Abstract

Biocompatible phase invertible proteinaceous compositions and methods for making and using the same are provided. The subject phase invertible compositions are prepared by combining a proteinaceous substrate and a crosslinking agent, such as a stabilized aldehyde crosslinking agent. Also provided are kits for use in preparing the subject compositions. The subject compositions, kits and systems find use in a variety of different applications.

Claims (37)

1. A method of delivering an amount of a composition to

a vascular site of a subject, comprising:

placing a delivery device at the vascular site; and

applying the composition to the vascular site through the delivery device,

wherein the composition comprises a proteinaceous substrate and a stabilized, heat treated dialdehyde, and

wherein the dialdehyde has been stabilized by heating it to a temperature ranging from 40 to 60° C. for a period of time ranging from 1 to 20 days.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the heat treated dialdehyde is heat treated glutaraldehyde.

3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the composition comprises molecules described by the following formula:

wherein R 1 and R 2 are H or hydrocarbon moieties which are polymerization products produced by sequential aldol reaction and dehydration of one or more glutaraldehyde molecules.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the subject is a mammal.

5. The method according to claim 4 , wherein the mammal is a human.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the subject is an ungulate.

7. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the ungulate is selected from the group consisting of cows, pigs, sheep and horses.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the amount ranges from 1 to 100 ml.

9. A method for producing a biocomposite structural member comprising:

placing a delivery device at a region of an arterial vessel of a human; and

applying an amount of a composition to the region through the delivery device,

wherein the composition comprises a proteinaceous substrate and a stabilized, heat treated dialdehyde, and

wherein the aldehyde has been stabilized by heating it to a temperature ranging from 40 to 60° C. for a period of time ranging from 1 to 20 days.

10. The method according to claim 9 , wherein the heat treated dialdehyde is heat treated glutaraldehyde.

11. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the composition comprises molecules described by the following formula:

wherein R 1 and R 2 are H or hydrocarbon moieties which are polymerization products produced by sequential aldol reaction and dehydration of one or more glutaraldehyde molecules.

12. The method according to claim 9 , wherein the amount ranges from 1 to 100 ml.

13. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the delivery device comprises a first occlusion member, a second occlusion member, and an expandable mandrel, wherein the expandable mandrel is positioned between the first and second occlusion members.

14. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the first and second occlusion members are deployable balloons.

15. The method according to claim 13 , wherein placing the delivery device comprises expanding the first and second occlusion members and the expandable mandrel at the vascular site.

16. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the expandable mandrel comprises one or more fluid delivery lumens comprising exit ports.

17. The method according to claim 16 , wherein applying the composition comprises delivering the composition through the one or more fluid delivery lumens, wherein the composition exits the device at the exit ports.

18. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the proteinaceous substrate and the stabilized, heat treated dialdehyde are delivered through separate fluid delivery lumens and are mixed at the vascular site after exiting the exit ports.

19. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the proteinaceous substrate and the stabilized, heat treated dialdehyde are mixed prior to exiting the exit ports.

20. The method according to claim 9 , wherein the delivery device comprises a first occlusion member, a second occlusion member, and an expandable mandrel, wherein the expandable mandrel is positioned between the first and second occlusion members.

21. The method according to claim 20 , wherein the first and second occlusion members are deployable balloons.

22. The method according to claim 20 , wherein placing the delivery device comprises expanding the first and second occlusion members and the expandable mandrel at the region of the arterial vessel.

23. The method according to claim 20 , wherein the expandable mandrel comprises one or more fluid delivery lumens comprising exit ports.

24. The method according to claim 23 , wherein applying the composition comprises delivering the composition through the one or more fluid delivery lumens, wherein the composition exits the device at the exit ports.

25. The method according to claim 24 , wherein the proteinaceous substrate and the stabilized, heat treated dialdehyde are delivered through separate fluid delivery lumens and are mixed at the region of the arterial vessel after exiting the exit ports.

26. The method according to claim 24 , wherein the proteinaceous substrate and the stabilized, heat treated dialdehyde are mixed prior to exiting the exit ports.
