Abstract

Flocculant compositions containing a cellulosic compound, a superabsorbant polymer, and a flocculant, are useful for preventing the formation of an aqueous phase during the shipping of fly ash slurries.

Claims (48)

1. A bulk fly ash composition for shipping, comprising:

a) fly ash in the form of a wet solid, and having an upper surface;

b) on the upper surface of the fly ash, a shipping management composition which reduces an amount of an upper aqueous phase which forms above a lower solids phase of the fly ash during transport, said composition comprising, in solid form:

b)i) at least one superabsorbent polymer; and

b)ii) at least one flocculant,

wherein the amount of shipping management composition employed is from 0.025 weight percent to about 0.25 wt. % based on the total weight of a) and b).

2. The fly ash composition of claim 1 , wherein the weight ratio of b)i) to b)ii) is from 100:0.01 to 100:10.

3. The fly ash composition of claim 1 , further comprising:

b)iii) at least one cellulosic component, in an amount of from 50 to 90 weight percent based on the weight of the shipping management composition;

b)iv) optionally, porous inorganic particles different from fly ash; and

b)v) optionally one or more surfactants.

4. The fly ash composition of claim 3 , wherein components of the shipping management composition are in the form of a solid layer having a thickness of minimally 2 inches, and a hardness such that the solid layer can be dug out by hand.

5. The fly ash composition of claim 1 , wherein the fly ash in the form of a wet solid is saturated fly ash.

6. The fly ash composition of claim 1 , wherein the shipping management composition comprises:

b)i) 10-20% by weight of superabsorbent polymer based on the weight of the shipping management composition;

b)ii) 0.05 to 2% by weight flocculant based on the weight of the shipping management composition; and

b)iii) cellulosic material.

7. The fly ash composition of claim 1 , wherein the shipping management composition comprises:

b)i) 1 to 18% by weight of superabsorbent polymer;

b)ii) 0.05 to 2% by weight flocculant; and

b)iii) 50 to 90% by weight of cellulosic component;

wherein the weight percentages are based on the total weight of the shipping management composition.

8. The fly ash composition of claim 7 , wherein the shipping management composition further comprises:

b)iv) optionally, porous inorganic particles different from fly ash; and

b)v) from 0.01 to 5 weight percent based on the total weight of the composition of at least one surfactant.

9. The fly ash composition of claim 7 , wherein the shipping management composition further comprises:

b)iv) porous inorganic particles different from fly ash.

10. The fly ash of claim 7 , wherein the cellulosic component b)iii is present in an amount of from 70 to 90 weight percent based on the total weight of the shipping management composition.

11. The fly ash composition of claim 1 , wherein the shipping management composition is in the form of extrudates, granules, or pellets having an average size of from 0.1 mm to 5 mm.

12. The fly ash composition of claim 1 , wherein the shipping management composition is present in the form of a solid layer formed above the lower solids phase of the fly ash.

13. The fly ash composition of claim 1 , wherein the fly ash composition is contained in a railway car.

14. A method for reducing spillage of an aqueous phase from a shipping container during shipment of wet fly ash in the shipping container, comprising:

a) loading wet fly ash into a shipping container, and

b) loading a solid shipment management composition of claim 1 b) into the shipping container above the wet fly ash, said shipment management composition comprising:

b)i) at least one superabsorbent polymer; and

b)ii) at least one flocculant.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the shipping management composition further comprises:

b)iii) at least one cellulosic component, in an amount of from 50 to 90 weight percent based on the weight of the shipping management composition;

b)iv) optionally, porous inorganic particles different from fly ash; and

b)v) optionally one or more surfactants.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the shipping management composition further comprises:

b)iv) optionally, porous inorganic particles different from fly ash; and

b)v) from 0.01 to 5 weight percent of at least one surfactant based on the total weight of the shipping management composition.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the cellulosic component b)iii is present in an amount of from 70 to 90 weight percent based on the total weight of the shipping management composition.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein the shipping management composition is present in a quantity sufficient to form a solid layer above the fly ash, the solid layer having a minimal thickness of 2 inches.

19. The method of claim 15 , wherein the shipping management composition is present in an amount of from 50 to 500 parts by weight per 200,000 parts by weight of wet fly ash.

20. The method of claim 15 , wherein at least one surfactant b)v) is present in the shipping management composition.

21. The method of claim 15 , wherein porous inorganic particles different from fly ash are present in the shipping management composition.
