Abstract

Methods of treating language, behavioral and social disorders are described, including methods of treating language disorders associated with electrographic abnormalities in the primary or associative language cortex of persons with autism spectrum disorders, pervasive developmental delay or acquired epileptic aphasia. A language, behavioral and social disorder may be treated by detecting epileptiform activity or an electrographic seizure for a subject's brain and applying neurostimulation to a language cortical region of the subject's brain (e.g., a primary or associative language cortical region). Detection of epileptiform activity or an electrographic seizure and stimulation of language cortex may be performed by a sensing and/or stimulation electrode that is inserted into a subject's brain and connected to one or more neurostimulation devices for monitoring and/or stimulating the language cortex.

Claims (17)

1. An implantable responsive neurostimulator for treating a language disorder in a patient, comprising:

at least one first electrode configured to be implanted in a first region of the patient's brain, the first region being related to the language disorder;

at least one second electrode configured to be implanted in a second region of the patient's brain, the second region of the patient's brain for treating the language disorder;

at least one third electrode configured to be implanted in a third region of the patient's brain for treating the language disorder, wherein the third region is different from both the first region and the second region;

a detection subsystem coupled to the at least one first electrode, and configured to:

continuously monitor one or more electrical signals sensed from the first region of the patient's brain during a selected period when the patient is experiencing a stage of sleep;

detect in the one or more electrical signals an occurrence of a neurological event that causes a language disorder; and

a therapy subsystem coupled to the at least one second electrode, and the at least one third electrode, and configured to, in response to a detection of an occurrence of a neurological event:

apply neurostimulation through the at least one second electrode to the second region of the patient's brain; and

apply neurostimulation through the at least one third electrode to the third region of the patient's brain.

2. The neurostimulator of claim 1 , further comprising at least one additional electrode configured to be implanted in or adjacent the first region, and wherein the detection subsystem is coupled to the at least one additional electrode and is configured to continuously monitor one or more electrical signals sensed from the first region of the patient's brain by being further configured to continuously monitoring one or more electrical signals sensed by the at least one additional electrode.

3. The neurostimulator of claim 1 , further comprising at least one additional electrode configured to be implanted in or adjacent the second region, and wherein the therapy subsystem is coupled to the at least one additional electrode and is configured to, in response to a detection of an occurrence of a neurological event, apply neurostimulation to the second region of the patient's brain by being further configured to apply stimulation through the at least one additional electrode.

4. The neurostimulator of claim 1 , wherein the first region and the second region are substantially the same region.

5. The neurostimulator of claim 1 , wherein the second region is a primary or associative language cortical region.

6. The neurostimulator of claim 1 , wherein the third region is selected from a group consisting of: a cingulate gyms and a non-cortical region of a nervous system.

7. The neurostimulator of claim 1 , wherein the neurological event comprises at least one of epileptiform activity that causes a language disorder, and an electrographic seizure that causes a language disorder.

8. The neurostimulator of claim 1 , wherein the therapy subsystem is further coupled to the at least one first electrode and is further configured to apply neurostimulation to at least one of the first region, the second region, and the third region at a plurality of scheduled intervals during the selected period even in an absence of a detection of an occurrence of a neurological event.
