Abstract

A method, apparatus, and computer program product are described herein for controlling a printing device. In an example embodiment, a print line is divided into frames and frame dot states are determined based on neighboring frame dot states. Maximum motor speeds of the printing device may be adjusted so that actual motor speeds change gradually during printing. The print engine may detect a printhead type by sending a signal to the printhead and receiving a response.

Claims (47)

1. A method comprising:

providing a printhead connector comprising a first potential print engine output pin, a second potential print engine output pin, and a print engine input pin;

transmitting a first signal to a printhead on the first potential print engine output pin;

monitoring the print engine input pin for a first response signal;

upon receiving the first response signal on the print engine input pin, determining a printhead type based at least in part on receiving the first response signal; and

in response to not receiving the first response signal:

transmitting a second signal to the printhead on the second potential print engine output pin;

monitoring the print engine input pin for a second response signal; and

upon receiving the second response signal on the print engine input pin, determining the printhead type based at least in part on receiving the second response signal.

2. A method according to claim 1 , further comprising selecting the first potential print engine output pin for the transmission of the first signal based on a previously installed printhead using the first potential print engine output pin to communicate with a print engine.

3. A method according to claim 1 , further comprising configuring a print engine interface based on the determining of the first printhead type.

4. A computer program product comprising at least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having computer-executable program code instructions stored therein, the computer-executable program code instructions comprising program code instructions to:

transmit a first signal to a printhead on a first potential print engine output pin;

monitor a print engine input pin for a first response signal;

upon receiving the first response signal on the print engine input pin, determine a printhead type based at least in part on receiving the first response signal;

in response to not receiving the first response signal:

transmit a second signal to the printhead on a second potential print engine output pin;

monitor the print engine input pin for a second response signal; and

upon receiving the second response signal on the print engine input pin, determine the printhead type based at least in part on receiving the second response signal.

5. A computer program product according to claim 4 , wherein the computer-executable program code instructions further comprise program code instructions to select the first potential print engine output pin for the transmission of the first signal based on a previously installed printhead using the first potential print engine output pin to communicate with a print engine.

6. A computer program product according to claim 4 , wherein the computer-executable program code instructions further comprise program code instructions to configure a print engine interface based on the determining of the first printhead type.

7. A printing device comprising processing circuitry configured to:

transmit a first signal to a printhead on a first potential print engine output pin;

monitor a print engine input pin for a response to the first signal;

upon receiving the response to the first signal on the print engine input pin, determine that a printhead in communication with the processing circuitry is a first type of printhead based at least in part on receiving the response to the first signal; and

when the response to the first signal is not received:

transmit a second signal to the printhead on a second potential print engine output pin;

monitor the print engine input pin for a response to the second signal; and

upon receiving the response to the second signal on the print engine input pin, determine that the printhead is a second type based at least in part on receiving the response to the second signal, the second type being different than the first type.

8. A printing device according to claim 7 , wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to select the first potential print engine output pin for the transmission of the first signal based on a previously installed printhead using the first potential print engine output pin to communicate with a print engine.

9. A printing device according to claim 7 , wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to configure a print engine interface based on the determining of the first printhead type.

10. A method comprising:

providing a printhead connector comprising a first potential print engine output pin, a second potential print engine output pin, and a print engine input pin;

selecting the first potential print engine output pin for the transmission of a first signal based on a previously installed printhead using the first potential print engine output pin to communicate with a print engine;

transmitting the first signal to a printhead on the first potential print engine output pin;

monitoring the print engine input pin for a response signal; and

upon receiving the response signal on the print engine input pin, determining a printhead type based at least in part on receiving the response signal.

11. A computer program product comprising at least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having computer-executable program code instructions stored therein, the computer-executable program code instructions comprising program code instructions to:

select a first potential print engine output pin for transmission of a signal based on a previously installed printhead using the first potential print engine output pin to communicate with a print engine;

transmit the signal to a printhead on the first potential print engine output pin;

monitor a print engine input pin for a response signal; and

upon receiving the response signal on the print engine input pin, determine a printhead type based at least in part on receiving the response signal.

12. A printing device comprising processing circuitry configured to:

select a first potential print engine output pin for transmission of a signal based on a previously installed printhead using the first potential print engine output pin to communicate with a print engine;

transmit the signal to a printhead on the first potential print engine output pin;

monitor a print engine input pin for a response to the signal; and

upon receiving the response to the signal on the print engine input pin, determine that a printhead in communication with the processing circuitry is a first type of printhead based at least in part on receiving the response to the signal.
