Abstract

The embodiments provide a spinal implant that is configured for lateral insertion into a patient's intervertebral disc space. The spinal implant may have a body having a tapered anterior portion and one or more apertures. The tapered anterior portion allows for concomitant distraction of soft tissue during insertion of the implant. In addition, at least some of the apertures are designed to permit a predetermined amount of nutation by a fixation element. The fixations elements that allow nutation enable the fixation element to toggle from one position to another, for example, during subsidence of the implant in situ.

Claims (20)

1. A spinal implant comprising:

a body configured for lateral insertion between vertebral bodies of a patient's spine, the body having an upper surface, a lower surface, first and second substantially planar sidewalls extending in parallel between the upper and lower surfaces, a posterior portion, and an anterior portion tapering from the upper and lower surfaces to form a curved leading edge extending between the sidewalls, the curved leading edge converging from a wider edge near the first sidewall to a sharpened tip near the second sidewall to allow concomitant distraction of soft tissue during insertion; and

one or more apertures within the posterior portion of the body for receiving at least one fixation element.

2. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the upper surface and lower surface are non-parallel such that the first sidewall has a greater height than the second sidewall to form a wedge-shaped body.

3. The spinal implant of claim 1 , further comprising one or more bores for receiving an imaging marker.

4. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the one or more apertures comprises a superior aperture extending superiorly and an inferior aperture extending inferiorly.

5. The spinal implant of claim 1 , further being configured to have a lordotic profile.

6. The spinal implant of claim 1 , further including anti-migration features.

7. The spinal implant of claim 6 , wherein the anti-migration features include teeth on the upper and lower surfaces of the body.

8. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the implant comprises a biocompatible metal or polymer.

9. The spinal implant of claim 8 , wherein the biocompatible metal or polymer is selected from the group consisting of stainless steel, titanium, titanium alloy, ultra high molecular weight polyethylene and polyetheretherketone.

10. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the implant comprises titanium.

11. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the implant comprises a bioresorbable material.

12. The spinal implant of claim 1 , further comprising a central opening extending between the upper and lower surfaces to facilitate bony ingrowth.

13. A spinal implant comprising:

a body having an upper surface, a lower surface, an anterior portion, a posterior portion, first and second substantially planar sidewalls extending in parallel between the upper and lower surfaces, and a central opening extending therethrough between the upper and lower surfaces to facilitate bony ingrowth therethrough, the upper surface and lower surface being non-parallel such that the first sidewall has a greater height than the second sidewall to form a wedge-shaped body configured for lateral insertion between vertebral bodies of a patient's spine, the anterior portion comprising a leading edge formed from panels extending from the upper and lower surfaces at an angle relative to one another, the leading edge converging from a wider edge near the first sidewall to a sharpened tip near the second sidewall to allow concomitant distraction of soft tissue during insertion; and

one or more apertures within the posterior portion of the body for receiving at least one fixation element.

14. A spinal implant comprising:

a body having an upper surface, a lower surface, a tapered anterior portion, a posterior portion, first and second sidewalls extending between the upper and lower surfaces, and a central opening extending between the upper and lower surfaces to facilitate bony ingrowth, wherein the upper surface and lower surface are non-parallel such that the body has a wedge shape and tapers at the anterior portion to form a leading edge, the leading edge converging from a wider edge near the first sidewall to a sharp tip near the second sidewall so as to be configured for lateral insertion between vertebral bodies of a patient's spine; and

one or more apertures within the posterior portion of the body for receiving at least one fixation element.
