Abstract

An intrauterine device includes a central support member, first and second internal flexures and first and second external flexures. The first and second internal flexures each include a first section having a first stiffness, a second section having a second stiffness, and third section having a third stiffness, wherein the second stiffness is more flexible than the first and third stiffness and wherein the first section of each internal flexure is coupled to the central support member. The first and second external flexures are coupled to the central support member and coupled to the third sections of the first and second internal flexures, the first and second external flexures in combination with the first and second internal flexures being configured to extend from a collapsed position parallel to the central support member to a deployed position flexing away from the central support member.

Claims (12)

1. An intrauterine device, comprising:

a central support member;

first and second inner flexures, each having a proximal portion, a middle portion, and distal portion, and wherein the proximal portion of each inner flexure is coupled to the central support member;

an arm member, having a proximal portion and a distal portion, wherein the proximal portion of the arm member is coupled to the middle portion of the first inner flexure at a first location, and wherein the first inner flexure and the arm member extend distally from the first location and form an acute angle with each other; and

first and second outer flexures, each having a proximal end and a distal end, wherein the respective proximal ends of the first and second outer flexures are coupled to the central support member, and wherein the respective distal ends of the first and second outer flexures are coupled to the respective distal portions of the respective first and second inner flexures,

wherein the first and second outer flexures, in combination with the arm member and in further combination with the first and second inner flexures comprise a delivery configuration for transcervical insertion, and a deployed configuration for deployment in a uterine cavity.

2. The intrauterine device of claim 1 , wherein the arm member comprises an arcuate configuration in the deployed configuration.

3. The intrauterine device of claim 1 , further comprising a second arm member, the second arm member having a proximal portion and a distal portion, and wherein the proximal portion of the second arm member is coupled to the middle portion of the second inner flexure at a second location, and wherein the second inner flexure and the second arm member distally from the second location and form an acute angle with each other.

4. The intrauterine device of claim 3 , wherein the arm member and second arm member comprise respective concave inner surfaces facing each other, and respective convex outer surfaces facing the respective first and second inner flexures, in the deployed configuration.

5. The intrauterine device of claim 3 , wherein the arm member and second arm member are configured to support a mesh array.

6. The intrauterine device of claim 5 , wherein the arm member and second arm member are coupled to the mesh array and, when in the deployed configuration, the respective distal portions of the arm member and second arm member are configured to assist the mesh array to contact a fundal wall of a uterus.

7. The intrauterine device of claim 1 , wherein the combined flexures and arm member are parallel and adjacently disposed to the central support member in the delivery configuration, and the combined flexures and arm member flex away from the central support member in the deployment.
