Abstract

A method for generating an orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) data unit conforming to a first communication protocol for transmission via a communication channel is described. A first field is generated that conforms to a second communication protocol and has an integer number of OFDM symbols L N having a periodicity L P . A second field is generated that conforms to the first communication protocol, has an integer number of OFDM symbols H N having a periodicity H P , and is based on a frequency sequence having non-zero values at an integer interval K. The first and second fields are modulated using a tone spacing L TS and a tone spacing H TS , respectively. L TS is a multiple M of H TS . The OFDM data unit is generated to include a preamble including the first and second fields. The second field is generated such that H P is proportional to L P and K and inversely proportional to M.
