Abstract

The present invention relates to a metal matrix composite (MMC). The MMC includes a preform formed from a composition having ceramic particles and ceramic fibers and defining a plurality of voids. The metal matrix composite also includes a support element, such as a metal, disposed within the voids of the preform. The MMC has a wear surface defined by both the preform and the support element.

Claims (16)

1. A metal matrix composite comprising:

a preform comprising ceramic particles and ceramic fibers with said preform having an inner surface and an opposing outer surface and defining a plurality of voids;

a support element comprising a metal material, said support element having a particular geometry disposed outside of said preform with said geometry formed of said metal material, and said support element disposed within said plurality of voids of said preform between said inner surface and said outer surface of said preform with said metal material of said support element terminating at said inner surface of said preform such that said inner surface of said preform remains exposed; and

a wear surface defined by said exposed inner surface and said support element such that said wear surface is defined by both said preform and said support element.

2. A metal matrix composite as set forth in claim 1 wherein said ceramic fibers have an aspect ratio of greater than 3:1.

3. A metal matrix composite as set forth in claim 2 wherein greater than 90 percent of the ceramic fibers are randomly orientated in three dimensions.

4. A metal matrix composite as set forth in claim 1 wherein said geometry of said support element defines a plurality of holes for coupling to a vehicle.

5. A metal matrix composite as set forth in claim 1 wherein said preform is present at said wear surface in an amount of from about 10 to 60 percent based on a surface area of said wear surface.

6. A metal matrix composite as set forth in claim 1 wherein said preform is present at said wear surface in an amount of from about 20 to 50 percent based on a surface area of said wear surface.

7. A metal matrix composite as set forth in claim 1 wherein said preform is present at said wear surface in an amount of from about 32 to 38 percent based on a surface area of said wear surface.

8. A metal matrix composite as set forth in claim 1 wherein said outer surface includes a chamfer for minimizing a propagation of said metal material onto said inner surface as said metal material infiltrates said voids of said preform.

9. A metal matrix composite as set forth in claim 1 wherein said ceramic fibers are selected from the group of alumina-silica fibers, alumina-silica-zirconia fibers, carbon-graphite fibers, and combinations thereof.

10. A metal matrix composite as set forth in claim 1 wherein said metal material is selected from the group of aluminum, magnesium, titanium, and combinations thereof.

11. A metal matrix composite as set forth in claim 1 wherein said ceramic particles are selected from the group of elements from period 2, 3, or 4 of the periodic table of the elements.

12. A metal matrix composite as set forth in claim 1 wherein said inner surface of said preform has a predefined configuration with said wear surface being continuous along said inner surface of said preform.

13. A metal matrix composite as set forth in claim 1 wherein said predefined configuration is cylindrical.
