Abstract

An electrophotographic image forming device according to one example embodiment includes a toner cartridge removably installable in the image forming device. The toner cartridge has a reservoir for storing toner and an outlet port in fluid communication with the reservoir for exiting toner from the toner cartridge. The toner cartridge has a shutter that is movable between a closed position blocking the outlet port and an open position unblocking the outlet port. A sensor is positioned to detect whether the shutter is in the closed position or the open position when the toner cartridge is installed in the image forming device.

Claims (46)

1. An electrophotographic image forming device, comprising:

a toner cartridge removably installable in the image forming device, the toner cartridge has a reservoir for storing toner and an outlet port in fluid communication with the reservoir for exiting toner from the toner cartridge, the toner cartridge has a shutter that is movable between a closed position blocking the outlet port and an open position unblocking the outlet port, the toner cartridge has a projection that is movable from a first position to a second position and that is operatively connected to the shutter such that the projection is in the first position when the shutter is in the closed position and the projection is in the second position when the shutter is in the open position; and

a sensor positioned to detect whether the projection is in the first position or the second position when the toner cartridge is installed in the image forming device,

wherein the sensor is an optical sensor, wherein when the toner cartridge is installed in the image forming device, the optical sensor is in one of a blocked state and an unblocked state when the projection is in the first position and the other of the blocked state and the unblocked state when the projection is in the second position,

wherein when the toner cartridge is installed in the image forming device and the optical sensor is in the blocked state, the position of the projection on the toner cartridge causes an intermediate member in the image forming device to physically block an optical path of the optical sensor.

2. The electrophotographic image forming device of claim 1 , further comprising:

an alignment guide on an exterior of the toner cartridge; and

a guide slot in the image forming device formed between a first guide and a second guide opposite the first guide, the guide slot is positioned to receive the alignment guide to guide the toner cartridge as the toner cartridge is installed in the image forming device,

wherein when the projection is in the second position, the projection extends from the guide slot through an opening in the first guide.

3. The electrophotographic image forming device of claim 1 , further comprising:

an alignment guide on an exterior of the toner cartridge; and

a guide slot in the image forming device formed between a first guide and a second guide opposite the first guide, the guide slot is positioned to receive the alignment guide to guide the toner cartridge as the toner cartridge is installed in the image forming device,

wherein the sensor is positioned along the first guide.

4. The electrophotographic image forming device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a linkage on the toner cartridge that is operatively connected to the shutter; and

an access door on the image forming device through which the toner cartridge is insertable into and removable from the image forming device,

wherein when the toner cartridge is installed in the image forming device, the linkage is positioned to receive a force upon the closing of the access door that causes the shutter to move from the closed position to the open position.

5. An electrophotographic image forming device, comprising:

a toner cartridge removably installable in the image forming device, the toner cartridge has a reservoir for storing toner and an outlet port in fluid communication with the reservoir for exiting toner from the toner cartridge, the toner cartridge has a shutter that is movable between a closed position blocking the outlet port and an open position unblocking the outlet port, the toner cartridge has a projection that is movable from a first position to a second position and that is operatively connected to the shutter such that the projection is in the first position when the shutter is in the closed position and the projection is in the second position when the shutter is in the open position; and

a sensor positioned to detect whether the projection is in the first position or the second position when the toner cartridge is installed in the image forming device,

wherein the sensor is an optical sensor, wherein when the toner cartridge is installed in the image forming device, the optical sensor is in one of a blocked state and an unblocked state when the projection is in the first position and the other of the blocked state and the unblocked state when the projection is in the second position,

wherein when the toner cartridge is installed in the image forming device and the optical sensor is in the blocked state, the projection on the toner cartridge physically blocks an optical path of the optical sensor.

6. The electrophotographic image forming device of claim 5 , further comprising:

an alignment guide on an exterior of the toner cartridge; and

a guide slot in the image forming device formed between a first guide and a second guide opposite the first guide, the guide slot is positioned to receive the alignment guide to guide the toner cartridge as the toner cartridge is installed in the image forming device,

wherein when the projection is in the second position, the projection extends from the guide slot through an opening in the first guide.

7. The electrophotographic image forming device of claim 5 , further comprising:

an alignment guide on an exterior of the toner cartridge; and

a guide slot in the image forming device formed between a first guide and a second guide opposite the first guide, the guide slot is positioned to receive the alignment guide to guide the toner cartridge as the toner cartridge is installed in the image forming device,

wherein the sensor is positioned along the first guide.

8. The electrophotographic image forming device of claim 5 , further comprising:

a linkage on the toner cartridge that is operatively connected to the shutter; and

an access door on the image forming device through which the toner cartridge is insertable into and removable from the image forming device,

wherein when the toner cartridge is installed in the image forming device, the linkage is positioned to receive a force upon the closing of the access door that causes the shutter to move from the closed position to the open position.

9. An electrophotographic image forming device, comprising:

a toner cartridge removably installable in the image forming device, the toner cartridge has a reservoir for storing toner and an outlet port in fluid communication with the reservoir for exiting toner from the toner cartridge, the toner cartridge has a shutter that is movable between a closed position blocking the outlet port and an open position unblocking the outlet port, the toner cartridge has a projection that is movable from a first position to a second position and that is operatively connected to the shutter such that the projection is in the first position when the shutter is in the closed position and the projection is in the second position when the shutter is in the open position;

a sensor positioned to detect whether the projection is in the first position or the second position when the toner cartridge is installed in the image forming device;

an alignment guide on an exterior of the toner cartridge; and

a guide slot in the image forming device formed between a first guide and a second guide opposite the first guide, the guide slot is positioned to receive the alignment guide to guide the toner cartridge as the toner cartridge is installed in the image forming device,

wherein when the projection is in the second position, the projection extends from the guide slot through an opening in the first guide.

10. An electrophotographic image forming device, comprising:

a toner cartridge removably installable in the image forming device, the toner cartridge has a reservoir for storing toner and an outlet port in fluid communication with the reservoir for exiting toner from the toner cartridge, the toner cartridge has a shutter that is movable between a closed position blocking the outlet port and an open position unblocking the outlet port, the toner cartridge has a projection that is movable from a first position to a second position and that is operatively connected to the shutter such that the projection is in the first position when the shutter is in the closed position and the projection is in the second position when the shutter is in the open position;

a sensor positioned to detect whether the projection is in the first position or the second position when the toner cartridge is installed in the image forming device;

an alignment guide on an exterior of the toner cartridge; and

a guide slot in the image forming device formed between a first guide and a second guide opposite the first guide, the guide slot is positioned to receive the alignment guide to guide the toner cartridge as the toner cartridge is installed in the image forming device,

wherein the sensor is positioned along the first guide.
