Abstract

A method for preparing a card containing at least one sequestered compound is provided. The method includes preparing a first waxy phase, preparing a first volatile phase comprising a first sequestered compound, creating a first emulsion from the first waxy phase and the first volatile phase, depositing the first emulsion on the card, and cooling the first emulsion.

Claims (14)

1. A method for preparing a card for use with an experimental animal, the card containing at least one sequestered volatile compound, the method comprising:

preparing a first solid phase, the first solid phase comprising one or more of Octadecane, Nonadecane, Icosane, Heneicosane, Docosane, Tricosane, and/or Tetracosane;

preparing a first volatile phase comprising a first volatile compound, the first volatile compound comprising (i) a carrier comprising a low-molecular-weight hydrocarbon or alcohol and (ii) an odiferous compound that is detectable as an olfactory stimulus by the experimental animal or a drug;

creating a first emulsion of the first volatile phase dispersed inside the first solid phase;

depositing the first emulsion on the card; and

cooling the first emulsion.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein creating the first emulsion comprises vigorously mixing the first solid phase and the first volatile phase into a colloidal suspension such that the first volatile phase forms microvesicles within the first solid phase.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein creating the first emulsion comprises using a sonicator or nebulizer to create the first emulsion.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein preparing the first volatile phase comprises dissolving the first volatile compound into the carrier solution.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein depositing the first emulsion comprises depositing the first emulsion as a series of first droplets.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first solid phase has a melting point between 28° C. and 54° C.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first volatile compound comprises a drug, the drug comprising a trace amine type hormone.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: providing one or more heat-receiving elements on the card, wherein the first emulsion is deposited onto the card opposite from the one or more heat-receiving elements or is deposited directly onto the one or more heat-receiving elements.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: providing one or more metallic heat-receiving elements on the card.
