Abstract

A PAP system is adapted for treatment of respiratory disease or sleep disordered breathing. The PAP system includes headgear, a patient interface and a flow generator. The flow generator includes a blower adapted to provide pressurized breathable gas to a patient through the patient interface. The blower is at least partially vibrationally isolated from the patient's head by at least one foam layer mounted within the flow generator to secure the blower. The at least one foam layer is adapted to reduce the amount of transmitted vibration received by the patient. The flow generator further includes a mounting structure limiting an extent of a compression of the at least one foam layer due to the weight of the blower. The mounting structure includes at least one protrusion extending from an interior surface of the flow generator toward the blower.

Claims (48)

1. A positive airway pressure (PAP) system adapted for treatment of respiratory disease or sleep disordered breathing comprising:

a headgear adapted for engaging a patient's head;

a patient interface adapted to be secured to and sealed against a portion of the patient's face, in use, by the headgear; and

a flow generator adapted to be connected to the patient interface, and wherein the flow generator is adapted to be secured by a portion of the headgear to the patient's head,

wherein the flow generator comprises a blower adapted to provide pressurised breathable gas to a patient through the patient interface and the blower is at least partially vibrationally isolated from the patient's head by at least one foam layer mounted within the flow generator to secure the blower, the at least one foam layer being adapted to reduce the amount of transmitted vibration received by the patient,

wherein the flow generator comprises a mounting structure limiting an extent of a compression of the at least one foam layer due to the weight of the blower, the mounting structure including at least one protrusion extending from an interior surface of the flow generator toward the blower, and

wherein the at least one protrusion is more rigid than the at least one foam layer.

2. The PAP system according to claim 1 , wherein the PAP system is portable.

3. The PAP system according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one foam layer has a spring constant sufficient to limit or reduce the vibration generated by vibration of the blower, in use.

4. The PAP system according to claim 3 , wherein the spring constant is within a range of about 400-1,800 N/m.

5. The PAP system according to claim 3 , wherein the spring constant is within a range of about 600-1,200 N/m.

6. The PAP system according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one foam layer has a maximum spring constant sufficient to limit or reduce the vibration generated by vibration of the blower caused by the weight of the blower, in use.

7. The PAP system according to claim 6 , wherein the maximum spring constant is about 9,800 N/m.

8. The PAP system according to claim 1 , wherein the headgear comprises a receiving portion adapted to mate with the flow generator and the receiving portion comprises at least one cushion.

9. The PAP system according to claim 8 , wherein the receiving portion comprises a cradle to receive the flow generator.

10. The PAP system according to claim 1 , further comprising at least one cushion adapted to be mounted between the patient's head and an underside of the flow generator.

11. The PAP system according to claim 10 , further comprising means for mounting the at least one cushion between the patient's head and the underside of the flow generator.

12. The PAP system according to claim 1 , further comprising hook and loop fasteners, wherein said hook and loop fasteners secure the flow generator to a portion of the headgear.

13. The PAP system according to claim 1 , further comprising means for securing the flow generator to a portion of the headgear.

14. The PAP system according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one foam layer encapsulates the blower within the flow generator.

15. The PAP system according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one protrusion extends upwardly from a lower surface of the flow generator towards the blower.

16. The PAP system according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one protrusion includes four protrusions.

17. The PAP system according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one protrusion is configured to limit or reduce vibration.

18. The PAP system according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one protrusion is adapted to receive the blower and mate with the external shape of the blower.

19. The PAP system according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one protrusion is flexible.

20. The PAP system according to claim 1 , wherein the interior surface from which the at least one protrusion extends is a lower interior surface, and wherein the at least one protrusion is shorter than the distance between the blower and the lower interior surface of the flow generator.

21. The PAP system according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one foam layer seals the interior of the flow generator.

22. The PAP system according to claim 1 , wherein the flow generator comprises an outlet and an inlet, and wherein the flow generator is sealed with elastomer except for the outlet and the inlet.

23. The PAP system according to claim 1 , wherein the headgear includes rigid portions adapted to prevent unintended movement of the flow generator.

24. The PAP system according to claim 1 , wherein the flow generator comprises a single stage axial blower and a controller.

25. The PAP system according to claim 1 , further comprising a layer of elastomer overmoulded to an interior wall of the flow generator.

26. The PAP system according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one protrusion and the at least one foam layer are made of different materials.

27. A positive airway pressure (PAP) system adapted for treatment of respiratory disease or sleep disordered breathing comprising:

a headgear adapted for engaging a patient's head;

a patient interface adapted to be secured to and sealed against a portion of the patient's face, in use, by the headgear; and

a flow generator adapted to be connected to the patient interface, and wherein the flow generator is adapted to be secured by a portion of the headgear to the patient's head,

wherein the flow generator comprises a blower adapted to provide pressurised breathable gas to a patient through the patient interface and the blower is at least partially vibrationally isolated from the patient's head by at least one dampening means adapted to reduce the amount of transmitted vibration received by the patient, the at least one dampening means comprising at least one foam layer mounted within the flow generator to secure the blower,

wherein the flow generator comprises a mounting structure limiting an extent of a compression of the at least one foam layer due to the weight of the blower, the mounting structure including at least one protrusion extending from an interior surface of the flow generator toward the blower, and

wherein the at least one protrusion is more rigid than the at least one foam layer.

28. A positive airway pressure (PAP) system adapted for treatment of respiratory disease or sleep disordered breathing comprising:

a headgear adapted for engaging a patient's head;

a patient interface adapted to be secured to and sealed against a portion of the patient's face, in use, by the headgear; and

a flow generator adapted to be connected to the patient interface, and wherein the flow generator is adapted to be secured by a portion of the headgear to the patient's head, the flow generator comprising:

a blower adapted to provide pressurised breathable gas to a patient through the patient interface;

compressible foam configured to a) support the blower and b) dampen and/or reduce vibration generated by the blower such that the blower is at least partially vibrationally isolated from the patient's head by the compressible foam; and

at least one protrusion extending from an interior surface of the flow generator toward the blower to support the blower, the at least one protrusion being positioned to limit an extent of compression of the compressible foam due to the weight of the blower, wherein the at least one protrusion is more rigid than the compressible foam.

29. The PAP system of claim 28 , wherein the at least one protrusion forms a cradle configured to receive the blower.

30. The PAP system of claim 29 , wherein a distance by which the at least one protrusion extends from the interior surface of the flow generator is less than a thickness of the compressible foam supporting the blower.
