Abstract

Methods and devices for selectively presenting a user interface or “desktop” across two devices are provided. More particularly, a unified desktop is presented across a device and a computer system. The unified desktop acts as a single user interface that presents data and receives user interaction in a seamless environment. The unified desktop can present notifications for both the computer system and the device in the unified desktop. Thus, regardless of the origin of the notification, the notification may be presented on the unified desktop on the device user interface and/or the computer system user interface.

Claims (55)

1 - 20 . (canceled)

21 . A method, comprising:

connecting a device to a computer system to form a unified system;

generating a unified desktop for the unified system, wherein the unified desktop includes a first user interface associated with the device and a second user interface associated with the computer system, and wherein the unified desktop implements a desktop metaphor as a cohesive user interface across both the first user interface and the second user interface;

determining one or more status indicators to display in the unified desktop;

providing a bar in the unified desktop, wherein the bar is displayed in the first user interface or the second user interface; and

providing at least a first status indicator and a second status indicator in the bar of the unified desktop, wherein the first and second status indicators are in physical proximity, wherein a first status indicator provides information associated with the device, and wherein a second status indicator provides information associated with the computer system.

22 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the first status indicator or the second status indicator is an icon.

23 . The method of claim 22 , wherein or the first status indicator or the second status indicator is selectable.

24 . The method of claim 23 , wherein a second portion displayed in one of the first user interface or the second user interface also provides two or more status indicators, wherein the second portion is displayed on a different user interface from the first portion, and wherein the second portion displays at least one different status indicator from the first portion.

25 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the first status indicator includes one of a wireless fidelity indicator, a Bluetooth indicator, a network traffic indicator, a signal strength indicator, a battery indicator, a Global Positioning System (GPS) indicator, a synchronization indicator, an alarm, a no Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) warning, a speakerphone indicator, a roaming warning, or a TTY indicator.

26 . The method of claim 25 , wherein the second status indicator includes one of a volume indicator, a monitor indicator, a keyboard indicator, a time, a date, or a power indicator.

27 . The method of claim 23 , further comprising:

receiving a selection of one of the one or more status indicators; and

providing information associated with the status indicator.

28 . The method of claim 27 , further comprising providing a user interface device that may be selected by a user.

29 . The method of claim 28 , further comprising:

receiving a selection of the user interface device; and

in response to receiving the selection of the user interface device, providing a menu associated with the status indicator, wherein the user modifies a function of the device or the computer system by interaction with the menu.

30 . The method of claim 29 , wherein the bar is a horizontal bar positioned at a top of the unified desktop.

31 . A unified system, comprising:

a computer system comprising:

a first screen;

a processor;

a memory

a device comprising:

a second screen;

a second memory;

a second processor;

wherein when the computer system and the device are connected to form the unified system, the device is operable to:

provide a unified desktop over both the first screen and the second screen, wherein the unified desktop implements a desktop metaphor as a cohesive user interface across both the first screen and the second screen; and

providing bar in the unified desktop, wherein the bar is displayed in one of the first screen or the second screen,

providing at least a first status indicator and a second status indicator in the bar of the unified desktop, wherein the first and second status indicators are in physical proximity, wherein a first status indicator in the portion provides information associated with the device, and wherein a second status indicator provides information associated with the computer system.

32 . The device of claim 31 , wherein the first status indicator or the second status indicator is an icon.

33 . The device of claim 32 , wherein the first status indicator includes one of a wireless fidelity indicator, a Bluetooth indicator, a network traffic indicator, a signal strength indicator, a battery indicator, a Global Positioning System (GPS) indicator, a synchronization indicator, an alarm, a no Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) warning, a speakerphone indicator, a roaming warning, or a TTY indicator.

34 . The device of claim 33 , wherein the second indicator includes one of a volume indicator, a monitor indicator, a keyboard indicator, a time, a date, or a power indicator.

35 . The device of claim 34 , wherein the device is further operable to:

receive a selection of one of the first or second status indicators;

in response to receiving the selection of the status indicator, provide a user interface device that may be selected by a user;

receive a selection of the user interface device; and

in response to receiving the selection of the user interface device, providing a menu associated with the status indicator, wherein the user modifies a function of the device or the computer system by interaction with the menu.

36 . A computer readable medium having stored thereon computer-executable instructions, the computer executable instructions causing a processor to execute a method for providing a unified desktop, the computer-executable instructions comprising:

instructions to connect a device to a computer system to form a unified system;

instructions to generate the unified desktop for the unified system, wherein the unified desktop includes a first user screen associated with the device and a second user screen associated with the computer system, and wherein the unified desktop implements a desktop metaphor as a cohesive user interface across both the first user screen and the second user screen;

instructions to determine two or more status indicators to display in the unified desktop;

instructions to provide a bar in the unified desktop, wherein the bar is displayed in one of the first screen or the second screen;

providing at least a first status indicator and a second status indicator in the bar of the unified desktop, wherein the first and second status indicators are in physical proximity, wherein a first status indicator provides information associated with the device, and wherein a second status indicator provides information associated with the computer system

instructions to receive a selection of the first or second status indicator;

in response to receiving the first or second status indicator, instructions to provide a user interface device that may be selected by a user;

instructions to receive a selection of the user interface device; and

in response to receiving the selection of the user interface device, instructions to providing a menu associated with the first or second status indicator, wherein the user modifies a function of the device or the computer system by interaction with the menu.

37 . The computer readable medium of claim 36 , wherein the first status indicator or the second status indicator is an icon.

38 . The computer readable medium of claim 37 , wherein a second portion displayed in one of the first screen or the second screen also provides two or more status indicators, wherein the second portion is displayed on a different screen from the first portion, and wherein the second portion displays at least one different status indicator from the first portion.

39 . The computer readable medium of claim 38 , wherein the first status indicator includes one of a wireless fidelity indicator, a Bluetooth indicator, a network traffic indicator, a signal strength indicator, a battery indicator, a Global Positioning System (GPS) indicator, a synchronization indicator, an alarm, a no Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) warning, a speakerphone indicator, a roaming warning, or a TTY indicator.

40 . The computer readable medium of claim 39 , wherein the second indicator includes one of a volume indicator, a monitor indicator, a keyboard indicator, a time, a date, or a power indicator.
