Abstract

Methods and systems are disclosed herein for a media guidance application that provides advanced parental control features. As described herein, these advanced parental control features may allow parents to establish parental controls in a dynamic and individualized manner. Moreover, the media guidance application may relieve a first user (e.g., a parent) of the burden of continually monitoring the statistical analysis (e.g., a ratio) of the programming choices of a second user (e.g., a child) by establishing one or more threshold analyzes (e.g., a threshold ratio) that the media guidance application may automatically compare to the statistical analysis of the programming choices of the second user.

Claims (34)

1. A method for automatically adjusting parental controls, the method comprising:

determining a statistical analysis of a relationship between a first program type and a second program type for a first user, wherein the first program type identifies a first plurality of media assets that share a first common characteristic and the second program type identifies a second plurality of media assets that share a second common characteristic;

accessing a social network;

locating a user group on the social network associated with the first user;

determining a threshold analysis of a relationship between the first program type and the second program type for an average user of the user group;

comparing the statistical analysis to the threshold analysis; and

blocking the first program type based on the comparison to prevent the first user from accessing the first plurality of media assets that share the first common characteristic.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first program type is blocked based on the statistical analysis exceeding the threshold analysis.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the statistical analysis is a first ratio of a total amount of time the first user consumed media assets of the first program type to a total amount of time the first user consumed media assets of the second program type, and wherein the threshold analysis is a second ratio of a total amount of time the average user of the user group consumed media assets of the first program type to a total amount of time the average user of the user group consumed media assets of the second program type.

4. The method of claim 2 , further comprising alerting a second user based on the comparison.

5. The method of claim 2 , further comprising determining whether the statistical analysis exceeds the threshold analysis.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein locating the user group on the social network associated with the first user comprises retrieving contacts of an account for the first user on the social network.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein locating the user group on the social network associated with the first user comprises matching demographic information of the first user to demographic information for each user of the user group.

8. The method of claim 5 , wherein users in the user group are selected by the second user.

9. The method of claim 5 , wherein the threshold analysis is determined according to a predetermined schedule.

10. The method of claim 5 , further comprising modifying the threshold analysis based on information received from a data source selected by the second user.

11. A system for automatically adjusting parental controls, the system comprising:

storage circuitry configured to store a relationship between a first program type and a second program type for a first user;

communications circuitry configured to access a social network; and

control circuitry configured to:

determine a statistical analysis of the relationship between a first program type and a second program type for a first user, wherein the first program type identifies a first plurality of media assets that share a first common characteristic and the second program type identifies a second plurality of media assets that share a second common characteristic;

locate a user group on the social network associated with the first user;

determine a threshold analysis of a relationship between the first program type and the second program type for an average user of the user group;

compare the statistical analysis to the threshold analysis; and

block the first program type based on the comparison to prevent the first user from accessing the first plurality of media assets that share the first common characteristic.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first program type is blocked based on the statistical analysis exceeding the threshold analysis.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the statistical analysis is a first ratio of a total amount of time the first user consumed media assets of the first program type to a total amount of time the first user consumed media assets of the second program type, and wherein the threshold analysis is a second ratio of a total amount of time the average user of the user group consumed media assets of the first program type to a total amount of time the average user of the user group consumed media assets of the second program type.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to alert a second user based on the comparison.

15. The system of claim 12 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to determine whether the statistical analysis exceeds the threshold analysis.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the control circuitry configured to locate the user group on the social network associated with the first user is further configured to retrieve contacts of an account for the first user on the social network.

17. The system of claim 15 , wherein the control circuitry configured to locate the user group on the social network associated with the first user is further configured to match demographic information of the first user to demographic information for each user of the user group.

18. The system of claim 15 , wherein users in the user group are selected by the second user.

19. The system of claim 15 , wherein the threshold analysis is determined according to a predetermined schedule.

20. The system of claim 15 , wherein the control circuitry configured to modify the threshold analysis based on information received from a data source selected by the second user.
