Abstract

Rapid setting high strength calcium phosphate cements and methods of using the same are provided. Aspects of the cements include fine and coarse calcium phosphate particulate reactants and a cyclodextrin which, upon combination with a setting fluid, produce a flowable composition that rapidly sets into a high strength product. The flowable compositions find use in a variety of different applications, including the repair of hard tissue defects, e.g., bone defects such as fractures.

Claims (22)

1. A flowable composition that sets into a calcium phosphate containing product, wherein the flowable composition is produced by a method comprising:

combining:

(a) a dry reactant component comprising:

(i) a first particulate calcium phosphate reactant having a mean particle size of 8 μm or less,

(ii) a second calcium phosphate reactant having a tricalcium phosphate coarse particulate composition comprising tricalcium phosphate particles that range in size from 30 to 250 μm, wherein the tricalcium phosphate particles comprise sodium in an amount ranging from 1500 to 2500 ppm, and

(iii) cyclodextrin; and

(b) a setting fluid,

in a ratio sufficient to produce the flowable composition that sets into a calcium phosphate containing product.

2. The composition according to claim 1 , wherein the composition is a paste.

3. The composition according to claim 1 , wherein the composition is a clay.

4. The composition according to claim 1 , wherein the product has a 24-hour tensile strength of 5 MP or greater.

5. The composition according to claim 1 , wherein the composition has a 4-minute setting strength of 1000 N or greater.

6. The composition according to claim 1 , wherein the composition has a 6-minute setting strength of 1500 N or greater.

7. The composition according to claim 1 , wherein the cyclodextrin is cyclic oligosaccharide.

8. The composition according to claim 1 , wherein the cyclodextrin is a mixture of cyclic oligosaccharides comprising at least five α-D-glucopyranoside units that exhibit a 1>4 linkage.

9. The composition according to claim 1 , wherein the amount of cyclodextrin that is present in the dry reactant component ranges from 0.01 to 10% by weight.

10. The composition according to claim 1 , wherein the amount of cyclodextrin that is present in the dry reactant component ranges from 0.05 to 2.0% by weight.

11. The composition according to claim 1 , wherein the setting fluid comprises cyclodextrin.

12. The composition according to claim 11 , wherein the cyclodextrin of the setting fluid is cyclic oligosaccharide.

13. The composition according to claim 11 , wherein the cyclodextrin of the setting fluid is a mixture of cyclic oligosaccharides comprising at least five α-D-glucopyranoside units that exhibit a 1>4 linkage.

14. The composition according to claim 11 , wherein the amount of cyclodextrin of the setting fluid ranges from 0.01 to 10% by weight.

15. The composition according to claim 11 , wherein the amount of cyclodextrin of the setting fluid ranges from 0.05 to 2.0% by weight.
