbol generator, a converter, an FFT and an IFFT.

7. A multicarrier transceiver operable to:

transmit or receive a message to enter a low power mode; and

enter the low power mode, wherein a receiver portion of the transceiver is operable to not receive data during the low power mode and a transmitter portion of the transceiver is operable to transmit data during the low power mode, wherein the transceiver is a device that is operable to transmit or receive internet and video data.

8. The transceiver of claim 7 , further operable to receive a signal for synchronization during the low power mode.

9. The multicarrier transceiver of claim 7 , further comprising one or more connected elements including a controller, clock, analog to digital converter, digital to analog converter, a detector, memory, an analog front end, an idle symbol generator, a converter, an FFT and an IFFT.

10. A multicarrier transceiver operable to:

transmit or receive a message to enter a low power mode;

enter the low power mode, wherein a receiver portion of the transceiver is operable to not receive data during the low power mode and a transmitter portion of the transceiver is operable to transmit data during the low power mode; and

store, during the low power mode, at least one parameter associated with a full power mode.

11. The transceiver of claim 10 , further operable to receive a signal for synchronization during the low power mode.

12. A multicarrier transceiver of claim 10 , further comprising one or more connected elements including a controller, clock, analog to digital converter, digital to analog converter, a detector, memory, an analog front end, an idle symbol generator, a converter, an FFT and an IFFT.

13. A method, in a multicarrier transceiver, comprising:

transmitting or receiving, during a full power mode, a multicarrier signal that comprises a cyclic prefix;

transmitting or receiving a message to enter a low power mode; and

entering the low power mode, wherein a transmitter portion of the transceiver does not transmit data during the low power mode and a receiver portion of the transceiver receives data during the low power mode.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising receiving a signal for synchronization during the low power mode.

15. A multicarrier transceiver operable to:

transmit or receive, during a full power mode, a multicarrier signal that comprises a cyclic prefix;

transmit or receive a message to enter a low power mode; and

enter the low power mode, wherein a transmitter portion of the transceiver is operable to not transmit data during the low power mode and a receiver portion of the transceiver is operable to receive data during the low power mode.

16. The transceiver of claim 15 , further operable to receive a signal for synchronization during the low power mode.

17. A method, in a multicarrier transceiver, comprising:

transmitting or receiving, during a full power mode, a multicarrier signal that comprises a cyclic prefix;

transmitting or receiving a message to enter a low power mode; and

entering the low power mode, wherein a receiver portion of the transceiver does not receive data during the low power mode and a transmitter portion of the transceiver transmits data during the low power mode.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising receiving a signal for synchronization during the low power mode.

19. A multicarrier transceiver operable to:

transmit or receive, during a full power mode, a multicarrier signal that comprises a cyclic prefix;

transmit or receive a message to enter a low power mode; and

enter the low power mode, wherein a receiver portion of the transceiver is operable to not receive data during the low power mode and a transmitter portion of the transceiver is operable to transmit data during the low power mode.

20. The transceiver of claim 19 , further operable to receive a signal for synchronization during the low power mode.
