Abstract

General medication disposal systems are provided. Aspects of the systems include devices having a sealable container dimensioned to accommodate a pharmaceutical composition; and an amount of an inactivating substance, e.g., granulated or pelletized activated carbon, present inside of the of sealable container. Aspects of the invention further include methods of making and using the systems, as well as kits comprises the devices of the system.

56 . A method of disposing an amount of a pharmaceutical composition, the method comprising:

placing the amount of the pharmaceutical composition into a sealable container comprising an inactivating substance present inside of the of sealable container, wherein the inactivating substance is adhered to an inner surface of the container as a layer on the inner surface of the container; and

sealing the sealable container.

57 . The method according to claim 56 , wherein the container is configured as a pouch dimensioned to accommodate the pharmaceutical composition.

58 . The method according to claim 57 , wherein the pouch has dimensions ranging from 2×3 inches to 8×10 inches.

59 . The method according to claim 57 , wherein the pouch comprises walls having a thickness ranging from 0.1 to 2.0 mm.

60 . The method according to claim 56 , wherein the inactivating substance comprises activated carbon.

61 . The method according to claim 56 , wherein the sealable container comprises a sealable closure device.

62 . The method according to claim 61 , wherein the sealable closure device comprises an adhesive seal.

63 . The method according to claim 56 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition comprises an opioid.

64 . The method according to claim 63 , wherein the opioid is fentanyl.

65 . The method according to claim 56 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition is a solid.

66 . The method according to claim 65 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition is selected from the group consisting of a pill, tablet, capsule, topical composition and combinations thereof.

67 . The method according to claim 56 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition is a liquid.

68 . A method of disposing an amount of a pharmaceutical composition, the method comprising:

placing the amount of the pharmaceutical composition into a sealable pouch comprising a closure device and an inactivating substance present inside of the of sealable container, wherein the inactivating substance is adhered to an inner surface of the container as a layer on the inner surface of the container and comprises activated carbon; and

sealing the sealable container by closing the closure device.

69 . The method according to claim 68 , wherein the sealable closure device comprises an adhesive seal.

70 . The method according to claim 68 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition comprises an opioid.

71 . The method according to claim 70 , wherein the opioid is fentanyl.

72 . The method according to claim 68 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition is a solid.

73 . The method according to claim 68 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition is a liquid.

74 . A method of disposing an amount of a pharmaceutical composition comprising fentanyl, the method comprising:

placing the amount of the pharmaceutical composition into a sealable pouch comprising closure device that comprises an adhesive and an inactivating substance present inside of the of sealable container, wherein the inactivating substance is adhered to an inner surface of the container as a layer on the inner surface of the container and comprises activated carbon; and

sealing the sealable container by closing the closure device.

75 . The method according to claim 74 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition is a solid.

76 . The method according to claim 74 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition is a liquid.
