Abstract

An endoscopic forceps is provided and includes a housing having a shaft. An end effector assembly operatively connects to a distal end of the shaft and has a pair of first and second jaw members. One of the first and second jaw members is movable relative to the other jaw member from an open position, to a clamping position. One of the first and second jaw members includes one or more cam slots defined therein and configured to receive a cam member that upon movement thereof rotates the movable jaw member from the open position to the clamping position. A resilient member is operably coupled to the jaw member that includes the one or more cam slots. The resilient member is configured to provide a camming force to the cam slot and to bias the first and second jaw members in the clamping position.

Claims (22)

1. An endoscopic forceps, comprising:

a housing having a shaft that extends distally therefrom;

an end effector assembly operatively connected to a distal end of the shaft, the end effector including first and second jaw members, the first jaw member defining a cam slot configured to receive a cam member therein such that movement of the cam member through the cam slot positions the first and second jaw members between an open position, in which the first and second jaw members are disposed in spaced relation relative to one another, and a clamping position, in which the first and second jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween; and

a resilient member integrally formed with a proximal end of the first jaw member, the resilient member configured to flex as the cam member slides along the resilient member and through the cam slot to provide a predetermined closure force between the first and second jaw members.

2. The endoscopic forceps according to claim 1 , wherein the predetermined closure forces range between about 3 kg/cm 2 to about 16 kg/cm 2 .

3. The endoscopic forceps according to claim 1 , wherein the cam member is connected to a drive element that moves the cam member through the cam slot.

4. The endoscopic forceps according to claim 1 , wherein proximal movement of the cam member through the cam slot positions the first and second members in the clamping position, and distal movement of the cam member through the cam slot positions the first and second members in the open position.

5. The endoscopic forceps according to claim 1 , wherein a pivot extends between the first and second jaw members to enable pivotal movement between the first and second jaw members.

6. The endoscopic forceps according to claim 1 , wherein a slit is defined adjacent the resilient member, the slit configured to provide the resilient member with flexibility.

7. The endoscopic forceps according to claim 1 , wherein the cam slot is disposed at an angle transverse to a longitudinal axis extending through the shaft.

8. The endoscopic forceps according to claim 1 , wherein the resilient member includes a beam configuration.

9. The endoscopic forceps according to claim 8 , wherein the resilient member is cantilevered to the first jaw member.

10. An end effector for an endoscopic forceps, the end effector comprising:

first and second jaw members, the first jaw member defining a cam slot adapted to receive a cam member therein such that movement of the cam member through the cam slot positions the first and second jaw members between an open position, in which the first and second jaw members are disposed in spaced relation relative to one another, and a clamping position, in which the first and second jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween; and

a resilient member integrally formed with a proximal end of the first jaw member, wherein the resilient member flexes in response to sliding movement of the cam member along the resilient member and through the cam slot to provide a predetermined closure force between the first and second jaw members.

11. The end effector according to claim 10 , wherein the predetermined closure force is in the range of about 3 kg/cm 2 to about 16 kg/cm 2 .

12. The end effector according to claim 10 , wherein proximal movement of the cam member through the cam slot positions the first and second members in the clamping position, and distal movement of the cam member through the cam slot positions the first and second members in the open position.

13. The end effector according to claim 10 , wherein a pivot extends between the first and second jaw members to enable pivotal movement between the first and second jaw members.

14. The end effector according to claim 10 , wherein a slit is defined adjacent the resilient member, the slit configured to enhance flexibility of the resilient member.

15. The end effector according to claim 10 , wherein the cam slot is disposed at an angle transverse to a longitudinal axis extending through the shaft.

16. The end effector according to claim 10 , wherein the resilient member includes a beam configuration.

17. The end effector according to claim 16 , wherein the resilient member is cantilevered to the first jaw member.
