Abstract

A megasonic processing apparatus matches the fundamental resonant or higher-level harmonic frequencies of megasonic thickness-mode transducers to the fundamental resonant or higher-level harmonic frequencies of a plate or other mounting structure upon which the transducers are mounted. The multifrequency transducers are piezoelectric transducers operating in thickness mode at different operating frequencies. The thickness of the mounting plate at the transducer locations is selected to provide a resonant or harmonic frequency matched to that of its corresponding transducer. Two or more megasonic transducers are bonded to the same radiating surface.

Claims (15)

1. A sonic processing system comprising:

a tank for containing fluid;

a mounting plate having a uniform thickness and operatively coupled to and situated in the tank, the mounting plate having a first fundamental resonant frequency and a first harmonic frequency of a predetermined order of the first fundamental resonant frequency;

a plurality of piezoelectric transducers fastened on the mounting plate and having substantially the same resonant frequency, the resonant frequency being equal to a second fundamental resonant frequency and, the plurality of piezoelectric transducers having substantially the same harmonic frequency, the harmonic frequency being equal to a second harmonic frequency of the predetermined order of the second fundamental resonant frequency,

wherein at least one of the plurality of piezoelectric transducers is designated to operate at the second fundamental resonant frequency and at least another of the plurality of piezoelectric transducers is designated to operate at the second harmonic frequency, and

wherein the first fundamental resonant frequency substantially equals to the second fundamental resonant frequency, and first harmonic frequency substantially equals to the second harmonic frequency.

2. The sonic processing system of claim 1 , wherein the tank has a weir over which excess fluid flows.

3. The sonic processing system of claim 1 further comprising a pump and a filter to recirculate and clean the fluid.

4. The sonic processing system of claim 1 , wherein the mounting plate is attached to the tank.

5. The sonic processing system of claim 1 , wherein the first fundamental resonant frequency is approximately 470 KHz.

6. The sonic processing system of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined order is third.

7. The sonic processing system of claim 1 further comprising a generator coupled to the plurality of piezoelectric transducers for supplying driving signals at approximately the first fundamental resonant frequency and the first harmonic frequency.

8. The sonic processing system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of piezoelectric transducers have substantially the same dimensions.

9. The sonic processing system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of piezoelectric transducers are operated in thickness mode.

10. The sonic processing system of claim 1 , wherein the piezoelectric transducer designated to operate at the second fundamental resonant frequency is next to the piezoelectric transducer designated to operate at the second harmonic frequency.
