Abstract

A system graphically plots articles. The system executes one or more search queries to search stored articles and receives results of the executed one or more search queries, where the results identify selected articles of the stored articles. The system further designates a graphical marker for each of the selected articles and plots each of the graphical markers on a graphical display.

clustering the plurality of content items into a set of groups of content items based on a date associated with each content item;

ranking the set of groups of content items;

generating, using the computing device, a representation of the content by identifying a subset of groups of content items based on the rankings and a number of groups that are allowed to display on available space of a graphical user interface, representing a group in the subset as a line along a dimension of time in the graphical user interface, assigning a content item in the subset of groups an individual marker, and plotting, in the graphical user interface, the content items in the group as a sequence of different markers on the line representing the group;

receiving, using the computing device, a user input via the graphical user interface in which a user selects a marker corresponding to the first content item; and

responsive to the user input, generating, using the computing device, a scrapbook including the first content item for display on the graphical user interface in which the first content item is rendered as one or more content images.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the content includes a plurality of content types from the group of images, blogs, emails, news group postings, web pages, documents, files, and news articles.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying, using the computing device, updated content including a second content item; and

updating, using the computing device, the scrapbook with the second content item.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 3 , wherein identifying the updated content comprises re-executing the search query and executing an updated search query.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

providing, using the computing device, a document including a link to the first content item.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the different markers are graphical markers, further comprising:

determining, using the computing device, a first graphical marker to represent the first content item in the representation, the first graphical marker corresponding to a content type of the first content item; and

wherein the first graphical marker is part of the graphical user interface; and

wherein receiving the user input comprises selecting the first graphical marker from the representation.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 6 ,

wherein identifying the content includes identifying a second content item;

wherein generating the representation of the content includes plotting a first content group including the first content item and a second content group including the second content item as different sequences of graphical markers along the dimension representing time;

wherein receiving the user input includes selecting the first content group; and

wherein generating the scrapbook including the first content item responsive to the user input includes generating the scrapbook including the selected first content group.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, using the computing device, a request to retrieve the content included in the scrapbook; and

providing, using the computing device, the content responsive to the request.

9. A system comprising:

a memory; and

one or more processors coupled to the memory, the one or more processors configured to:

receive a search query relating to a particular period of time and a topic;

identify content including a plurality of content items by executing the search query, wherein the plurality of content items include a first content item;

cluster the plurality of content items into a set of groups of content items based on a date associated with each content item;

rank the set of groups of content items;

generate a representation of the content by identifying a subset of groups of content items based on the rankings and a number of groups that are allowed to display on available space of a graphical user interface, representing a group in the subset as a line along a dimension of time in the graphical user interface, assigning a content item in the subset of groups an individual marker, and plotting, in the graphical user interface, the content items in the group as a sequence of different markers on the line representing the group;

receive a user input via the graphical user interface in which a user selects a marker corresponding to the first content item; and

responsive to the user input, generate a scrapbook including the first content item for display on the graphical user interface in which the first content item is rendered as one or more content images.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the content includes a plurality of content types from the group of images, blogs, emails, news group postings, web pages, documents, files, and news articles.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

identify updated content including a second content item; and

update the scrapbook with the second content item.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the identification of the updated content comprises re-executing the search query and executing an updated search query.

13. The system of claim 9 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

provide a document including a link to the first content item.

14. The system of claim 9 , wherein the different markers are graphical markers, wherein the processor is further configured to:

determine a first graphical marker to represent the first content item in the representation, the first graphical marker corresponding to a content type of the first content item; and

wherein the first graphical marker is part of the graphical user interface; and

wherein receiving the user input comprises selecting the first graphical marker from the representation.

15. The system of claim 14 ,

wherein the identification of the content includes identifying a second content item;

wherein generation of the representation of the content includes plotting a first content group including the first content item and a second content group including the second content item as different sequences of graphical markers along the dimension representing time;

wherein the receiving of the user input includes selecting the first content group; and

wherein generation of the scrapbook including the first content item responsive to the user input includes generating the scrapbook including the selected first content group.

16. The system of claim 9 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

receive a request to retrieve the content included in the scrapbook; and

provide the content responsive to the request.

17. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions, the instructions which, when executed by a processor, causes the processor to:

receive a search query relating to a particular period of time and a topic;

identify content including a plurality of content items by executing the search query, wherein the plurality of content items include a first content item;

cluster the plurality of content items into a set of groups of content items based on a date associated with each content item;

rank the set of groups of content items;

generate a representation of the content by identifying a subset of groups of content items based on the rankings and a number of groups that are allowed to display on available space of a graphical user interface, representing a group in the subset as a line along a dimension of time in the graphical user interface, assigning a content item in the subset of groups an individual marker, and plotting, in the graphical user interface, the content items in the group as a sequence of different markers on the line representing the group;

receive a user input via the graphical user interface in which a user selects a marker corresponding to the first content item; and

responsive to the user input, generate a scrapbook including the first content item for display on the graphical user interface in which the first content item is rendered as one or more content images.
