Abstract

Connector assemblies formed by attaching two stamped housing sections to form a connector housing having a housing groove with a groove bottom and two side walls are disclosed. Using stamped housing sections can reduce manufacturing costs and simplifies assembly, among other things. The connector housings with a canted coil spring can be used as a mechanical connector and/or as an electrical connector for numerous applications and across numerous industries. The canted coil springs can have complex shapes, with optional dimples.

Claims (31)

1. A method of assembling a connector comprising:

providing a connector housing comprising at least two housing sections and wherein at least one of the two housing sections has a contour formed by cold working a die; said housing comprising a housing groove comprising a bottom wall located between two sidewalls;

placing a canted coil spring inside the housing groove, said canted coil spring comprising a plurality of coils each with three or more straight segments and defining an angle α and angle β between the three or more straight segments;

wherein a base of each coil forms a line contact with the bottom wall of the housing groove;

wherein the connector housing has two openings and wherein a pin is inserted through a ring center of the canted coil spring and the two openings of the connector housing; and

wherein two of the three straight segments are side segments and one of the three straight segments is a bottom segment joining each of the two side segments at a right angle, and wherein a radially outwardly curved upper segment joins to the two side segments.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the two housing sections abut one another at each respective end edge.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pin comprises a convex protrusion and wherein the plurality of coils each comprises a dimple in contact with the convex protrusion.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein angle α is equal to angle β, angle α is greater than angle β, or angle α is less than angle β.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of coils each comprises a dimple and wherein each coil has two contact points with the pin at the dimple.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the curved upper segment has a dimple.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pin has a solid end wall at an insertion end.

8. A connector assembly comprising:

a connector housing in which at least one housing section is formed by stamping and having a shape formed by cold working a blank with a die, said connector housing comprising a housing groove comprising at least one of a V-bottom, a flat bottom surface and two parallel sidewalls, a flat bottom surface and two tapered sidewalls, a flat bottom surface and two chamfered sidewalls with a lip, and a single tapered bottom surface with a sidewall;

a canted coil spring comprising a plurality of coils with a coil axis passing through the plurality of coils located in the housing groove, each coil of the plurality of coils having four sides including at least one straight segment for forming a line contact with a groove bottom of the housing groove; the at least one straight segment is connected to two side segments at right angles and the two side segments comprise equal lengths or unequal lengths; and wherein an upper segment opposite the straight segment is radially outwardly curved or arcuate relative to the coil axis and connects to the two side segments; and

wherein the at least one straight segment is connected to the two side segments at right angles;

wherein the two side segments have equal lengths;

wherein each of the two side segments connecting to the upper segment define an angle α and an angle β, respectively; and

wherein the angle α and the angle β are each greater than 90.

9. The connector assembly of claim 8 , wherein the connector housing comprises a first housing section attached to a second housing section by welding.

10. The connector assembly of claim 9 , wherein the first housing section and the second housing section are substantially identical and wherein endmost surfaces of the first housing section and second housing section are welded together to form the connector housing having two openings.

11. The connector assembly of claim 9 , wherein an angle of the first housing section is a right angle and an angle of the second housing section is a right angle.

12. The connector assembly of claim 11 , wherein the canted coil spring is located with the housing prior to insertion of a pin into the housing.

13. The connector assembly of claim 8 , wherein an angle between one of the sidewalls and the bottom surface of the housing groove is a right angle, an acute angle, or an obtuse angle.

14. The connector assembly of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of coils are spaced from the two sidewalls.

15. The connector assembly of claim 8 , further comprising a dimple on the arcuate upper segment.

16. The connector assembly of claim 8 , further comprising a pin projecting through a spring center of the canted coil spring.

17. The connector assembly of claim 16 , wherein the pin has a solid end wall at an insertion end.

18. The connector assembly of claim 8 , wherein angle α is equal to angle β, angle α is greater than angle β, or angle α is less than angle β.

19. The connector assembly of claim 8 , wherein the connector housing comprises a first housing section and a second housing section having different shapes.

20. The connector assembly of claim 8 , wherein the connector housing comprises a first housing section and a second housing section and wherein at least one of the first housing section and the housing section comprises a cylindrical plate with an opening.
