Abstract

Disclosed is system comprising: a server platform operative to communicate with a wireless communication network; and data storage coupled to the server platform to store a plurality of business rules, wherein the server platform is operative to: generate a first provision instruction to provision a Policy and Charging Rules Function (PCRF) with a first rule set associated with a first set of business rules for wireless usage incurred by a mobile terminal operating in the wireless communication network; generate a first billing instruction based on the first set of business rules and a first data type determined by a packet gateway that inspects packet data communicated to or from the mobile terminal.

Claims (21)

1. A server platform operative to communicate with a wireless communication network, the server platform comprising:

a data storage coupled to the server platform to store a plurality of data transaction records, each data transaction record having a value indicative of a wireless device's data usage of a communication resource via an application, wherein the server platform comprises a processor and a memory coupled with the processor, wherein the memory is configured to provide the processor with instructions which when executed cause the processor to:

determine an allocated cost for at least a first and a second data transaction record by comparing a cost record indicative of a cost associated with the communication resource applicable to each of the first and second data transaction records to determine if at least a portion of the cost associated with the communication resource is attributed to the wireless device based on the value associated respectively with the first and second data transaction records; and

generate a cost report based on the allocated cost associated with each data transaction record, the cost report allocating the allocated cost for the first and the second data transaction records to different accounts.

2. The server platform of claim 1 wherein determining an allocated cost comprises comparing each of the plurality of data transaction records to the cost record to determine an allocated cost attributed to the value of each data transaction record.

3. The server platform of claim 1 wherein the plurality of data transaction records are associated with an entity, and the processor associates the allocated cost with a group within the entity in order to charge the allocated cost to the group, wherein the group is associated with a plurality of wireless devices.

4. The s server platform of claim 3 wherein the processor queries a cost table based on a type of communication resource to retrieve the cost record from a second database, wherein the cost table includes data pertaining to at least one service agreement relating to the communication resource.

5. The server platform of claim 1 wherein each data transaction record is selected from the group consisting of: Internet, cellular data, SMS and combinations thereof.

6. The server platform of claim 1 wherein the cost record is indicative of the cost of the communication resource for a plurality of devices.

7. The server platform of claim 1 wherein the data transaction record includes a source address or a destination address and the processor queries a first database utilizing at least one of the source address and/or destination address to determine if an address stored in the data storage matches at least one of the source address and/or destination address.

8. The server platform of claim 7 wherein at least one of the source address and/or destination address is indicative of an e-mail address.

9. The server platform of claim 1 wherein the first and second data transaction records are further associated with a first user.

10. The server platform of claim 1 wherein at least one of the plurality of data transaction records is indicative of data use for business purposes and the cost report is generated to associate a business account identifier with the data use for business purposes.

11. The server platform of claim 10 wherein the business account identifier is associated with a client.

12. The server platform of claim 1 wherein the data transaction record is indicative of login credentials for a cloud computing resource.

13. The server platform of claim 1 wherein the wireless device is selected from the group consisting of: a smart phone, a tablet, a lap top computer, an OEM computer, a server, a wireless device that utilizes machine-to-machine (M2M) communication and combinations thereof.

14. The server platform of claim 1 wherein a total value of the plurality of data transaction records associated with the wireless device during a time period is compared to a maximum usage value of a service agreement to determine if the total value is greater than the maximum value to allocate portions of an overage charge to the different accounts associated with the plurality of data transaction records.

15. The server platform of claim 1 wherein the first and second data transaction records are allocated to different accounts based on first and second email addresses associated respectively with the first and second data transaction records.

16. The server platform of claim 1 wherein the first and second data transaction records are allocated to different accounts based on first and second IP addresses associated respectively with the first and second data transaction records.

17. The server platform of claim 1 wherein the first and second data transaction records are allocated to different accounts based on first and second times of day associated respectively with the first and second data transaction records.

18. The server platform of claim 1 wherein data transaction records may be indicative of usage of types of communications resources comprising data, SMS, MMS, telephone, mobile wireless phone, satellite phone, and other communication resources.
