Abstract

A fish weighing system that includes a housing having a processor arranged therein and configured to hold a fish for weighing. The system further includes a scale coupled to the housing, wherein the scale measures and generates a fish weight and communicates the fish weight to the processor, a global positioning system (GPS) arranged within the housing which obtains and reports a GPS position, and a display screen coupled to the housing for displaying the GPS position and the fish weight. The system is further configured to indicate when measuring of the fish weight is complete and is capable of communicating such fish weight measurement to a storage device, wherein the processor is communicably coupled to the scale, the GPS, the display screen, the measurement completion indication, and the communication hardware.

Claims (35)

1 . A fish weighing system, comprising:

a housing having a processor arranged therein and coupled to fish holding means for holding said fish for weighing;

a scale coupled to said housing and coupled to said fish holding means, wherein said scale measures and generates a fish weight and communicates said fish weight to said processor;

a global positioning system (GPS) arranged within said housing which obtains and reports a GPS position;

a display screen coupled to said housing for displaying said GPS position and said fish weight;

measurement completion indication means for indicating when measuring of said fish weight is complete; and

communication means for transmitting said fish weight to a storage device,

wherein said processor is communicably coupled to said scale, said GPS, said display screen, said measurement completion indication means, and said communication means.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein said fish holding means comprises a lip grip for being coupled to a lip of said fish.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein said measurement completion indication means comprises said display screen.

4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein said measurement completion indication means comprises an LED coupled to said housing and communicably coupled to said processor.

5 . The system of claim 4 , wherein said LED is yellow if weighing is in progress, and green if weighing is complete.

6 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising a speaker arranged within said housing and communicably coupled to said processor, wherein said speaker is employed for one or more of indicating if measuring said fish weight is complete and indicating said progress of said weighing.

7 . The system of claim 1 , wherein said storage device comprises database means communicably coupled to said fish weighing system via said communication means and configured for receiving, storing, and reporting data comprising said fish weight and position, wherein said fish weight and position are associated with said fish and stored in said database means.

8 . The system of claim 7 , wherein said fish weighing system is communicably coupled to said database means via an application running on a wireless device.

9 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising a rechargeable battery electrically coupled to said processor, GPS, display screen, measurement completion indication means, and communication means.

10 . The system of claim 9 , wherein said housing further comprises charging means for charging said rechargeable battery.

11 . The system of claim 1 , wherein said fish weighing system is communicably coupled to an automated cull system which indicates to said user which fish to cull based at least in part on said measured fish weight.

12 . A method for weighing a fish, comprising:

weighing a fish to obtain a measured fish weight with a fish weighing system comprising:

a housing having a processor arranged therein, said housing coupled to fish holding means for holding said fish for weighing;

a scale coupled to said housing and coupled to said fish holding means, wherein said scale measures and generates a fish weight and communicates said fish weight to said processor;

obtaining and reporting a GPS position via a global positioning system (GPS) arranged within said housing;

displaying said GPS position and said measured fish weight via a display screen coupled to said housing;

indicating if measuring said fish weight is complete via measurement completion indication means; and

transmitting said fish weight to a storage device via communication means,

wherein said processor is communicably coupled to said scale, said GPS, said display screen, said measurement completion indication means, and said communication means.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein said fish holding means comprises a lip grip for being coupled to a lip of said fish.

14 . The method of claim 12 , wherein said measurement completion indication means comprises said display screen.

15 . The method of claim 12 , wherein said measurement completion indication means is an LED coupled to said housing and communicably coupled to said processor.

16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein said LED is yellow if weighing is in progress, and green if weighing is complete.

17 . The method of claim 12 , wherein at least one of indicating if obtaining said measured fish weight is complete and indicating said progress of said weighing is performed via an audible indication from a speaker arranged within said housing and communicably coupled to said processor.

18 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising associating said fish weight and said position with said fish, and storing said measured weight and position in said storage device, wherein said storage device comprises database means configured for receiving, storing, and reporting data comprising said measured weight and position.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein said fish weighing system is communicably coupled to said database means via an application running on a wireless device.

20 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising automatically turning off said fish weighing system after a predetermined period of time after use.
