Abstract

A dental implant has a body and a plurality of distinct roots that extend outwardly from the main portion that generally define a coronal-apical axis. A porous tantalum metal portion is disposed at the body for engaging bone and the plurality of distinct roots are configured to resist a torsional force that is applied to the dental implant and around the coronal-apical axis.

21 . A body of dental implant, comprising:

a coronal end and an apical end;

a coronal-apical axis extending between the coronal end and the apical end and defined by the body; and

a periphery extending around the coronal-apical axis and configured to engage bone, the periphery having non-circular outer shape in cross-section.

22 . The dental implant of claim 21 , wherein the non-circular outer periphery is configured to engage a circular bore in bone to resist a torsional force applied to the implant and around the coronal-apical axis while the implant is disposed within the bore.

23 . The dental implant of claim 21 , wherein the outer periphery has a closed curved shape extending about the coronal-apical axis.

24 . The dental implant of claim 23 , wherein the outer periphery is generally oval in cross-section substantially transverse to the coronal-apical axis.

25 . The dental implant of claim 21 , wherein the outer periphery includes has three or more distinct face portions.

26 . The dental implant of claim 25 , wherein the outer periphery comprises a regular polygon.

27 . The dental implant of claim 21 , wherein the outer periphery is formed from a porous material.

28 . The dental implant of claim 21 , wherein the outer periphery is at least one of elliptical, obround, and oval in cross-section substantially transverse to the coronal-apical axis.

29 . The dental implant of claim 21 , wherein the outer periphery is configured and dimensioned to grate bone pieces off of a sidewall forming a bore in bone that receives the dental implant.

30 . The dental implant of claim 21 , wherein the outer periphery has a maximum width dimension that is greater than a diameter dimension of the bore.

31 . The dental implant of claim 30 , wherein the maximum width dimension is greater than the diameter dimension of the bore by approximately 0.008 to 0.18 mm.

The dental implant of claim 21 , wherein the body has a main portion and a plurality of roots having porous tantalum and extending apically from the main portion wherein the non-circular outer periphery is at the main body and the plurality of roots extend below the non-circular outer periphery.

The dental implant of claim 32 , wherein at least one of the extending roots has a coronal end portion adjacent the main portion and an apical end portion, and wherein the coronal end portion has a diameter or width dimension greater than the diameter or width dimension of the apical end portion.

34 . The dental implant of claim 21 , wherein the implant has a full length from the apical end to the coronal end, and wherein the non-circular outer periphery extends axially along the implant less than the full-length.

35 . The dental implant of claim 21 , wherein the implant has a coronal end portion, and wherein the outer periphery only extends on the coronal end portion.

36 . The dental implant of claim 21 , wherein the body has a coronal end portion and an apical end portion, and wherein the body tapers inwardly as it extends from the coronal end portion to the apical end portion.

37 . A dental implant comprising:

a body generally defining a coronal-apical axis; and

a porous portion disposed at the body and configured for engaging bone within a bore, the porous portion having a non-circular outer periphery extending around the coronal-apical axis;

wherein the non-circular outer periphery is shaped to engage the bore in the bone to resist a torsional force applied to the implant and around the axis while the implant is disposed within the bore.

38 . The dental implant of claim 37 , wherein the outer periphery is at least one of elliptical, obround, and oval in cross-section transverse to the coronal-apical axis.

39 . The dental implant of claim 38 , wherein the outer periphery has a maximum width dimension that is greater than a diameter dimension of the bore.

40 . The dental implant of claim 39 , wherein the maximum width dimension is greater than the diameter dimension of the bore by approximately 0.008 to 0.18 mm.
