Abstract

A staple cartridge assembly is disclosed. The staple cartridge assembly comprises staples including a base, staple legs extending from the base, and a platform extending laterally from the base. The staple cartridge assembly further comprises an implantable layer. The platforms of the staples are configured to support the implantable layer when the staples are implanted into the tissue of a patient. Staples are also disclosed which included an implantable adjunct positioned over the platform of the staple. The implantable adjuncts can include one or more compressible pockets. One or more medicaments can be positioned in the compressible pockets.

Claims (77)

1. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a staple cartridge body, comprising:

a deck; and

staple cavities defined in said deck;

staples removably stored in said staple cavities, wherein each said staple is stamped from a sheet of material and comprises:

a base defining a base plane;

a leg extending from said base; and

a platform folded out of said base plane to extend laterally from said base; and

an implantable layer positioned over said deck, wherein said platforms of said staples are configured to abut said implantable layer when said staples are implanted into the tissue of a patient.

2. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1 , wherein said implantable layer comprises a woven material.

3. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1 , wherein said implantable layer comprises a non-woven material.

4. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a retention member extending from said leg adjacent said base, wherein said retention member is configured to engage said implantable layer when said staples are implanted into the tissue of a patient.

5. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1 , wherein said platform is flat.

6. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1 , wherein said platform is not directly attached to said leg.

7. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a staple cartridge body, comprising:

a deck; and

staple cavities defined in said deck;

staples removable stored in said staple cavities, wherein each said staple is stamped from a sheet of material and comprises:

a crown defining a crown plane;

a first leg and a second leg extending from said crown; and

a platform folded out of said crown plane to extend laterally from said crown; and

an implantable layer positioned over said deck, wherein said platforms of said staples are configured to support said implantable layer when said staples are implanted into the tissue of a patient.

8. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 7 , wherein said implantable layer comprises a woven material.

9. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 7 , wherein said implantable layer comprises a non-woven material.

10. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 7 , further comprising a retention member extending from said first leg adjacent said crown, wherein said retention member is configured to engage said implantable layer when said staples are implanted into the tissue of a patient.

11. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 7 , wherein said platform is flat.

12. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 7 , wherein each said staple comprises a compliant adjunct positioned adjacent said crown.

13. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 12 , wherein said compliant adjunct extends between said first leg and said second leg.

14. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 13 , wherein said compliant adjunct is attached to said first leg and said second leg.

15. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 14 , wherein said compliant adjunct comprises a first aperture and a second aperture, wherein said first leg extends through said first aperture, and wherein said second leg extends through said second aperture.

16. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 12 , wherein said compliant adjunct comprises a cavity and at least one medicament positioned in said cavity.

17. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 12 , wherein said compliant adjunct comprises a compressible enclosure.

18. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a staple cartridge body, comprising:

a deck; and

staple cavities defined in said deck;

staples removable stored in said staple cavities, wherein each said staple comprises:

a crown;

a first leg and a second leg extending from said crown; and

a platform extending laterally from said crown; and

a compliant adjunct positioned adjacent said crown and attached to said first and second leg and extending therebetween, said compliant adjunct comprising a first aperture and a second aperture, wherein said first leg extends through said first aperture, and wherein said second leg extends through said second aperture.

19. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 18 , wherein said compliant adjunct comprises a cavity and at least one medicament positioned in said cavity.

20. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 18 , wherein said compliant adjunct comprises a compressible enclosure.

21. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a staple cartridge body, comprising:

a deck; and

staple cavities defined in said deck;

staples removable stored in said staple cavities, wherein each said staple comprises:

a crown;

a first leg and a second leg extending from said crown; and

a platform extending laterally from said crown;

a compliant adjunct positioned adjacent said crown; and

an implantable layer positioned over said deck, wherein said platforms of said staples are configured to support said implantable layer when said staples are implanted into the tissue of a patient.

22. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 21 , wherein said compliant adjunct extends between said first leg and said second leg.

23. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 22 , wherein said compliant adjunct is attached to said first leg and said second leg.

24. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 23 , wherein said compliant adjunct comprises a first aperture and a second aperture, wherein said first leg extends through said first aperture, and wherein said second leg extends through said second aperture.

25. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 21 , wherein said compliant adjunct comprises a cavity and at least one medicament positioned in said cavity.

26. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 21 , wherein said compliant adjunct comprises a compressible enclosure.
