Abstract

A system for determining real time location of leaf node device, the system including at least one battery-powered Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) enabled leaf node device, wherein the at least one leaf node device is associated with a corresponding monitored asset; and at least one beam forming reader node in communication, via BLE, with the at least one leaf node, the reader node creating a plurality of sectorized beams in a plurality of sectors and collecting data related to the at least one leaf node device from at least one of the plurality of sectors, wherein a location processing facility determines the real-time location of the at least one leaf node device based on the data collected by the beam forming reader node.

Claims (18)

1. A system for determining a real time location of a leaf node device, the system comprising:

at least one battery-powered Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) enabled leaf node device, wherein the at least one leaf node device is associated with a corresponding monitored asset, wherein the at least one leaf node device transmits data via BLE communication signals on each channel of a plurality of channels, wherein each channel comprises a different frequency band; and

at least two beam forming reader nodes in communication, via BLE communication signals, with the at least one leaf node, each of the reader nodes including a corresponding plurality of antenna elements for producing a corresponding specific radiation pattern of a plurality of sectorized beams in a corresponding plurality of sectors, wherein each of the reader nodes is enabled to receive communication signals in each sector of its corresponding plurality of sectors on each of the plurality of channels, and wherein each of the reader nodes collects, in at least one sector common to both of the corresponding plurality of sectors, corresponding signal strength data from the at least one leaf node device in the at least one common sector from at least two different sectorized beams of its corresponding plurality of sectorized beams at the same time,

wherein a location processing facility determines the presence of the at least one leaf node device in the at least one common sector and the real-time location of the at least one leaf node device in the at least one common sector based on the corresponding signal strength data from the corresponding at least two different sectorized beams collected by each of the at least two beam forming reader nodes and based on a triangulation calculation.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the at least two beam forming reader nodes comprises a corresponding plurality of physical radios associated with each sector of the corresponding plurality of sectors.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the at least two beam forming reader nodes shapes its corresponding sectorized beams with a corresponding plurality of patch antennas.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the corresponding plurality of patch antennas is used to form four corresponding sectorized beams around the corresponding one of the at least two beam forming reader nodes.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein, for at least one of the at least two beam forming reader nodes, the corresponding sectorized beams collectively cover a 360-degree angle in a plane around that beam forming reader node.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein, for at least one of the at least two beam forming reader nodes, the corresponding sectorized beams are at least partially overlapping.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the location processing facility is in at least one of the at least two beam forming reader nodes.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one leaf node device is an asset tag on a physical asset.

9. The system of claim 8 further comprising a sensor in communication with the at least one leaf node device detecting status information related to the asset.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the sensor is a temperature sensor.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the sensor is an accelerometer.

12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the sensor is a pressure sensor.

13. The system of claim 9 , wherein the sensor is a light sensor.

14. The system of claim 1 , wherein communication is established with a corresponding beam forming reader node when that beam forming reader node receives data from the at least one leaf node and subsequently that beam forming reader node hands off communication with the at least one leaf node to a data channel of its corresponding plurality of channels or a different channel.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the corresponding plurality of channels are BLE advertisement channels.
