Abstract

The preferred embodiments of the present invention are directed to an improved mapping and navigational system. Specifically, the present invention is directed to a system for defining and assigning geographical boundaries to points of interests on a graphical map, where the geographical boundaries preferably correlate to spatially defined boundaries of the respective points of interests. In accordance with one embodiment of the present invention, the points of interest, along with the respective defined geographical boundaries, can be transferred from a personal computing device to a telecommunication device, such as a portable communication device, so as to be used for mapping purposes and to set off proximity alerts when the portable communication device, equipped with a GPS unit, enters or exits the geographical boundary of a particular point of interest.

Claims (49)

1. A method of triggering a geofence event in a wireless device, comprising:

displaying, on a physical wireless device, a map including a plurality of map objects;

determining a geofence around each of a plurality of map objects, each geofence being a virtual spatial boundary surrounding a respective map object;

visually displaying on said physical wireless device, said geofence around each of a plurality of map objects;

enabling selection on said physical wireless device, of at least one of said plurality of geofences;

monitoring a current location of said physical wireless device over time; and

triggering a notification to said physical wireless device when said physical wireless device is detected as entering or exiting an actual geographical area corresponding to a selected one of said plurality of geofences.

2. The method of triggering a geofence event in a wireless device according to claim 1 , wherein said enabling selection comprises:

a drag-and-drop feature in said physical wireless device.

3. The method of triggering a geofence event in a wireless device according to claim 2 , wherein said drag-and-drop feature comprises:

providing an icon to visually drop said selected geofence into.

4. The method of triggering a geofence event in a wireless device according to claim 1 , wherein:

said geofence includes a buffer region around a geographic area associated with a respective map object, to mitigate a false trigger associated with said physical wireless device traversing a boundary of said geofence.

5. The method of triggering a geofence event in a wireless device according to claim 1 , wherein:

said geofence is pre-defined for a particular location.

6. The method of triggering a geofence event in a wireless device according to claim 1 , wherein:

said geofence is polygonal shaped.

7. The method of triggering a geofence event in a wireless device according to claim 1 , wherein:

said geofence is polyline shaped.

8. The method of triggering a geofence event in a wireless device according to claim 1 , wherein:

said geofence is a virtual fixed boundary.

9. The method of triggering a geofence event in a wireless device according to claim 1 , wherein:

each map object represents a point of interest (POI).

10. A method of triggering a geofence event in a wireless device according to claim 1 , further comprising:

decimating said geofence around each of said plurality of map objects.

11. A method of triggering a geofence event in a wireless device according to claim 10 , wherein:

said decimation is performed using a Douglas-Peucker method.

12. A method of triggering a geofence event in a wireless device, comprising:

transmitting, from a physical network server to a physical wireless device, map data including a plurality of map objects for display thereon;

determining a geofence around each of said plurality of map objects, each geofence being a virtual spatial boundary surrounding a respective map object;

transmitting, from said physical network server to said physical wireless device, geofence data corresponding to a selected geofence around a map object selected on said physical wireless device for trigger monitoring;

monitoring a current location of said physical wireless device over time; and

triggering a notification to said physical wireless device when said physical wireless device is detected as entering or exiting an actual geographical area corresponding to said selected geofence.

13. The method of triggering a geofence event in a wireless device according to claim 12 , wherein:

said geofence includes a buffer region around a geographic area associated with a respective map object, to mitigate a false trigger associated with said physical wireless device traversing a boundary of said geofence.

14. The method of triggering a geofence event in a wireless device according to claim 12 , wherein:

said geofence is pre-defined for a particular location.

15. The method of triggering a geofence event in a wireless device according to claim 12 , wherein:

said geofence is polygonal shaped.

16. The method of triggering a geofence event in a wireless device according to claim 12 , wherein:

said geofence is polyline shaped.

17. The method of triggering a geofence event in a wireless device according to claim 12 , wherein:

said geofence is a virtual fixed boundary.

18. The method of triggering a geofence event in a wireless device according to claim 12 , wherein:

each map object represents a point of interest (POI).

19. A method of triggering a geofence event in a wireless device according to claim 12 , further comprising:

decimating said geofence around each of said plurality of map objects.

20. A method of triggering a geofence event in a wireless device according to claim 19 , wherein:

said decimation is performed using a Douglas-Peucker method.
