Abstract

Disclosed are implementations, including a method, performed at a processor-based mobile device, that includes receiving at the mobile device antenna information for a wireless node, including a transmitter gain for the wireless node in at least one message transmitted to the mobile device. The at least one message includes, a beacon frame message, a fine timing measurement (FTM) protocol-based message, and/or an assistance data message transmitted from a remote central repository. The method also includes deriving an estimate of a receiver gain for a receiver of the mobile device based, at least in part, on the transmitter gain for the wireless node, and adjusting one or more signal strength values determined for signals received from the wireless node based on the estimate of the receiver gain of the receiver of the mobile device derived based, at least in part, on the transmitter gain for the wireless node.

Claims (72)

1. A method comprising, at a processor-based mobile device:

receiving at the mobile device antenna information for a wireless node, including a transmitter gain for the wireless node, in at least one message transmitted to the mobile device, the at least one message including: a beacon frame message configured according to IEEE 802.11 standard transmitted from the wireless node, a fine timing measurement (FTM) protocol-based message, an assistance data message transmitted from a remote central repository of information, or any combination thereof;

deriving an estimate of a receiver gain for a receiver of the mobile device based, at least in part, on the transmitter gain for the wireless node; and

adjusting one or more signal strength values determined for signals received from the wireless node based on the estimate of the receiver gain of the receiver of the mobile device derived based, at least in part, on the transmitter gain for the wireless node.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining received signal strength indication (RSSI) values for the signals received from the wireless node;

wherein adjusting the one or more signal strength values comprises adjusting the RSSI values based on the estimate of the receiver gain derived based, at least in part, on the transmitter gain for the wireless node.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the antenna information received further includes transmission power for the wireless node, and wherein deriving the estimate of the receiver gain for the receiver of the mobile device comprises:

deriving the estimate of the receiver gain for the receiver of the mobile device based, at least in part, on the transmitter gain and the transmission power for the wireless node, according to:

Mobile_ R x— Gain=RSSI measured −(AP_Tx_Power+AP_Tx_Gain)

where RSSI measured is an RSSI value measured at the mobile device for one of the signals transmitted by the wireless node, AP_T x— Power is the transmission power of the wireless node, and AP_T x— Gain is the transmitter gain for the wireless node.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining distance to the wireless node based on the adjusted one or more signal strength values.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying a location estimate in a heatmap based on the adjusted one or more signal strength values.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

generating a heatmap based, at least in part, on the adjusted one or more signal strength values.

7. A mobile device comprising:

at least one transceiver to communicate with one or more remote devices;

memory; and

one or more processors coupled to the memory and the at least one transceiver;

the mobile device configured to:

receive antenna information for a wireless node, including a transmitter gain for the wireless node, in at least one message transmitted to the mobile device, the at least one message including: a beacon frame message configured according to IEEE 802.11 standard transmitted from the wireless node, a fine timing measurement (FTM) protocol-based message, an assistance data message transmitted from a remote central repository of information, or any combination thereof;

derive an estimate of a receiver gain for a receiver of the mobile device based, at least in part, on the transmitter gain for the wireless node; and

adjust one or more signal strength values determined for signals received from the wireless node based on the estimate of the receiver gain of the receiver of the mobile device derived based, at least in part, on the transmitter gain for the wireless node.

8. The mobile device of claim 7 , wherein the mobile device is further configured to:

determine received signal strength indication (RSSI) values for the signals received from the wireless node;

wherein the mobile device configured to adjust the one or more signal strength values is configured to adjust the RSSI values based on the estimate of the receiver gain derived based, at least in part, on the transmitter gain for the wireless node.

9. The mobile device of claim 7 , wherein the antenna information received further includes transmission power for the wireless node, and wherein the mobile device configured to derive the estimate of the receiver gain for the receiver of the mobile device is configured to:

derive the estimate of the receiver gain for the receiver of the mobile device based, at least in part, on the transmitter gain and the transmission power for the wireless node, according to:

Mobile_ R x— Gain=RSSI measured −(AP_Tx_Power+AP_Tx_Gain)

where RSSI measured is an RSSI value measured at the mobile device for one of the signals transmitted by the wireless node, AP_T x— Power is the transmission power of the wireless node, and AP_T x— Gain is the transmitter gain for the wireless node.

10. The mobile device of claim 7 , wherein the mobile device is further configured to:

determine distance to the wireless node based on the adjusted one or more signal strength values.

