Abstract

In some aspects, consumables for a material processing head can include a body that is substantially axially symmetric about a central longitudinal axis; and a ring-shaped data tag attached to the body, the data tag having a central axis that is substantially coaxial to the central longitudinal axis of the body, the data tag having a conductive coil formed around the central axis of the data tag.

Claims (53)

1. A consumable for a material processing head for orienting and positioning a ring-shaped radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag within a material processing head, the consumable comprising:

a body that is substantially axially symmetric about a central longitudinal axis; and

the ring-shaped RFID tag attached to the body, the RFID tag having a central axis that is substantially coaxial to the central longitudinal axis of the body, the RFID tag comprising a conductive coil formed around the central axis of the RFID tag and disposed at least partially about the central longitudinal axis of the body,

wherein the conductive coil aligns with an antenna of an RFID reader located inside of the material processing head to receive an induce tag current from the RFID reader, thereby reducing communication interference between the RFID tag and the RFID reader inside of the material processing head.

2. The consumable of claim 1 wherein at least one of the conductive coil or the ring-shaped data tag is symmetric about the central longitudinal axis.

3. The consumable of claim 1 further comprising a chip containing data.

4. The consumable of claim 3 wherein the chip has at least 256 bits of data storage space.

5. The consumable of claim 1 wherein the conductive coil comprises two or more conductor turns about the central longitudinal axis.

6. The consumable of claim 1 wherein the conductive coil comprises a conductive material.

7. The consumable of claim 6 wherein the conductive coil comprises a printed circuit.

8. The consumable of claim 1 wherein the conductive coil is formed substantially symmetrical around the central axis.

9. The consumable of claim 1 wherein the conductive coil encircles the central axis.

10. The consumable of claim 1 wherein the consumable comprises a consumable cartridge comprising two or more component bodies.

11. The consumable of claim 10 wherein the two or more component bodies comprise at least a nozzle and an electrode.

12. The consumable of claim 1 , wherein the induced tag current circulates through the conductive coil of the RFID tag about the central longitudinal axis of the body, the circulating tag current adapted to reduce communication interference between the RFID tag and an RFID reader inside of the material processing head.

13. A replaceable consumable component for a material processing head of a material processing torch for orienting and positioning a ring-shaped RFID tag within the material processing head, the replaceable consumable component comprising:

a body defining a longitudinal axis and comprising a transmission region that conveys at least one of: a current, liquid, coolant, gas, light beam, or cutting medium through the body; and

the ring-shaped RFID tag defining a central opening, the tag being coupled to the body and coaxially disposed relative to the longitudinal axis of the body such that the at least one of: the current, liquid, coolant, gas, light beam, or cutting medium conveyed by the transmission passes through the central opening of the RFID tag,

wherein a tag current circulates through the conductive coil of the RFID tag about the longitudinal axis of the body, the tag current generated by a reader antenna when communicating with the RFID tag within the material processing torch.

14. The replaceable consumable component of claim 13 wherein the RFID tag is disposed perpendicularly to a central axis of the consumable.

15. The replaceable consumable component of claim 13 wherein the RFID tag comprises a chip having memory.

16. The replaceable consumable component of claim 15 wherein the chip contains data.

17. The replaceable consumable component of claim 15 wherein the chip has at least 256 bits of storage space.

18. The replaceable consumable component of claim 13 wherein the RFID tag comprises a conductive coil formed around the central opening.

19. The replaceable consumable component of claim 18 wherein the conductive coil has a single turn of a conductive material.

20. The replaceable consumable component of claim 18 wherein the conductive coil comprises multiple turns of a conductive material.

21. The replaceable consumable component of claim 18 wherein the conductive coil is a printed circuit.

22. The replaceable consumable component of claim 18 wherein the conductive coil is disposed perpendicularly to the transmission region.

23. The replaceable consumable component of claim 18 wherein the conductive coil is formed substantially symmetrical around the central axis.

24. The replaceable consumable component of claim 13 wherein a housing of the RFID tag is rotationally asymmetrically shaped.

25. A method for reducing communication interference of an RFID communication system in a material processing torch having a consumable component disposed therein by providing for consistent orienting and positioning a ring-shaped RFID tag within the torch, the torch conducting an operating current along a central axis thereof, the method comprising:

providing the ring-shaped RFID tag, coaxially disposed relative to the consumable component, the tag defining an open central portion and has a conductive coil disposed substantially around the open central portion;

positioning the consumable component within the torch such that the central axis of the consumable component is coaxial with the open central portion of the RFID tag;

passing a current along a portion of the central axis of the torch that extends through the ring-shaped RFID tag; and

generating, by a reader antenna coil within the torch, a tag current through the conductive coil, the tag current encircling a portion of the central axis of the torch.

26. The method of claim 25 further comprising providing an antenna in the torch for inducing a current in the RFID tag.

27. The method of claim 25 wherein the generating the tag current comprises generating current along a substantially circular path.

28. The method of claim 27 wherein the substantially circular path is formed substantially symmetrically about the central axis.

29. The method of claim 25 further comprising communicating with the RFID tag.

30. The method of claim 29 wherein the communicating with the RFID tag comprises reading and writing information to the RFID tag.

31. The method of claim 25 further comprising inserting a second RFID tag having a second conductive coil within the torch, wherein the second conductive coil is substantially parallel to the conductive coil of the first tag.

32. The method of claim 25 wherein the reader antenna within the torch comprises a coil coaxially aligned with the central axis of the torch.

33. A consumable for orienting and positioning a ring-shaped RFID tag within a material processing head, the consumable comprising:

a body; and

a ring-shaped RFID tag coupled to the body, the RFID tag defining a central axis and comprising:

a coiled antenna encircling the central axis of the RFID tag for transmitting data from the RFID tag to an RFID reader, wherein the coiled antenna is adapted to generate a tag current encircling a central axis of the body that is oriented to reduce communication interference between the RFID tag and the RFID reader; and

a chip in communication with the coil antenna.

34. The consumable of claim 33 wherein a storage capacity of the chip is greater than 60 bits of data.

35. The consumable of claim 33 wherein data stored on the chip is divided into two or more segments.

36. The consumable of claim 35 wherein a first segment of the data is locked and a second segment of the data is unlocked.

37. The consumable of claim 35 where the two or more segments can be locked independently of one another.

38. The consumable of claim 35 wherein the two or more segments can be locked at different times.

39. The consumable of claim 35 wherein a first segment of the data comprises consumable identification data and a second segment of the data comprises data pertaining to the operation of the consumable.
