Abstract

A system includes a first processor and a second processor coupled to the first processor through a high speed connection and a low speed connection. The first processor and the second processor are disposed within a first device. The first processor and the second processor exchange heartbeat signals therebetween through the low speed connection. The first processor communicates a first reset signal through a reset line to the second processor when the first processor does not receive a first heartbeat signal of the heartbeat signals from the second processor. The second processor resets in response to the first reset signal.

Claims (30)

1. A method comprising:

communicating between a media processor and a network processor through a high speed connection, said media processor and said network processor disposed within a gateway device, said high speed connection comprising a first data rate;

exchanging heartbeat signals comprising operating condition data of the gateway device between the gateway processor and the network processor through a low speed connection, said heartbeat signals comprising a first heartbeat signal communicated from the media processor through the low speed connection, said low speed connection separate from and having a second data rate less than the first data rate;

monitoring the first heartbeat signal at the network processor;

when the media processor does not receive the first heartbeat signal of the heartbeat signals, communicating a first reset signal from the media processor to the network processor through a reset line, said reset line separate from the low speed connection and the high speed connection; and

resetting the media processor in response to the first reset signal using the reset line.

2. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the operating condition data comprises CPU load data, interface load data, hard drive temperature data.

3. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein monitoring the first heartbeat signal comprises monitoring the first heartbeat signal at a hardware watchdog module of the network processor.

4. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein resetting the media processor comprises restarting the media processor.

5. A method as recited in claim 1 further comprising:

communicating a second heartbeat signal from the network processor to the media processor through the low speed connection;

monitoring the second heartbeat signal at the media processor;

when no second heartbeat signal is received at the media processor, communicating a second reset signal from the media processor to the network processor through the reset line;

resetting the network processor in response to the second reset signal.

6. A method as recited in claim 5 wherein resetting the network processor comprises restarting the network processor.

7. A method as recited in claim 1 further comprising generating the first reset signal in response to a non-recoverable state.

8. A system comprising:

a media processor;

a network processor coupled to the media processor through a high speed connection, a low speed connection and a reset line, said media processor and said network processor disposed within a gateway device, said high speed connection, said low speed connection and said reset line being separate, said high speed connection comprising a first bit rate, said low speed connection having a second bit rate less than the first bit rate;

said media processor and said network processor exchanging heartbeat signals therebetween through the low speed connection, said heartbeat signals comprising operating condition data of the first device said heartbeat signals comprising a first heartbeat signal communicated from the media processor through the low speed connection;

the network processor comprises a hardware watchdog module that monitors the first heartbeat signal;

said media processor communicating a first reset signal through a reset line to the network processor when the first processor does not receive a first heartbeat signal of the heartbeat signals from the network processor, and

said media processor resetting in response to the first reset signal through the reset line.

9. A system as recited in claim 8 wherein the operating condition data comprises CPU load data, interface load data, hard drive temperature data.

10. A system as recited in claim 8 wherein network processor monitors the first heartbeat signal and wherein the media processor restarts in response to the first reset signal.

11. A system as recited in claim 8 wherein the network processor communicates a second heartbeat signal to the media processor through the low speed connection;

said media processor monitoring the second heartbeat signal and, when no second heartbeat signal is received, said media processor communicating a second reset signal through the reset line;

said network processor resetting in response to the second reset signal.

12. A system as recited in claim 11 wherein the network processor is restarted in response to the second reset signal.

13. A system as recited in claim 8 wherein said media processor resetting in response to a non-recoverable state.
