Abstract

Described are modulating coatings that are configured to provide an improved release profile of a volatile composition from a base material, wherein the modulating coating includes a barrier substance that is configured to hinder a release of the volatile composition through the modulating coating, and a hygroscopic substance that is configured to facilitate the release of the volatile composition through the modulating coating.

Claims (36)

1. An article comprising

a base material comprising fibers, wherein pores are formed between the fibers;

a volatile composition comprising a member selected from the group consisting of fragrances, flavor compounds, odor-eliminating compounds, aromatherapy compounds, natural oils, essential oils, water-based scents, odor neutralizing compounds, and combinations thereof, wherein the pores of the base material are at least partially filled with the volatile composition; and

a modulating coating comprising

hygroscopic silica nanoparticles having a diameter ranging from 1 nm to 100 nm;

a barrier substance comprising a member selected from a group consisting of maltodextrins, dextrins, polysaccharides, carbohydrates, natural unmodified starches, modified starches, and combinations thereof;

wherein a surface charge of the hygroscopic silica nanoparticles causes the barrier substance to group around the hygroscopic silica nanoparticles through electrostatic interactions in the modulating coating;

wherein the modulating coating is applied as a continuous coating layer to an outer surface of the base material with the barrier substance and the hygroscopic silica nanoparticles dispersed therein;

wherein the barrier substance hinders a release of the volatile composition through the modulating coating;

wherein the hygroscopic silica nanoparticles facilitate the release of the volatile composition through the modulating coating.

2. The article of claim 1 , wherein the article exhibits a ratio of a first day weight-loss value to a last day weight-loss value in a range of 1 to 20 over a 30 day life cycle of the article.

3. The article of claim 1 , wherein the hygroscopic silica nanoparticles are configured to facilitate the release of the volatile composition through the modulating coating by attracting water molecules from a surrounding atmosphere into the modulating coating to displace the volatile composition trapped by the barrier substance within the modulating coating.

4. The article of claim 1 , wherein the barrier substance comprises maltodextrin.

5. The article of claim 4 , wherein a weight ratio of the maltodextrin to the hygroscopic silica nanoparticles ranges from 99:1 to 1:99.

6. The article of claim 4 , wherein a weight ratio of the maltodextrin to the hygroscopic silica nanoparticles ranges from 25:75 to 75:25.

7. The article of claim 4 , wherein a weight ratio of the maltodextrin to the hygroscopic silica nanoparticles is approximately 50:50.

8. The article of claim 1 , wherein the base material comprises a pulp composition.

9. The article of claim 1 , wherein at least some of the volatile composition is located within the modulating coating, wherein the modulating coating further comprises water that is absorbed or adsorbed to the hygroscopic silica nanoparticles.

10. An article comprising

a rod-shaped structural component comprising base material wound around a vertical axis, wherein the base material comprises fibers and pores are formed between the fibers;

a volatile composition comprising a member selected from the group consisting of fragrances, flavor compounds, odor-eliminating compounds, aromatherapy compounds, natural oils, essential oils, water-based scents, odor neutralizing compounds, and combinations thereof, wherein the pores of the base material are at least partially filled with the volatile composition; and

a modulating coating comprising

hygroscopic silica nanoparticles having a diameter ranging from 1 nm to 100 nm;

a barrier substance comprising a member selected from a group consisting of maltodextrins, dextrins, polysaccharides, carbohydrates, natural unmodified starches, modified starches, and combinations thereof;

wherein a surface charge of the hygroscopic silica nanoparticles causes the barrier substance to group around the hygroscopic silica nanoparticles through electrostatic interactions in the modulating coating;

wherein the modulating coating is applied as a continuous coating layer to an outer surface of the rod-shaped structural component with the barrier substance and the hygroscopic silica nanoparticles dispersed therein;

wherein the barrier substance hinders a release of the volatile composition through the modulating coating;

wherein the hygroscopic silica nanoparticles facilitate the release of the volatile composition through the modulating coating.

11. The article of claim 10 , wherein the article exhibits a ratio of a first day weight-loss value to a last day weight-loss value in a range of 1 to 20 over a 30 day life cycle of the article.

12. The article of claim 10 , wherein the hygroscopic silica nanoparticles are configured to facilitate the release of the volatile composition through the modulating coating by attracting water molecules from a surrounding atmosphere into the modulating coating to displace the volatile composition trapped by the barrier substance within the modulating coating.

13. The article of claim 10 , wherein the barrier substance comprises maltodextrin.

14. The article of claim 13 , wherein a weight ratio of the maltodextrin to the hygroscopic silica nanoparticles ranges from 99:1 to 1:99.

15. The article of claim 13 , wherein a weight ratio of the maltodextrin to the hygroscopic silica nanoparticles ranges from 25:75 to 75:25.

16. The article of claim 13 , wherein a weight ratio of the maltodextrin to the hygroscopic silica nanoparticles is approximately 50:50.

17. The article of claim 10 , wherein the base material comprises a pulp composition.

18. The article of claim 10 , wherein at least some of the volatile composition is located within the modulating coating, wherein the modulating coating further comprises water that is absorbed or adsorbed to the hygroscopic silica nanoparticles.
