Abstract

A gateway device includes a media processor module comprising a gateway application module. The gateway device also includes a router module comprising a gateway abstraction module and an interface handler module. The gateway device also includes a shared interface module in communication with the router module and the media processor module. The shared interface module receives a service request signal from the gateway application module. The gateway abstraction module obtains the service request signal from the shared interface module through an interface handler module. The gateway abstraction module communicates a response signal to the media processor module through the shared interface module. The media processor module performs a function in response to the response signal.

Claims (34)

1. A method of operating a gateway device having a router module, a media processor module and a shared interface module intercommunicating with the router module and the media processor module, said method comprising:

receiving a service request signal at the shared interface module from a gateway application module of the media processor module;

obtaining, at the router module, the service request signal from the shared interface module through an interface handler module of the router module;

communicating the service request signal to a gateway abstraction module of the router module;

communicating a response signal from the gateway abstraction module to the media processor module through the shared interface module; and

performing a function at the media processor module in response to the response signal.

2. The method as recited in claim 1 further comprising validating the service request signal at a validation module of the router module.

3. The method as recited in claim 1 further comprising serializing the service request signal at a first serializer/deserializer module to form a serialized request signal.

4. The method as recited in claim 3 further comprising deserializing the serialized request signal at a second serializer/deserializer module of the router module.

5. The method as recited in claim 3 wherein obtaining the service request signal from the shared interface module comprises obtaining the serialized request signal through a communication channel.

6. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein receiving the service request signal at the shared interface module comprises receiving the service request signal at a shared memory shared by the router module and a media processor module.

7. The method as recited in claim 1 further comprising the step of bypassing an IP protocol stack at the gateway device.

8. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein receiving the service request signal comprises receiving an originator identifier.

9. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein receiving the service request signal comprises receiving a timestamp.

10. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the service request signal comprises a quality of service flow signal.

11. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the service request signal comprises a session creation or session deletion signal.

12. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein performing the function comprises generating a screen display.

13. A gateway device comprising:

a media processor module comprising a gateway application module;

a router module comprising a gateway abstraction module and an interface handler module; and

a shared interface module in communication with the router module and the media processor module, said shared interface module receiving a service request signal from the gateway application module;

said gateway abstraction module obtaining the service request signal from the shared interface module through an interface handler module;

said gateway abstraction module communicating a response signal to the media processor module through the shared interface module; and

said media processor module performing a function in response to the response signal.

14. The gateway as recited in claim 13 wherein the router module comprises a validation module validating the service request signal.

15. The gateway as recited in claim 13 wherein the media processor module comprises a first serializer/deserializer module serializing the service request signal to form a serialized request signal.

16. The gateway as recited in claim 15 wherein the router module comprises a second serializer/deserializer module deserializing the serialized request signal.

17. The gateway as recited in claim 15 wherein the router module obtains the service request signal from the shared interface module through a communication channel.

18. The gateway as recited in claim 13 wherein the shared interface module comprises a shared memory shared by the router module and a media processor module.

19. The gateway as recited in claim 13 wherein the service request signal comprises an originator identifier.

20. The gateway as recited in claim 13 wherein the service request signal comprises a timestamp.

21. The gateway as recited in claim 13 wherein the service request signal comprises a quality of service flow signal.

22. The gateway as recited in claim 13 wherein the service request signal comprises a session creation or session deletion signal.

23. The gateway as recited in claim 13 wherein the function comprises a screen display.
