Abstract

An aircraft storage bin that includes an upper housing, a bucket that cooperates with the upper housing to define a bin interior and is pivotally connected to the upper housing, and at least a first assist spring having a spring force. The bucket is pivotable downwardly between a closed position and an open position and also can be positioned in an intermediate open position between the open and closed positions. The first assist spring is configured to maintain the bucket in the intermediate open position. When a downward force greater than the spring force is placed on the bucket, the bucket is configured to move from the intermediate open position to the open position.

Claims (25)

1. An aircraft storage bin comprising:

an upper housing,

a bucket cooperating with the upper housing to define a bin interior, wherein the bucket is pivotally connected to the upper housing, wherein the bucket is pivotable downwardly between a closed position, an open position and an intermediate open position located between the open and closed positions, wherein the upper housing includes first and second side panels and the bucket includes a bottom and first and second side walls, wherein the bin includes a first connecting unit having a first end pivotally connected to the first side wall of the bucket and a second end pivotally connected to the first side panel,

a first clevis assembly including at least one of a first inner plate and a first outer plate and that extends between the first side panel of the upper housing and the first side wall of the bucket,

a second clevis assembly that includes at least one of a second inner plate and a second outer plate and that extends between the second side panel of the upper housing and the second side wall of the bucket,

a first pivot mechanism operatively associated with the bucket and the first clevis assembly, and

a second pivot mechanism operatively associated with the bucket and the second clevis assembly, and

at least a first assist spring having a spring force, wherein the first assist spring is configured to maintain the bucket in the intermediate open position, and wherein when a downward force greater than the spring force is placed on the bucket, the bucket is configured to move from the intermediate open position to the open position.

2. The aircraft storage bin of claim 1 wherein the first assist spring is preloaded when the bucket moves from the intermediate open position to the open position, and wherein the first assist spring exerts a force on the bucket when the bucket pivots from the open position to the intermediate open position, whereby the first assist spring provides assistance to a user when pivoting the bin toward the closed position.

3. The aircraft storage bin of claim 2 wherein the first assist spring is associated with the first connecting unit.

4. The aircraft storage bin of claim 1 wherein the first connecting unit is at least partially positioned between the first inner and outer plates.

5. The aircraft storage bin of claim 3 wherein the first connecting unit is at least partially positioned in a first cut out in the first side panel of the upper housing.

6. The aircraft storage bin of claim 1 wherein the bucket is pivotable with respect to the upper housing about a bucket pivot axis, and wherein the first assist spring is a coil spring co-axial with the bucket pivot axis.

7. The aircraft storage bin of claim 2 further comprising a second assist spring, wherein the second assist spring is preloaded when the bucket moves from the closed position to the intermediate open position, and wherein the second assist spring exerts a force on the bucket when the bucket pivots from the intermediate open position to the closed position, whereby the second assist spring provides assistance to a user when pivoting the bin toward the closed position.

8. The aircraft storage bin of claim 3 wherein the first connecting unit damps the bucket as it pivots from the closed position to the intermediate open position.

9. The aircraft storage bin of claim 3 wherein the first connecting unit includes a cylinder, and wherein the first assist spring is housed within the cylinder.

10. The aircraft storage bin of claim 1 at least one latch assembly for latching the bucket to the upper housing in the closed position.

11. A method of loading a piece of luggage into the interior of an aircraft storage bin that includes a bucket that is movable with respect to an upper housing having first and second side panels, wherein the bucket has a bottom and first and second side walls and is movable between a first position where the storage bin is closed, a second position where the storage bin is partially open and a third position where the storage bin is fully open, wherein the bin includes a first connecting unit having a first end pivotally connected to the first side wall of the bucket and a second end pivotally connected to the first side panel, a first clevis assembly including at least one of a first inner plate and a first outer plate and that extends between the first side panel of the upper housing and the first side wall of the bucket, a second clevis assembly that includes at least one of a second inner plate and a second outer plate and that extends between the second side panel of the upper housing and the second side wall of the bucket, a first pivot mechanism operatively associated with the bucket and the first clevis assembly, and a second pivot mechanism operatively associated with the bucket and the second clevis assembly, the method comprising the steps of:

releasing a latch such that the bucket moves from the first position to the second position,

placing the piece of luggage into the bin interior and onto a bottom of the bucket, thereby causing the bucket to move from the second position to the third position, and

pivoting the bucket from the third position to the first position, whereby a first assist spring exerts a force on the bucket during movement at least between the third position and the second position.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the first assist spring has a spring force, and wherein the weight of the luggage overcomes the spring force to move the bucket from the second position to the third position.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the bucket moves from the first position to the second position by gravity, and wherein the movement of the bucket is damped at least between the first position and second position.

14. The method of claim 12 wherein the first assist spring is associated with the first connecting unit.

15. The method of claim 11 further comprising the steps of latching the bucket in the closed position, and releasing the latch such that the bucket with the luggage moves from the first position to the third position.
