Abstract

A method of operating a refrigeration system that receives power from an electrical grid includes operating at least one component of the refrigeration system in a first state. The method includes detecting a fault event of the electrical grid in response to a concurrent increase in amount of current drawn by the component and decrease in voltage of power received by the component. The method includes, in response to detecting the fault event, switching the component from the first state to a second state, wherein the component consumes less power in the second state than in the first state. The method includes determining a first delay period according to a random process. The method includes identifying a conclusion of the fault event. The method includes, in response to the conclusion of the fault event, waiting for the first delay period before switching the component back to the first state.

Claims (43)

1. A method of operating a refrigeration system that receives power from an electrical grid, the method comprising:

selectively operating at least one component of the refrigeration system in a first state;

selectively detecting a fault event of the electrical grid in response to a concurrent (i) increase in amount of current drawn by the at least one component and (ii) decrease in voltage of power received by the at least one component;

in response to detecting the fault event, switching the at least one component from the first state to a second state, wherein the at least one component consumes less power in the second state than in the first state;

determining a first delay period according to a random process;

identifying a conclusion of the fault event; and

in response to the conclusion of the fault event, waiting for the first delay period before switching the at least one component back to the first state.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein, while operated in the second state, the at least one component is off and consumes no current.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the refrigeration system includes a compressor driven by a motor, wherein the at least one component includes the motor, and wherein the second state interrupts power to the motor.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first delay period is further determined based on a lowest value of the voltage during a period between detecting the fault event and identifying the conclusion of the fault event.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the first delay period includes selecting a random value from within a first range of delay periods.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising increasing an upper limit of the first range based on a count of detected fault events of the electrical grid.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein increasing the upper limit of the first range includes increasing the upper limit of the first range in an exponential relationship to the count of detected fault events of the electrical grid.

8. The method of claim 6 , further comprising resetting the count of detected fault events of the electrical grid in response to a time period, during which the at least one component remains in the first state, surpassing a first time threshold.

9. The method of claim 6 , further comprising preventing the at least one component from switching back to the first state in response to the count of detected fault events of the electrical grid reaching a first event threshold.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the conclusion of the fault event is identified in response to the voltage exceeding a first voltage threshold; and

the method further comprises restarting the first delay period in response to the voltage falling below the first voltage threshold.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein:

the first voltage threshold is based on a measurement of the voltage plus a predetermined percentage increase; and

the measurement of the voltage is recorded in response to detecting the fault event.

12. A refrigeration system receiving power from an electrical grid, the refrigeration system comprising:

a control module configured to selectively operate at least one component of the refrigeration system in a first state; and

a monitor module configured to selectively detect a fault event of the electrical grid in response to a concurrent (i) increase in amount of current drawn by the at least one component and (ii) decrease in voltage of power received by the at least one component,

wherein the control module is configured to, in response to detecting the fault event:

switch the at least one component from the first state to a second state, wherein the at least one component consumes less power in the second state than in the first state;

determine a first delay period according to a random process;

identify a conclusion of the fault event; and

in response to identifying the conclusion of the fault event, wait for the first delay period before switching the at least one component back to the first state.

13. The refrigeration system of claim 12 , wherein, while operated in the second state, the at least one component is off and consumes no current.

14. The refrigeration system of claim 12 further comprising a compressor driven by a motor, wherein the at least one component includes the motor, and wherein the second state interrupts power to the motor.

15. The refrigeration system of claim 12 , wherein the control module is configured to determine the first delay period further based on a lowest value of the voltage during a period between detecting the fault event and identifying the conclusion of the fault event.

16. The refrigeration system of claim 12 , wherein the control module is configured to determine the first delay period by selecting a random value from within a first range of delay periods.

17. The refrigeration system of claim 16 , wherein the control module is configured to increase an upper limit of the first range based on a count of detected fault events of the electrical grid.

18. The refrigeration system of claim 17 , wherein the control module is configured to increase the upper limit of the first range in an exponential relationship to the count of detected fault events of the electrical grid.

19. The refrigeration system of claim 17 , wherein the control module is configured to reset the count of detected fault events of the electrical grid in response to a time period, during which the at least one component remains in the first state, surpassing a first time threshold.

20. The refrigeration system of claim 17 , wherein the control module is configured to prevent the at least one component from switching back to the first state in response to the count of detected fault events of the electrical grid reaching a first event threshold.

21. The refrigeration system of claim 12 , wherein the control module is configured to:

identify the conclusion of the fault event in response to the voltage exceeding a first voltage threshold; and

restart the first delay period in response to the voltage falling below the first voltage threshold.

22. The refrigeration system of claim 21 , wherein the control module is configured to:
