Abstract

Embodiments of systems and methods for the sending, delivery and receiving of faxes are disclosed herein. In particular, certain embodiments include a fax connector that may be deployed at a user's site, and a faxing system that may be deployed remotely from the user's site. The fax connector can be accessed at the user's site over a computer based network in order to perform functions associated with faxing, including sending, receiving and obtaining status on faxes. The fax connector deployed at the user's site communicates with the remotely deployed faxing system to send, receive, obtain status on, or perform other functions associated with, faxing.

Claims (58)

1. A method for faxing, comprising:

receiving over a computer based network, at a set of services deployed at a location remote from a user's site, a document and a destination telephone number associated with a fax from a first fax connector at the user's site;

determining if there is a fax connector identifier associated with the destination telephone number by accessing a mapping of telephone numbers to fax connector identifiers to determine if there is a fax connector identifier associated with the destination phone number, and

if there is a fax connector identifier associated with the destination telephone number:

storing the document in an entry in a storage in association with the fax connector identifier before it is sent to a second fax connector, and

sending the document to the second fax connector associated with the fax connector identifier over the computer based network; and

if there is not a fax connector identifier associated with the destination telephone number:

sending the document from the location remote from the user's site to the destination telephone number over a publicly switched telephone network (PSTN) via the set of services.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the set of services is deployed on a cloud based computing platform.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein a second user associated with the second fax connector has registered the second fax connector with the set of services and the fax identifier is associated with the fax connector based on the registration.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first fax connector and the second fax connector are different.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a request to determine if there are any received faxes to send at the set of services, wherein the request was sent from the second fax connector over the computer based network, wherein the determination of the fax connector identifier and sending of the document is done in response to the request from the second fax connector to determine if there are any received faxes.

6. A system for faxing, comprising:

a computing platform deployed remotely from a user's site, the computing platform including:

an interface with a publicly switched telephone network (PSTN)

an interface with a computer based network; and

a set of services executing on a processor of the computing platform, the set of services:

receiving, over the computer based network, a document and a destination telephone number associated with a fax from a first fax connector at the user's site;

determining if there is a fax connector identifier associated with the destination telephone number by accessing a mapping of telephone numbers to fax connector identifiers to determine if there is a fax connector identifier associated with the destination phone number;

if there is a fax connector identifier associated with the destination telephone number:

storing the document in an entry in a storage in association with the fax connector identifier before it is sent to a second fax connector, and

sending the document to a second fax connector associated with the fax connector identifier over the computer based network; and

if there is not a fax connector identifier associated with the destination telephone number:

sending the document from the location remote from the user's site to the destination telephone number over the publicly switched telephone network (PSTN) via the set of services.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the set of services is deployed on a cloud based computing platform.

8. The system of claim 6 , wherein a second user associated with the second fax connector has registered the second fax connector with the set of services and the fax identifier is associated with the fax connector based on the registration.

9. The system of claim 6 , wherein the first fax connector and the second fax connector are different.

10. The system of claim 6 , further comprising:

receiving a request to determine if there are any received faxes to send at the set of services, wherein the request was sent from the second fax connector over the computer based network, wherein the determination of the fax connector identifier and sending of the document is done in response to the request from the second fax connector to determine if there are any received faxes.

11. A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising instructions for:

receiving over a computer based network, at a set of services deployed at a location remote from a user's site, a document and a destination telephone number associated with a fax from a first fax connector at the user's site;

determining if there is fax connector identifier associated with the destination telephone number by accessing a mapping of telephone numbers to fax connector identifiers to determine if there is a fax connector identifier associated with the destination phone number;

if there is a fax connector identifier associated with the destination telephone number:

storing the document in an entry in a storage in association with the fax connector identifier before it is sent to a second fax connector, and

sending the document to the second fax connector associated with the fax connector identifier over the computer based network; and

if there is not a fax connector identifier associated with the destination telephone number:

sending the document from the location remote from the user's site to the destination telephone number over a publicly switched telephone network (PSTN) via the set of services.

12. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the set of services is deployed on a cloud based computing platform.

13. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein a second user associated with the second fax connector has registered the second fax connector with the set of services and the fax identifier is associated with the fax connector based on the registration.

14. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the first fax connector and the second fax connector are different.

15. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , further comprising instructions for:

receiving a request to determine if there are any received faxes to send at the set of services, wherein the request was sent from the second fax connector over the computer based network, wherein the determination of the fax connector identifier and sending of the document is done in response to the request from the second fax connector to determine if there are any received faxes.

16. A system for faxing, comprising:

a computing platform deployed remotely from a user's site, the computing platform including:

an interface with a publicly switched telephone network (PSTN)

an interface with a computer based network; and

a set of services executing on a processor of the computing platform, the set of services:

receiving, over the computer based network, a document and a destination telephone number associated with a fax from a first fax connector at the user's site;

determining if there is a fax connector identifier associated with the destination telephone number;

if there is a fax connector identifier associated with the destination telephone number:

sending the document to a second fax connector associated with the fax connector identifier over the computer based network; and

if there is not a fax connector identifier associated with the destination telephone number:

sending the document from the location remote from the user's site to the destination telephone number over the publicly switched telephone network (PSTN) via the set of services; and

receiving a request to determine if there are any received faxes to send from the second fax connector over the computer based network, wherein the determination of the fax connector identifier and sending of the document is done in response to the request from the second fax connector.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the set of services is deployed on a cloud based computing platform.

18. The system of claim 16 , wherein a second user associated with the second fax connector has registered the second fax connector with the set of services and the fax identifier is associated with the fax connector based on the registration.

19. The system of claim 16 , wherein the first fax connector and the second fax connector are different.
