Surgical adjuncts and medicants for promoting lung function
View Patent ↗Surgical adjuncts and medicants for promoting lung function are provided. In general, an implantable adjunct can have one or more medicants releasably retained therein that are configured to promote lung function. The adjunct can be configured to be applied to lung tissue in conjunction with surgical staples using a surgical stapler. The one or more medicants can be configured to promote lung function in a variety of ways. For example, the one or more medicants can be effective to increase oxygen concentration. For another example of the one or more medicants being configured to promote lung function, the at least one medicant can be configured to treat contaminants in lung tissue.
1. A staple cartridge assembly for use with a surgical stapler, comprising:
a cartridge body having a plurality of staple cavities, each staple cavity having a surgical staple disposed therein;
a biocompatible adjunct material releasably retained on the cartridge body and configured to be delivered to lung tissue by deployment of the staples in the cartridge body to form at least one line of deployed staples, the biocompatibale adjunct material including a layer configured to directly contact and conform to lung tissue when the adjunct material is delivered to lung tissue, and the adjunct material including a second layer positioned between the first layer and the cartridge body; and
an effective amount of at least one medicant, the at least one medicant being disposed within and releasable from the first layer of the adjunct material, the second layer being configured to prevent the at least one medicant from passing therethrough, the at least one medicant being effective to increase oxygen concentration of blood adjacent the at least one line of deployed staples.
2. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the at least one medicant is effective to increase oxygen concentration of blood by being effective to promote elastic deposition.
3. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the at least one medicant is effective to increase oxygen concentration of blood by being effective to promote elastin release.
4. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the at least one medicant is effective to increase oxygen concentration of blood by being effective to promote separation of alveoli by promoting presence of surfactant at the alveoli.
5. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the at least one medicant includes at least one an antimicrobial agent, an immunosuppresant, a bronchodilator, and a corticosteroid.
6. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first layer is configured to disintegrate over an extended period of time to release the at least one medicant therefrom.
7. The end effector of claim 6 , wherein the first layer is configured to disintegrate over more than one day.
8. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the adjunct material is configured to expand with the lung tissue such that the adjunct material has a first width before being deployed to the lung tissue and a second width after being deployed to lung tissue, the second width being greater than the first width.
9. An end effector for a surgical instrument, comprising:
a first jaw having a cartridge body removably attached thereto, the cartridge body having on a tissue-facing surface thereof a plurality of staple cavities configured to seat staples therein;
a second jaw having an anvil with a plurality of staple forming cavities formed on a tissue-facing surface thereof, wherein at least one of the first and second jaws is movable relative to the other;
a biocompatible adjunct material releasably retained on at least one of the tissue-facing surfaces of the first and second jaws and configured to be delivered to tissue by deployment of the staples in the cartridge body to form at least one line of deployed staples, the biocompatible adjunct material having a first layer and a second layer, the second being positioned between the at least one of the tissue-facing surfaces and the first layer; and
an effective amount of at least one medicant, the at least one medicant being disposed within and releasable from the first layer of the adjunct material, the at least one medicant being effective to increase oxygen concentration of blood adjacent the least one line of deployed staples,
wherein the first layer is configured to disintegrate over an extended period of time to release the at least one medicant therefrom.
10. The end effector of claim 9 , wherein the at least one medicant is effective to increase oxygen concentration of blood by being effective to promote at least one of elastic deposition, elastin release, and separation of alveoli by promoting presence of surfactant at the alveoli.
11. The end effector of claim 9 , wherein the at least one medicant includes at least one an antimicrobial agent, an immunosuppresant, a bronchodilator, and a corticosteroid.
12. The end effector of claim 9 , wherein the second layer is configured to prevent the at least one medicant from passing therethrough.
13. The end effector of claim 9 , wherein the first layer is configured to disintegrate over more than one hour.
14. The end effector of claim 9 , wherein the first layer is configured to disintegrate over more than one day.
