Abstract

Systems and methods for pairing electronic devices are provided. In an example embodiment, gesture data resulting from a physical user gesture associated with a first device and a second device is received. Features are extracted from the gesture data. An association between the first device and the second device is identified based on the extracted features. A communicative coupling is initiated between the first device and the second device in response to identifying the association.

Claims (45)

1. A system comprising:

a processor, and a memory including instructions, which when executed by the processor, cause the system to:

receive gesture data resulting from a physical user gesture associated with a first device and a second device;

extract from the gesture data a first feature corresponding to the first device, the first feature comprising first and second straight-line distances between respective entry points and exit points of the physical user gesture on a touchscreen of the first device;

extract from the gesture data a second feature corresponding to the second device, the second feature comprising third and fourth straight-line distances between respective entry points and exit points of the physical user gesture on a touchscreen of the second device;

access physical device parameters for the first device and the second device, the physical device parameters respectively comprising a number of pixels along the first and second distances and a number of pixels along the third and fourth distances;

identify an association between the first device and the second device based on a comparison of the first feature and the second feature using the physical device parameters for the first device and the second device; and

in response to identifying the association between the first device and the second device, initiate a communicative coupling between the first device and the second device.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the comparison of the first feature and the second feature using the physical device parameters for the first device and the second device comprises a comparison between a first ratio of the number of pixels along the first and second distances to a second ratio of the number of pixels along the third and fourth distances.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the comparison uses additional features of the gesture data, wherein the additional features include at least one of a direction, angle, curvature, speed, or acceleration.

4. The system of claim wherein the physical device parameter further comprises a screen size.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further to:

access sensor data for the first device and the second device;

determine a likelihood of an association between particular devices of a plurality of candidate devices using the sensor data; and

identify the first device and the second device from among the plurality of candidate devices based on the determined likelihood.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the sensor data comprises geolocation data.

7. A method comprising:

receiving gesture data resulting from a physical user gesture associated with a first device and a second device;

extracting from the gesture data a first feature corresponding to the first device, the first feature comprising first and second straight-line distances between respective entry points and an exit points of the physical user gesture on a touchscreen of the first device;

extracting from the gesture data a second feature corresponding to the second device, the second feature comprising third and fourth straight-line distances between respective entry points and an exit points of the physical user gesture on a touchscreen of the second device;

accessing physical device parameters for the first device and the second device, the physical device parameters respectively comprising a number of pixels along the first and second distances and a number of pixels along the third and fourth distances;

identifying an association between the first device and the second device based on a comparison of the first feature and the second feature using the physical device parameters for the first device and the second device; and

in response to identifying the association between the first device and the second device, initiating a communicative coupling between the first device and the second device.

The method of claim 7 , wherein the comparison of the first feature and the second feature using the physical device parameters for the first device and the second device comprises a comparison between a first ratio of the number of pixels along the first and second distances to a second ratio of the number of pixels along the third and fourth distances.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the comparison uses additional features of the gesture data, wherein the additional features include at least one of a direction, angle, curvature, speed, or acceleration.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the physical device parameter further comprises a screen size.

11. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

accessing sensor data for the first device and the second device;

determining a likelihood of an association between particular devices of a plurality of candidate devices using the sensor data; and

identifying the first device and the second device from among the plurality of candidate devices based on the determined likelihood.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the sensor data comprises geolocation data.

13. A machine-readable medium having no transitory signals and storing instructions that, when executed by at least one processor of a machine, cause the machine to perform operations comprising:

receiving gesture data resulting from a physical user gesture associated with a first device and a second device;

extracting from the gesture data a first feature corresponding to the first device, the first feature comprising first and second straight-line distances between respective entry points and an exit points of the physical user gesture on a touchscreen of the first device;

extracting from the gesture data a second feature corresponding to the second device, the second feature comprising third and fourth straight-line distances between respective entry points and an exit points of the physical user gesture on a touchscreen of the second device;

accessing physical device parameters for the first device and the second device, the physical device parameters respectively comprising a number of pixels along the first and second distances and a number of pixels along the third and fourth distances;

identifying an association between the first device and the second device based on a comparison of the first feature and the second feature using the physical device parameters for the first device and the second device; and

in response to identifying the association between the first device and the second device, initiating a communicative coupling between the first device and the second device.

The machine-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the comparison of the first feature and the second feature using the physical device parameters for the first device and the second device comprises a comparison between a first ratio of the number of pixels along the first and second distances to a second ratio of the number of pixels along the third and fourth distances.

15. The machine-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the comparison uses additional features of the gesture data, wherein the additional features include at least one of a direction, angle, curvature, speed, or acceleration.

16. The machine-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the physical device parameter further comprises a screen size.

17. The machine-readable medium of claim 13 , further comprising:

accessing sensor data for the first device and the second device;

determining a likelihood of an association between particular devices of a plurality of candidate devices using the sensor data; and

identifying the first device and the second device from among the plurality of candidate devices based on the determined likelihood.
