Abstract

High-precision local search is performed on the Internet. A map image-rendering software provider embeds spatial keys into maps, which are then provided to producers of Internet content such as map providers. For example, a homeowner may post a message on a web bulletin board advertising his house for sale, and including a map showing the location of the house. When a search engine's web crawler encounters a page having a spatial key embedded in an image, the spatial key is indexed with the other content on the page. Because the spatial key identifies a small geographic area, indexing the content with the spatial key allows search queries to be limited by area and still provide useful results. Thus, a user of a search engine searching for “house for sale” in a specific area will be directed to web pages that meet the geographic and content search terms.

Claims (46)

1. A method for associating geographic information with textual information, the method comprising:

receiving, from a first computer, a request for a digital map of a specified geographic region;

identifying a spatial key associated with the geographic region;

encrypting the identified spatial key;

embedding the encrypted spatial key into the requested digital map;

returning, to the first computer, the requested digital map including the embedded encrypted spatial key;

receiving, from a second computer, a request to decrypt the encrypted spatial key, the encrypted spatial key extracted by the second computer from the digital map;

decrypting the spatial key; and

returning, to the second computer, the decrypted spatial key.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising embedding a bounding box in the digital map.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the returned digital map is a bitmap image and the spatial key and bounding box are encoded in red, green and blue values of the bitmap image.

4. The method of claim 2 wherein the returned digital map is a vector graphic and the spatial key and bounding box are encoded in a comment associated with the digital map.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising embedding a steganographically encoded digital signature in the digital map.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the spatial key is encrypted prior to embedding the key in the digital map.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second computer comprises a search engine, wherein the search engine indexes the spatial key with content associated with the digital map, and wherein the search engine performs location based searches using the spatial key.

8. A computer program product for associating geographic information with textual information, the computer program product stored on a non-transitory computer-readable medium and including instructions configured to cause a processor to carry out the steps of:

receiving, from a first computer, a request for a digital map of a specified geographic region;

identifying a spatial key associated with the geographic region;

encrypting the identified spatial key;

embedding the encrypted spatial key into the requested digital map;

returning, to the first computer, the requested digital map including the encrypted spatial key;

receiving, from a second computer, a request to decrypt the encrypted spatial key, the encrypted spatial key extracted by the second computer from the digital map;

decrypting the spatial key; and

returning, to the second computer, the decrypted spatial key.

9. The computer program product of claim 8 further comprising instructions for embedding a bounding box in the digital map.

10. The computer program product of claim 9 wherein the returned digital map is a bitmap image and the spatial key and bounding box are encoded in red, green and blue values of the bitmap image.

11. The computer program product of claim 9 wherein the returned digital map is a vector graphic and the spatial key and bounding box are encoded in a comment associated with the digital map.

12. The computer program product of claim 8 further comprising instructions for embedding a steganographically encoded digital signature in the digital map.

13. The computer program product of claim 8 wherein the spatial key is encrypted prior to embedding the key in the digital map.

14. The computer program product of claim 8 , wherein the second computer comprises a search engine, wherein the search engine indexes the spatial key with content associated with the digital map, and wherein the search engine performs location based searches using the spatial key.

15. A system for associating geographic information with textual information, comprising:

a processor, and

a non-transitory computer-readable medium including instructions configured to cause the processor to carry out the steps of:

receiving, from a first computer, a request for a digital map of a specified geographic region;

identifying a spatial key associated with the geographic region;

encrypting the identified spatial key;

embedding the encrypted spatial key into the requested digital map;

returning, to the first computer, the requested digital map including the encrypted spatial key;

receiving, from a second computer, a request to decrypt the encrypted spatial key, the encrypted spatial key extracted by the second computer from the digital map;

decrypting the spatial key; and

returning, to the second computer, the decrypted spatial key.

16. The system of claim 15 wherein the returned digital map is a bitmap image and the spatial key and bounding box are encoded in red, green and blue values of the bitmap image.

17. The system of claim 15 wherein the returned digital map is a vector graphic and the spatial key and bounding box are encoded in a comment associated with the digital map.

18. The system of claim 15 wherein the instructions are configured to further cause the processor to embed a steganographically encoded digital signature in the digital map.

19. The system of claim 15 wherein the instructions are configured to further cause the processor to encrypt the spatial key prior to embedding the key in the digital map.

20. The system of claim 15 , wherein the second computer comprises a search engine, wherein the search engine indexes the spatial key with content associated with the digital map, and wherein the search engine performs location based searches using the spatial key.
