Abstract

Disclosed are systems, hybrid compute environments, methods and computer-readable media for dynamically provisioning nodes for a workload. In the hybrid compute environment, each node communicates with a first resource manager associated with the first operating system and a second resource manager associated with a second operating system. The method includes receiving an instruction to provision at least one node in the hybrid compute environment from the first operating system to the second operating system, after provisioning the second operating system, pooling at least one signal from the resource manager associated with the at least one node, processing at least one signal from the second resource manager associated with the at least one node and consuming resources associated with the at least one node having the second operating system provisioned thereon.

Claims (13)

1. A compute environment having a plurality of compute nodes, the compute environment comprising:

a first compute node using a first operating system installed directly over hardware of the first compute node, the first operating system being associated with a first resource manager;

a second compute node using a second operating system installed directly over hardware of the second compute node, the second compute node being of a same type as the first compute node, the second operating system being associated with a second resource manager;

a first module configured to periodically perform an analysis of the plurality of compute nodes to determine how well the plurality of compute nodes complies with an established policy which defines a desired first number of compute nodes out of the plurality of compute nodes running the first operating system and a desired second number of compute nodes out of the plurality of compute nodes running the second operating system; and

a second module configured to control a processor, based on the analysis, to provision the first compute node of the plurality of compute nodes to change the first compute node from the first operating system to the second operating system.

2. A method comprising:

periodically performing an analysis of a plurality of compute nodes to determine how well the plurality of compute nodes complies with an established policy which defines a desired first number of compute nodes out of the plurality of compute nodes running a first operating system and a desired second number of compute nodes out of the plurality of compute nodes running a second operating system, wherein a first node of the plurality of compute nodes uses the first operating system installed directly over hardware of the first compute node, the first operating system being associated with a first resource manager, and wherein a second compute node uses the second operating system installed directly over hardware of the second compute nodes, the second compute node being of a same type as the first compute node, the second operating system being associated with a second resource manager; and

based on the analysis, changing the first compute node from the first operating system to the second operating system.

3. A compute environment comprising:

a processor; and

a computer-readable storage device storing instructions which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

periodically performing an analysis of a plurality of compute nodes to determine how well the plurality of compute nodes complies with an established policy which defines a desired first number of compute nodes out of the plurality of compute nodes running a first operating system and a desired second number of compute nodes out of the plurality of compute nodes running a second operating system, wherein a first node of the plurality of compute nodes uses the first operating system installed directly over hardware of the first compute node, the first operating system being associated with a first resource manager, and wherein a second compute node uses the second operating system installed directly over hardware of the second compute nodes, the second compute node being of a same type as the first compute node, the second operating system being associated with a second resource manager; and

based on the analysis, changing the first compute node from the first operating system to the second operating system.
