Abstract

When results of a medical diagnostic examination performed on a patient are initially or newly generated and stored into a medical diagnostic provider system, procurement of binding quotes for health-related insurance that requires a medical diagnostic exam to be performed on potential insured parties may be automatically initiated or triggered. Procurement of binding quotes may include, with customer or patient permission, generation of a health profile of the patient based upon the examination results, provision of the health profile to one or more insurance providers (e.g., using an online auction), reception of one or more binding quotes from at least some of the insurance providers, and acceptance of one of the binding quotes on behalf of the patient, thereby entering into a binding contract for insurance. Using the techniques disclosed herein, the patient may automatically be provided with approved health-related insurance coverage upon completion of his or her medical examination.

Claims (49)

1 . An insurance procurement system for providing insurance triggered by medical diagnostics, the insurance procurement system comprising:

a network interface;

one or more processors; and

one or more data storage devices storing computer-executable instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the insurance procurement system to:

receive, via the network interface, results of a medical diagnostic exam from a medical diagnostic provider; and

in response to receiving the results, automatically trigger transmission of respective indications of one or more binding quotes to another computing system, at least in part by

generating or updating a health profile of the consumer to include the results, wherein the results can be utilized by an insurance provider to determine whether a patient meets a risk profile for an insurance policy,

determining a health characteristic of the consumer based upon the results,

identifying a plurality of insurance providers offering insurance for which the consumer is determined to be an eligible insured party, wherein determining whether the consumer is an eligible insured party for an insurance provider is based upon the health characteristic prior to sending the health profile to the insurance provider,

upon identifying the plurality of insurance providers, generating or updating the health profile of the consumer, and obtaining the one or more binding quotes for one or more insurance policies for which the consumer is eligible by providing, using the network interface, the health profile to the identified plurality of insurance providers, the one or more insurance policies being for one or more types of insurance that require a medical diagnostic examination to be performed on a potential insured party, and the one or more binding quotes being an initial set of quotes that are obtained by the insurance procurement system for the one or more insurance policies corresponding to the consumer, and

transmitting, via the network interface, the respective indications of the one or more binding quotes to the other computing system.

2 . The insurance procurement system of claim 1 , wherein:

the obtaining of the one or more binding quotes is based upon the health profile of the consumer and one or more preferred insurance policy terms; and

the one or more preferred insurance policy terms include at least one of: an amount of a premium payment, a length of term, an insurance provider rating, a type of insurance, a payout amount, an annuity amount, a settlement option, or another insurance policy term.

3 . The insurance procurement system of claim 2 , wherein the one or more preferred insurance policy terms are defined by at least one of the consumer, an agent of the consumer, or the insurance provider.

4 . The insurance procurement system of claim 1 , wherein the computer-executable instructions are further executable to:

receive, via the network interface from the other computing system, an indication that one of the one or more binding quotes has been selected; and

bind the selected binding quote, wherein the bound, selected binding quote is for a particular insurance policy for which the consumer is named as an insured party.

5 . The insurance procurement system of claim 1 , wherein the computer-executable instructions are further executable to cause the insurance procurement system to cause underwriting to be performed on a selected binding quote.

6 . The insurance procurement system of claim 1 , wherein at least the portion of a cost of the medical diagnostic exam is credited towards a future premium of a particular insurance policy.

7 . The insurance procurement system of claim 1 , wherein the other computing system is operated and/or provided by the medical diagnostic provider.

8 . The insurance procurement system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more insurance policies include at least one of a life insurance policy, a long-term care insurance policy, or disability insurance policy.

9 . The insurance procurement system of claim 1 , wherein the medical diagnostic exam performed on the consumer (i) includes an invasive procedure, and/or (ii) is performed as part of an annual physical of the consumer.

10 . The insurance procurement system of claim 1 , wherein the results of the medical diagnostic exam are an only indication of a quality of health of the consumer that is received at the insurance procurement system and that corresponds to the one or more binding quotes.

11 . (canceled)

12 . A computer-implemented method for providing insurance triggered by medical diagnostics via an electronic or communications network, the method comprising:

receiving, via the electronic or communications network, results of a medical diagnostic exam from a medical diagnostic provider; and

in response to receiving the results, automatically triggering transmission of respective indications of one or more binding quotes to another computing system, at least in part by

generating or updating a health profile of the consumer to include the results, wherein the results can be utilized by an insurance provider to determine whether a patient meets a risk profile for an insurance policy,

determining a health characteristic of the consumer based upon one or more of the results,

identifying a plurality of insurance providers offering insurance for which the consumer is determined to be an eligible insured party, wherein determining whether the consumer is an eligible insured party for an insurance provider is based upon the health characteristic prior to sending the health profile to the insurance provider,

upon identifying the plurality of insurance providers, generating or updating the health profile of the consumer, and obtaining the one or more binding quotes for one or more insurance policies for which the consumer is eligible by providing, using the network interface, the health profile to the identified plurality of insurance providers, the one or more insurance policies being for one or more types of insurance that require a medical diagnostic examination to be performed on a potential insured party, and the one or more binding quotes being an initial set of quotes that are obtained by the insurance procurement system for the one or more insurance policies corresponding to the consumer, and

transmitting, via the electronic or communications network, the respective indications of the one or more binding quotes to another computing system.

13 . The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , wherein:

the obtaining of the one or more binding quotes is further based upon one or more preferred insurance policy terms; and

the one or more preferred insurance policy terms include at least one of: an amount of a premium payment, a length of term, an insurance provider rating, a type of insurance, a payout amount, an annuity amount, a settlement option, or another insurance policy term.

14 . The computer-implemented method of claim 13 , wherein at least one of the one or more preferred insurance policy terms is defined by at least one of the consumer, an agent of the consumer, or the insurance provider.

15 . The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , further comprising causing underwriting to be performed on a selected binding quote.

16 . (canceled)

17 . The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , wherein the medical diagnostic exam (i) includes an invasive procedure, and/or (ii) is performed as part of an annual physical of the consumer.

18 . The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , wherein the one or more insurance policies include at least one of a life insurance policy, a long-term care insurance policy, or disability insurance policy.

19 . The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , wherein the results of the medical diagnostic exam are an only indication of a quality of health of the consumer that is received at the insurance procurement system and that corresponds to the one or more binding quotes.

20 . (canceled)

21 . The insurance procurement system of claim 1 , wherein the computer-executable instructions are further executable to:

after the medical diagnostic exam has been scheduled for the consumer, transmit a notice of an opportunity to receive personalized insurance offers based upon results of the medical diagnostic exam to the consumer's mobile device; and

after transmitting the notice of the opportunity, receive consent from the consumer, via the consumer's mobile device, for third party analysis of the results of the medical diagnostic exam to generate the personalized insurance offers.

22 . The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , further comprising:

after the medical diagnostic exam has been scheduled for the consumer, transmitting a notice of an opportunity to receive an insurance offer based upon the results of the medical diagnostic exam to the consumer's mobile device; and

after transmitting the notice of the opportunity, receiving consent from the consumer, via the consumer's mobile device, for third party analysis of the results of the medical diagnostic exam to generate the personalized insurance offers.
