Abstract

An auxiliary thermal management system is provided that can be used to supplement an electric vehicle's on-board thermal management system during charging, thereby allowing a fast charging system to be used without adding weight or taking up packaging volume in the EV. The auxiliary system is configured to allow it to be coupled, for example using quick-disconnect couplings, to thermal conduits within the vehicle's battery pack.

Claims (25)

1 . A thermal control system for use with an electric vehicle (EV), said EV comprising a battery pack electrically connected to a propulsion motor, said EV further comprising an on-board thermal management system thermally coupled to said battery pack, said thermal control system comprising:

an auxiliary thermal management system, said auxiliary thermal management system external to and independent of said EV, said auxiliary thermal management system co-located with a battery pack charging system, said auxiliary thermal management system configured to provide supplemental cooling to said battery pack during battery pack charging, said auxiliary thermal management system comprising:

a refrigerant-based thermal control loop, wherein said refrigerant-based thermal control loop utilizes a refrigerant;

a thermal control loop utilizing a thermal transfer fluid and a fluid pump, wherein said thermal transfer fluid is not comprised of said refrigerant, and wherein said fluid pump is configured to circulate said thermal transfer fluid when said thermal control loop is coupled to said battery pack;

a refrigerant-fluid heat exchanger thermally coupled to said refrigerant-based thermal control loop and thermally coupled to said thermal control loop; and

a coupling system configured to temporarily thermally couple said thermal control loop to said battery pack of said EV when said battery pack is coupled to said battery pack charging system.

2 . The thermal control system of claim 1 , said auxiliary thermal management system further comprising an expansion valve, wherein said expansion valve in a first position decouples said refrigerant-based thermal control loop from said refrigerant-fluid heat exchanger, and wherein said expansion valve in a second position couples said refrigerant-based thermal control loop to said refrigerant-fluid heat exchanger.

3 . The thermal control system of claim 2 , wherein said expansion valve is adjustable within a range of positions from said first position to said second position, and wherein said range of positions varies a refrigerant flow rate from said refrigerant-based thermal control loop through said refrigerant-fluid heat exchanger.

4 . The thermal control system of claim 1 , wherein said coupling system connects said thermal control loop to said on-board thermal management system, and wherein said fluid pump circulates said thermal transfer fluid through said thermal control loop and said on-board thermal management system.

5 . The thermal control system of claim 4 , wherein said coupling system connects said thermal control loop to said on-board thermal management system via a pair of quick-disconnect couplings.

6 . The thermal control system of claim 4 , wherein said fluid pump is integral to said on-board thermal management system.

7 . The thermal control system of claim 4 , wherein said fluid pump is integral to said auxiliary thermal management system.

8 . The thermal control system of claim 1 , wherein said coupling system connects said thermal control loop to a plurality of cooling conduits integrated within said battery pack, and wherein said fluid pump circulates said thermal transfer fluid through said thermal control loop and said plurality of cooling conduits.

9 . The thermal control system of claim 8 , wherein said coupling system connects said thermal control loop to said plurality of cooling conduits via a pair of quick-disconnect couplings.

10 . The thermal control system of claim 8 , wherein said fluid pump is integral to said auxiliary thermal management system.

11 . The thermal control system of claim 1 , said auxiliary thermal management system further comprising an auxiliary thermal management system controller and said on-board thermal management system further comprising a battery management system (BMS) controller, wherein said BMS controller is configured to connect to said auxiliary thermal management system controller when said thermal control loop is thermally coupled to said battery pack.

12 . The thermal control system of claim 11 , wherein said BMS controller is configured to connect to said auxiliary thermal management system controller via a wireless connection.

13 . The thermal control system of claim 11 , wherein said BMS controller is configured to connect to said auxiliary thermal management system controller via a wired connection.

14 . The thermal control system of claim 11 , wherein said auxiliary thermal management system controller is configured to control operation of said auxiliary thermal management system based on data acquired via said BMS controller.

15 . The thermal control system of claim 11 , wherein said BMS controller is configured to control operation of said auxiliary thermal management system via said auxiliary thermal management system controller.

16 . The thermal control system of claim 1 , said refrigerant-based thermal control loop further comprising a compressor and a condenser.

17 . The thermal control system of claim 16 , said auxiliary thermal management system further comprising a blower fan configured to force air through said condenser.

18 . The thermal control system of claim 1 , said auxiliary thermal management system further comprising a heater coupled to said thermal control loop, said heater configured to heat said thermal transfer fluid within said thermal control loop.

19 . The thermal control system of claim 1 , wherein said thermal transfer fluid is selected from the group consisting of water and water containing an additive.
