Abstract

An electrosurgical apparatus is provided. The electrosurgical apparatus includes a cannula insertable into a patient and positionable adjacent abnormal tissue. The electrosurgical apparatus includes a microwave antenna that includes a distal end having a radiating section receivable within the cannula and positionable within a patient adjacent abnormal tissue. The microwave antenna is adapted to connect to a source of electrosurgical energy for transmitting electrosurgical energy to the radiating section. A portion of the radiating section substantially encompasses a portion of the abnormal tissue and may be configured to apply pressure thereto. The microwave antenna is actuated to electrocautery treat tissue to reduce blood flow to the abnormal tissue.

Claims (18)

1. A microwave ablation apparatus, comprising:

a cannula configured to be placed relative to tissue;

a microwave antenna movably disposed within the cannula and adapted to connect to a source of microwave energy; and

a radiating section disposed along a distal portion of the microwave antenna and configured to deploy from a distal end of the cannula and deliver microwave energy to tissue, the radiating section having a non-looped configuration and a looped configuration, the radiating section remaining in the non-looped configuration until microwave energy is delivered from the source of microwave energy to the radiating section, wherein delivery of microwave energy to the radiating section transitions the radiating section from the non-looped configuration to the looped configuration.

2. An electrosurgical apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the cannula includes a distal tip configured to penetrate tissue.

3. An electrosurgical apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the cannula or the microwave antenna is configured to communicate with an image guidance device selected from the group consisting of an ultrasound device, an x-ray device, a fluoroscopy device, a cat scan device, a computer tomography (CT) device, and a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) device.

4. An electrosurgical apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the radiating section is formed from a shape memory alloy.

5. An electrosurgical apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the radiating section is configured to wrap around the tissue upon transition of the radiating section to the looped configuration.

6. An electrosurgical apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the radiating section is configured to squeeze the tissue upon transition of the radiating section to the looped configuration.

7. An electrosurgical apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a connector operably coupled to a proximal portion of the cannula and configured to electrically couple at least one of the cannula or the microwave antenna to the source of microwave energy.

8. An electrosurgical apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the microwave antenna is coated with a dielectric material.

9. An electrosurgical apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the radiating section defines a loop diameter in a range of about 10 mm to about 20 mm when the radiating section is in the looped configuration.

10. An electrosurgical apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the radiating section includes a cross-section area having a shape selected from the group consisting of a circular shape, a flat shape, and an oval shape.

11. A microwave ablation apparatus, comprising:

a microwave antenna adapted to connect to a source of microwave energy and configured to be deployed from a cannula relative to tissue; and

a radiating section disposed along a distal portion of the microwave antenna and configured to deliver microwave energy to tissue, the radiating section having a first configuration and a second configuration different than the first configuration, the radiating section remaining in the first configuration until microwave energy is delivered from the source of microwave energy to the microwave antenna, wherein delivery of microwave energy to the microwave antenna transitions the radiating section from the first configuration to the second configuration such that the radiating section wraps around the tissue.

12. An electrosurgical apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein the radiating section is linear when in the first configuration.

13. An electrosurgical apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein the radiating section is looped when in the second configuration.
