Abstract

A capacitive coupling system includes a plurality of conductive pads situated on a dielectric layer. A plurality of switches are connected between pairs of the conductive pads via conductive linkages. The switches are operable to selectively connect selected pairs of the conductive pads to selectively adjust capacitances between conductor pairs of an electrical connector.

3. The electrical connector system of claim 1 , wherein the switches are operable in response to a capacitance measurement between preselected conductor pairs.

4. The electrical connector system of claim 1 , further comprising a controller configured to selectively operate the switches to add a predetermined incremental capacitance between the first and second conductive traces.

5. The electrical connector system of claim 4 , wherein the total capacitance added is determined according to

nC/ 2

where C is the capacitance of each capacitor formed by the first and second conductive pads and the corresponding first and second conductive trace, and n is the total number of switches that have been operated to connect the corresponding first and second conductive pads.

6. A method adjusting capacitive coupling between conductors of an electrical connector, comprising:

providing a first conductor and a second conductor spaced apart from one another, the first and second conductors forming a conductor pair;

providing a plurality of first conductive pads adjacent the first conductor and a plurality of second conductive pads adjacent the second conductor, the first and second conductive pads being galvanically isolated from the respective first and second conductors to form a plurality of first and second capacitors arranged in pairs;

measuring capacitance between the first and second conductors;

determining whether the measured capacitance between the first and second conductors is balanced;

if the measured capacitance between the first and second conductors is not balanced, then closing a switch a connected between the first and second conductive pads of a selected pair of the first and second capacitors to add incremental capacitance between the first and second conductors.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising calculating the incremental capacitance.

8. The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

if the measured capacitance between the first and second conductors is balanced, then fusing the closed switch in a permanent ON state.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

after fusing the switch, measuring capacitance between the first and second conductors.

10. The method of claim 6 , further comprising situating a capacitive coupling system adjacent the first and second conductors of the electrical connector, including:

an input/output layer situated over the logic controller layer.

12. A method adjusting capacitive coupling between conductors of an electrical connector, comprising:

providing a first conductor and a second conductor spaced apart from one another, the first and second conductors forming a conductor pair;

providing a plurality of first conductive pads adjacent the first conductor and a plurality of second conductive pads adjacent the second conductor, the first and second conductive pads being galvanically isolated from the respective first and second conductors to form a plurality of first and second capacitors arranged in pairs;

situating a first side of a dielectric layer of a capacitive coupling system adjacent the first and second condors;

situating a plurality of switches on a second side of the dielectric layer;

providing conductive links between a switch layer including the plurality of switches situated over the metal layer;

measuring capacitance between the first and second conductors;

determining whether the measured capacitance between the first and second conductors is balanced;