11. The mobile device of claim 7 , wherein the mobile device is further configured to:

identify a location estimate in a heatmap based on the adjusted one or more signal strength values.

12. The mobile device of claim 7 , wherein the mobile device is further configured to:

generate a heatmap based, at least in part, on the adjusted one or more signal strength values.

13. A mobile device comprising:

means for receiving antenna information for a wireless node, including a transmitter gain for the wireless node, in at least one message transmitted to the mobile device, the at least one message including: a beacon frame message configured according to IEEE 802.11 standard transmitted from the wireless node, a fine timing measurement (FTM) protocol-based message, an assistance data message transmitted from a remote central repository of information, or any combination thereof;

means for deriving an estimate of a receiver gain for a receiver of the mobile device based, at least in part, on the transmitter gain for the wireless node; and

means for adjusting one or more signal strength values determined for signals received from the wireless node based on the estimate of the receiver gain of the receiver of the mobile device derived based, at least in part, on the transmitter gain for the wireless node.

14. The mobile device of claim 13 , further comprising:

means for determining received signal strength indication (RSSI) values for the signals received from the wireless node;

wherein the means for adjusting the one or more signal strength values comprises means for adjusting the RSSI values based on the estimate of the receiver gain derived based, at least in part, on the transmitter gain for the wireless node.

15. The mobile device of claim 13 , wherein the antenna information received further includes transmission power for the wireless node, and wherein the means for deriving the estimate of the receiver gain for the receiver of the mobile device comprises:

means for deriving the estimate of the receiver gain for the receiver of the mobile device based, at least in part, on the transmitter gain and the transmission power for the wireless node, according to:

Mobile_ R x— Gain=RSSI measured −(AP_Tx_Power+AP_Tx_Gain)

where RSSI measured is an RSSI value measured at the mobile device for one of the signals transmitted by the wireless node, AP_T x— Power is the transmission power of the wireless node, and AP_T x— Gain is the transmitter gain for the wireless node.

16. The mobile device of claim 13 , further comprising:

means for determining distance to the wireless node based on the adjusted one or more signal strength values.

17. The mobile device of claim 13 , further comprising:

means for identifying a location estimate in a heatmap based on the adjusted one or more signal strength values.

18. The mobile device of claim 13 , further comprising:

means for generating a heatmap based, at least in part, on the adjusted one or more signal strength values.

19. A non-transitory computer readable media programmed with a set of instructions, executable on a processor, to:

receive at a mobile device antenna information for a wireless node, including a transmitter gain for the wireless node, in at least one message transmitted to the mobile device, the at least one message including: a beacon frame message configured according to IEEE 802.11 standard transmitted from the wireless node, a fine timing measurement (FTM) protocol-based message, an assistance data message transmitted from a remote central repository of information, or any combination thereof;

derive an estimate of a receiver gain for a receiver of the mobile device based, at least in part, on the transmitter gain for the wireless node; and

adjust one or more signal strength values determined for signals received from the wireless node based on the estimate of the receiver gain of the receiver of the mobile device derived based, at least in part, on the transmitter gain for the wireless node.

20. The computer readable media of claim 19 , wherein the set of instructions further comprises instructions to:

determine received signal strength indication (RSSI) values for the signals received from the wireless node;

wherein the instructions to adjust the one or more signal strength values comprise instructions to adjust the RSSI values based on the estimate of the receiver gain derived based, at least in part, on the transmitter gain for the wireless node.

21. The computer readable media of claim 19 , wherein the antenna information received further includes transmission power for the wireless node, and wherein the instructions to derive the estimate of the receiver gain for the receiver of the mobile device comprise instructions to:

derive the estimate of the receiver gain for the receiver of the mobile device based, at least in part, on the transmitter gain and the transmission power for the wireless node, according to:

Mobile_ R x— Gain=RSSI measured −(AP_Tx_Power+AP_Tx_Gain)

where RSSI measured is an RSSI value measured at the mobile device for one of the signals transmitted by the wireless node, AP_T x— Power is the transmission power of the wireless node, and AP_T x— Gain is the transmitter gain for the wireless node.

22. The computer readable media of claim 19 , wherein the set of instructions further comprises instructions to:

determine distance to the wireless node based on the adjusted one or more signal strength values.

23. The computer readable media of claim 19 , wherein the set of instructions further comprises instructions to:

identify a location estimate in a heatmap based on the adjusted one or more signal strength values.

24. The computer readable media of claim 19 , wherein the set of instructions further comprises instructions to:

generate a heatmap based, at least in part, on the adjusted one or more signal strength values.
