Abstract

Systems and methods allow an administrator of a conference call bridge to control who is admitted to the conference call bridge. The systems and methods also allow the administrator to identify a new individual who will become the administrator of the conference call bridge when a triggering event occurs. The systems and methods also allow an administrator to identify a new endpoint device from which valid control commands can be received.

Claims (34)

1 . A method of altering the settings of an existing conference call bridge that is controlled by commands issued from a first endpoint device such that the conference call bridge can be controlled by commands issued from a second endpoint device, comprising:

receiving an instruction to alter the settings of a conference call bridge that is presently being controlled by commands issued from a first endpoint device such that the conference call bridge can be controlled by commands issued from a second endpoint device, where the received instruction includes information that identifies the second endpoint device; and

altering the settings of the conference call bridge such that the conference call bridge can be controlled by commands issued from the second endpoint device.

2 . The method of claim 1 , where the instruction is received from the first endpoint device, and where the instruction includes a telephone number assigned to the second endpoint device.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the altering step comprises:

placing a call to the telephone number of the second endpoint device;

connecting the second endpoint device to the conference call bridge when the call is answered from the second endpoint device; and

altering the settings of the conference call bridge such that the conference call bridge can be controlled by commands issued from the second endpoint device.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the altering step further comprises altering the settings of the conference call bridge such that the conference call bridge can no longer be controlled by commands issued from the first endpoint device.

5 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the altering step comprises altering the settings of the conference call bridge such that the conference call bridge can be controlled by commands issued from both the first and second endpoint devices.

6 . The method of claim 1 , where the instruction is received from the second endpoint device.

7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the instruction is received from the second endpoint device while the second endpoint device is connected to the conference call bridge.

8 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the method further comprises:

requesting that a control code be provided through the second endpoint device;

receiving input from the second endpoint device that is provided in response to the request for a control code; and

determining if the received input comprises a valid control code, wherein the altering step is performed only if the received input is determined to be a valid control code.

9 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the altering step further comprises altering the settings of the conference call bridge such that the conference call bridge can no longer be controlled by commands issued from the first endpoint device.

10 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the altering step comprises altering the settings of the conference call bridge such that the conference call bridge can be controlled by commands issued from both the first and second endpoint devices.

11 . A system for altering the settings of an existing conference call bridge that is controlled by commands issued from a first endpoint device such that the conference call bridge can be controlled by commands issued from a second endpoint device, comprising:

means for receiving an instruction to alter the settings of a conference call bridge that is currently being controlled by commands from a first endpoint device such that the conference call bridge can be controlled by commands issued from a second endpoint device, where the received instruction includes information that identifies the second endpoint device; and

altering the settings of the conference call bridge such that the conference call bridge can be controlled by commands issued from the second endpoint device.

12 . A system for altering the settings of an existing conference call bridge that is controlled by commands issued from a first endpoint device such that the conference call bridge can be controlled by commands issued from a second endpoint device, comprising:

a bridge control unit comprising at least one processor that receives a machine readable message bearing an instruction to alter the settings of a conference call bridge that is currently being controlled by commands issued from a first endpoint device such that the conference call bridge can be controlled by commands issued from a second endpoint device, where the received message includes information that identifies the second endpoint device, wherein the bridge control unit causes the settings of the conference call bridge to be altered such that the conference call bridge can be controlled by commands issued from the second endpoint device.

13 . The system of claim 12 , where the bridge control unit receives the message from the first endpoint device, and where the instruction includes a telephone number assigned to the second endpoint device.

14 . The system of claim 13 , further comprising a call handling unit, wherein the bridge control unit causes the settings of the conference call bridge to be altered by:

causing the call handling unit to place a telephone call to the telephone number of the second endpoint device, and to connect the second endpoint device to the conference call bridge when the call is answered from the second endpoint device; and

altering the settings of the conference call bridge such that the conference call bridge can be controlled by commands issued from the second endpoint device.

15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the bridge control unit also alters the settings of the conference call bridge such that the conference call bridge can no longer be controlled by commands issued from the first endpoint device.

16 . The system of claim 14 , wherein bridge control unit also alters the settings of the conference call bridge such that the conference call bridge can be controlled by commands issued from both the first and second endpoint devices.

17 . The system of claim 12 , where the bridge control unit receives the message from the second endpoint device.

18 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the bridge control unit receives the message from the second endpoint device while the second endpoint device is connected to the conference call bridge.

The system of claim 17 , wherein the bridge control unit requests that a control code be provided through the second endpoint device, receives input from the second endpoint device that is provided in response to the request for a control code, and determines whether the received input comprises a valid control code, and wherein the bridge control unit only alters the settings of the conference call bridge such that the conference call bridge can be controlled by commands issued from the second endpoint device if the received input is determined to be a valid control code.

20 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the bridge control unit also alters the settings of the conference call bridge such that the conference call bridge can no longer be controlled by commands issued from the first endpoint device.

21 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the bridge control unit also alters the settings of the conference call bridge such that the conference call bridge can be controlled by commands issued from both the first and second endpoint devices.
