Abstract

A surgical cutting and fastening instrument is disclosed. The surgical cutting and fastening instrument comprises a pair of jaws comprising a distal end, a motor-powered firing member configured to move longitudinally along the pair of jaws toward the distal end, and a sensor configured to sense a fully-closed state of the pair of jaws. The surgical cutting and fastening instrument further comprises, one, a control circuit electrically coupled to the sensor, wherein the control circuit is configured to prevent a longitudinal movement of the firing member toward the distal end if the pair of jaws is not in the fully-closed state and, two, a remote user-controlled console.

Claims (36)

1. A surgical instrument, comprising:

an end effector configurable in a clamped configuration and an unclamped configuration, wherein said end effector comprises:

a frame;

a replaceable staple cartridge supported by said frame, wherein said staple cartridge comprises staples removably stored therein;

a firing member configured to eject said staples from said staple cartridge;

an anvil configured to deform said staples; and

a sensor configured to detect if said end effector is in said clamped configuration;

a closure system configured to place said end effector in said clamped configuration;

an electric motor configured to generate rotary motion;

a rotatable drive screw operably engaged with said electric motor, wherein said drive screw is threadably engaged with said firing member such that said rotary motion of said electric motor is converted to linear motion of said firing member;

a control system electrically coupled with said sensor and said electric motor, wherein said control system is configured to prevent said rotary motion of said electric motor if said sensor does not detect that said end effector is in said clamped configuration; and

a remote user-controlled console electrically coupled to said control system.

2. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said firing member is movable between a proximal position and a distal position during a firing stroke, wherein said sensor is configured to generate data regarding the configuration of said end effector, and wherein said control system is configured to record the position of said firing member and the data generated by said sensor.

3. A surgical cutting and fastening instrument, comprising:

a pair of jaws comprising a distal end;

a motor-powered firing member configured to move longitudinally along said pair of jaws toward said distal end;

a sensor configured to sense a fully-closed state of said pair of jaws;

a control circuit electrically coupled to said sensor, wherein said control circuit is configured to prevent a longitudinal movement of said firing member toward said distal end if said pair of jaws is not in said fully-closed state; and

a remote user-controlled console.

4. The surgical cutting and fastening instrument of claim 3 , wherein said pair of jaws comprises a first jaw and a second jaw, and wherein said first jaw is pivotably connected to said second jaw.

5. The surgical cutting and fastening instrument of claim 3 , wherein said sensor comprises an analog sensor or a digital sensor.

6. The surgical cutting and fastening instrument of claim 3 , wherein said control circuit comprises:

a memory device electrically coupled to said sensor, wherein said memory device is configured to record if said pair of jaws is in said fully-closed state; and

a processor electrically coupled to said memory device.

7. The surgical cutting and fastening instrument of claim 3 , further comprising an electric motor mechanically coupled to said motor-powered firing member.

8. A surgical instrument, comprising:

an end effector configurable in an open configuration and a closed configuration, wherein said end effector comprises:

a staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein;

a firing member configured to eject said staples from said staple cartridge during a firing stroke;

an anvil configured to deform said staples; and

a sensor configured to detect the configuration of said end effector;

a closure system movable to place said end effector in said closed configuration;

an electric motor configured to generate rotary motion;

a rotatable drive screw operably engaged with said electric motor, wherein said drive screw is configured to advance said firing member within said staple cartridge; and

a control system electrically coupled with said sensor and said electric motor, wherein said control system is configured to permit said rotary motion of said electric motor if said sensor detects that said end effector is in said closed configuration, and wherein said control system is configured to prevent said electric motor from moving said firing member through said firing stroke if said sensor detects that said end effector is in said open configuration.

9. The surgical instrument of claim 8 , wherein said firing member is movable between a proximal position and a distal position during said firing stroke, wherein said sensor is configured to generate data regarding a position of said end effector, and wherein said control system is configured to record the position of said firing member and the data generated by said sensor.
