Abstract

A method and device for attaching messages stored at the device as attachments to a message being composed at the device. The device comprises: a memory storing a messaging application, a communication interface, a display device, and a processor configured to execute the messaging application to: render, at the display device, the message; in response to detecting selection of an attach icon in the message, render, at the display device, message icons, each message icon associated with a respective one of the stored messages; detect selection of at least one message icon; for each selected message icon, convert a stored message associated with the selected message icon into a Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension (MIME) attachment message; encode the message and each MIME attachment message into a MIME message; and, in response to detecting selection of a send icon of the message, transmit, via the communication interface, the MIME message.

Claims (52)

1. A device comprising:

a communication interface configured to communicate with a server to receive messages from the server, wherein each of the messages received from the server comprises one or more pieces of a corresponding message stored at the server;

a memory storing a messaging application and the messages received from the server;

a display device; and

a processor configured to execute the messaging application to:

render, at the display device, a composed message comprising an attach icon for attaching the messages stored at the memory to the composed message and a send icon for sending the composed message;

in response to detecting selection of the attach icon, render, at the display device, one or more message icons, each of the one or more message icons associated with a respective one of the messages stored at the memory, wherein a type of the stored messages with which the one or more message icons are associated comprises one or more of email messages, short message service “SMS” messages, multimedia messaging service “MMS” messages, and calendar invitations;

detect selection of at least one of the one or more message icons;

for each message icon that is selected:

(I) retrieve, from the memory of the device, one of the stored messages associated with the message icon that is selected;

(II) convert the stored message into a Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension (MIME) attachment message; and

(III) attach the MIME attachment message to the composed message;

encode the composed message and each MIME attachment message generated at step (II) attached to the composed message into a MIME message; and,

in response to detecting selection of the send icon, transmit, using the communication interface, the MIME message.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the stored message associated with the message icon that is selected includes at least one of a message header of the corresponding message, a message body of the corresponding message, an indication of at least one image associated with the corresponding message, one or more images of the corresponding message, or an indication of at least one attachment associated with the corresponding message.

3. The device of claim 2 , wherein the processor is further configured to convert the stored message associated with the message icon that is selected into the MIME attachment message based on the at least one of the message header of the corresponding message, the message body of the corresponding message, the indication of at least one image associated with the corresponding message, or the indication of at least one attachment associated with the corresponding message.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein, for one of the message icons that is selected, the stored message includes a message header of the corresponding message stored at the server and a message body of the corresponding message stored at the server; and wherein the processor is further configured to convert the stored message associated with the message icon that is selected into the MIME attachment message by converting each of the message header and the message body into MIME.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the message stored in the memory is an email message.

6. A method comprising:

at a mobile device comprising a processor, a memory, a communication interface, and a display device,

receiving, at the communication interface, messages from a server, wherein each of the messages received from the server comprises one or more pieces of a corresponding message stored at the server;

storing the messages received from the server in the memory;

rendering, at the display device a composed message comprising an attach icon for attaching the messages stored at the memory and a send icon for sending the message;

in response to detecting, at the processor, selection of the attach icon, rendering, at the display device, one or more message icons, each of the one or more message icons associated with a respective one of the stored messages, wherein a type of the stored messages with which the one or more message icons are associated comprises one or more of email messages, short message service “SMS” messages, multimedia messaging service “MMS” messages, and calendar invitations;

detecting, at the processor, selection of at least one of the one or more message icons;

for each message icon that is selected:

(I) retrieving, from the memory of the mobile device, one of the stored messages associated with the message icon that is selected;

(II) converting, at the processor, the stored message into a Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension (MIME) attachment message; and

(III) attaching the MIME message to the composed message;

encoding, at the processor, the composed message and each MIME attachment message generated at step (II) attached to the composed message into a MIME message; and,

in response to detecting, at the processor, selection of the send icon, transmitting via the communication interface, the MIME message.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the stored message associated with the message icon that is selected includes at least one of a message header of the corresponding message, a message body of the corresponding message, an indication of at least one image associated with the corresponding message, or an indication of at least one attachment associated with the corresponding message.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein converting further comprises converting the stored message associated with the message icon that is selected into the MIME attachment message based on the at least one of the message header of the corresponding message stored, the message body of the corresponding message stored at the server, the indication of at least one image associated with the corresponding message, or the indication of at least one attachment associated with the corresponding message that is included in the stored message.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein, for one of the message icons that is selected, the stored message includes a message header of the corresponding message and a message body of the corresponding message; and wherein converting further comprises converting each of the message header and the message body into MIME.

10. The method of claim 6 , wherein the message stored in the memory is an email message.

11. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing a computer program, wherein execution of the computer to perform:

at a mobile device comprising a display device, a memory and a communication interface,

receiving, at the communication interface, messages from a server, wherein each of the messages received from the server comprises one or more pieces of a corresponding message stored at the server;

storing the messages received from the server in the memory;

rendering, at the display device, a composed message, the composed message comprising an attach icon for attaching the messages stored at the memory and a send icon for sending the message;

in response to detecting, at a processor, selection of the attach icon, rendering, at the display device, one or more message icons, each of the one or more message icons associated with a respective one of the stored messages, wherein a type of the stored messages with which the one or more message icons are associated comprises one or more of email messages, short message service “SMS” messages, multimedia messaging service “MMS” messages, and calendar invitations;

detecting, at the processor, selection of at least one of the one or more message icons;

for each message icon that is selected:

(I) retrieving, from the memory of the device, one of the stored messages associated with the message icon that is selected;

(II) converting, at the processor, the stored message into a Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension (MIME) attachment message; and

(III) attaching the MIME message to the composed message;

encoding, at the processor, the composed message and each MIME attachment message generated at step (II) attached to the composed message into a MIME message; and,

in response to detecting, at the processor, selection of the send icon, transmitting, via the communication interface, the MIME message.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the stored message associated with the message icon that is selected includes at least one of a message header of the corresponding message, a message body of the corresponding message, an indication of at least one image associated with the corresponding message, one or more images of the corresponding message, or an indication of at least one attachment associated with the corresponding message.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein converting further comprises converting the stored message associated with the message icon that is selected into the MIME attachment message based on the at least one of the message header of the corresponding message stored, the message body of the corresponding message stored at the server, the indication of at least one image associated with the corresponding message, or the indication of at least one attachment associated with the corresponding message that is included in the stored message.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein for one of the message icons that is selected, the stored message includes a message header of the corresponding message stored at the server and a message body of the corresponding message stored at the server; and wherein the processor is further configured to convert the stored message associated with the message icon that is selected into the MIME attachment message by converting each of the message header and the message body into MIME.
