Abstract

A method and apparatus are disclosed for dressing a wound. The apparatus comprises an absorbent layer for absorbing wound exudate, a liquid impermeable, gas permeable filter layer over the absorbent layer, a cover layer comprising at least one orifice and a first liquid and gas permeable transmission layer underlying the absorbent layer. The transmission layer is in fluid communication with the filter layer.

Claims (18)

1. An apparatus for the treatment of a wound by applying negative pressure to the wound, the apparatus comprising:

a first transmission layer configured to allow transmission of fluid away from a wound site and distribute negative pressure over the entire portion of the wound site being treated;

an absorbent layer configured to absorb fluid removed from the wound site, the absorbent layer being disposed over the first transmission layer;

a plurality of columns, wherein each of the plurality of columns is disposed in a corresponding through hole in the absorbent layer; and

a cover layer comprising an aperture and configured to cover the absorbent layer and to create a seal between the cover layer and the wound site,

wherein each of the plurality of columns comprise a porous material.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a second transmission layer disposed over the absorbent layer and the plurality of columns.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of columns comprises a cross-sectional shape corresponding to a cross-sectional shape of the corresponding through hole.

4. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein each of the plurality of columns comprises a rectangular cross-sectional shape.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the absorbent layer comprises a hydrophilic material.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of columns extends vertically in each corresponding through hole.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , the cover layer further comprising a pressure sensitive adhesive on a lower surface.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a top surface of each of the plurality of columns is level with a top surface of the absorbent layer.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a remote negative pressure source connectable to the aperture in the cover layer with at least one conduit and configured to apply negative pressure to the wound site.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , the remote negative pressure source configured to apply negative pressure to the wound site through at least one fluid transmission path passing through the first transmission layer, through at least one of the plurality of columns, and alongside at least one edge of the absorbent layer to draw fluid through the first transmission layer and through at least one of the plurality of columns into the absorbent layer, wherein the at least one fluid transmission path provides a path for gas to pass through the first transmission layer to the aperture in the cover layer while traversing the absorbent layer without flowing therethrough.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a second plurality of columns disposed over the first plurality of columns, wherein each of the second plurality of columns is disposed in a corresponding through hole in the absorbent layer.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein a top surface of each of the first plurality of columns is level with a bottom surface of each of the second plurality of columns.

13. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein a top surface of each of the first plurality of columns contacts a bottom surface of a corresponding column of the second plurality of columns.
