Abstract

An electronic system is presented which includes a remote control device and a first electronic device. In one embodiment, the remote control device is configured to accept a user input signifying a command for a second electronic device, as well as generate the command for the second electronic device, and an indication of the command. In another embodiment, the remote control device is configured to accept a user input that causes a mode change of the remote control device, wherein the mode identifies one of a plurality of electronic devices that receive commands from the remote control device. The remote control device is also configured to transmit the command to the second electronic device, if applicable, and transmit the indication of the command or mode change to the first electronic device. The first electronic device is configured to receive and process the indication to alter operation of the first electronic device.

Claims (27)

1. An electronic system, comprising:

a remote control device; and

a first electronic device,

wherein the remote control device is configured to accept a user input signifying a command for a second electronic device, generate the command for the second electronic device and a distinct code for an indication of the command for the first electronic device, transmit the command for the second electronic device together with the distinct code for the indication of the command for the first electronic device appended thereto to the second electronic device and the first electronic device, the distinct code for the indication of the command for the first electronic device being different from the command for the second electronic device, and

wherein the first electronic device is configured to receive the command for the second electronic device with the distinct code for the indication of the command for the first electronic device appended thereto, and process the code for the first electronic device by carrying out at least one of terminating and postponing a standby mode of the first electronic device.

2. The electronic system of claim 1 wherein:

the first electronic device comprises one of a satellite broadcast receiver, a cable broadcast receiver, and an over-the-air terrestrial broadcast receiver; and

the second electronic device comprises a display device in communication with the first electronic device.

3. The electronic system of claim 1 wherein the first electronic device is further configured to process the code for the first electronic device by transmitting a signal to the second electronic device, the signal causing the second electronic device to display information associated with the code.

4. The electronic system of claim 1 wherein the first electronic device is further configured to process the code for the first electronic device by transmitting a second code for a third electronic device to the third electronic device, the second code for the third electronic device being different from the command.

5. The electronic system of claim 1 wherein the first electronic device is further configured to process the code for the first electronic device by providing information related to one or more audiovisual programs available via the first electronic device to the second electronic device.

6. The electronic system of claim 5 wherein the information related to one or more audiovisual programs is provided as at least one of a static video screen and a video channel.

7. The electronic system of claim 1 wherein the remote control device transmits the command for the second electronic device with the code for the first electronic appended thereto by way of at least one of an ultra-high frequency signal, an infrared signal, and an ultrasonic signal.

8. The electronic system of claim 1 wherein the command comprises one of turning on the second electronic device, turning off the second electronic device, modifying a volume output of the second electronic device, selecting a channel of the second electronic device, and accessing a menu of the second electronic device.

9. A method for informing a first electronic device concerning control of a second electronic device, the method comprising:

accepting a user input at a remote control device, wherein the input signifies a command for the second electronic device;

generating the command for the second electronic device in the remote control device;

generating a distinct code for an indication of the command for the first electronic device in the remote control device, the distinct code the indication of the command for the first electronic device being different from the command for the second electronic device;

transmitting the command for the second electronic device together with the distinct code for the indication of the command for the first electronic device appended thereto from the remote control device to the second electronic device and the first electronic device;

receiving the command for the second electronic device and the distinct code for the indication of the command for the first electronic device appended thereto at the first electronic device; and

processing the distinct code for the indication of the command for the first electronic device in the first electronic device by carrying out at least one of terminating and postponing a standby mode of the first electronic device.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

transmitting a signal associated with the code from the first electronic device to the second electronic device;

receiving the signal at the second electronic device; and

displaying information associated with the code for the first electronic device at the second electronic device, in response to receiving the signal at the second electronic device.

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising transmitting a second code for a third electronic device from the first electronic device to the third electronic device in response to processing the first code for the first electronic device, the second code for the third electronic device being different from the command.

12. The method of claim 9 wherein the command comprises one of turning on the second electronic device, turning off the second electronic device, modifying a volume output of the second electronic device, selecting a channel of the second electronic device, and accessing a menu of the second electronic device.
