Abstract

An example method includes determining if first media monitoring data provided by a first meter in a first location identifies a same media as second media monitoring data provided by a second meter in a second location. When the first and second media monitoring data identify the same media, the example includes determining whether spillover occurred based on a time difference between a first timestamp associated with the first media monitoring data and a second timestamp associated with the second media monitoring data. Based on an occurrence of the spillover, the first media monitoring data is stored as credited media monitoring data for the first location indicative of a media exposure to an audience at the first location, and the second media monitoring data is not stored as credited media monitoring data for the second location when the first timestamp is earlier than the second timestamp.

Claims (29)

1. A method to reduce media measurement errors attributable to spillover detected by meters located in different monitored locations, comprising:

determining, with a processor, if first media monitoring data provided by a first meter in a first location identifies a same media as second media monitoring data provided by a second meter in a second location;

when the first and second media monitoring data identify the same media, determining, with the processor, whether spillover occurred based on a time difference between a first timestamp associated with the first media monitoring data and a second timestamp associated with the second media monitoring data; and

based on an occurrence of the spillover, storing, with the processor, the first media monitoring data as credited media monitoring data for the first location and not storing the second media monitoring data as credited media monitoring data for the second location when the first timestamp is earlier than the second timestamp, the credited media monitoring data for the first location indicative of a media exposure to an audience at the first location.

2. The method of claim 1 , further including, based on the occurrence of the spillover, storing the second media monitoring data as the credited media monitoring data for the second location and not storing the first media monitoring data as the credited media monitoring data for the first location when the first timestamp is later than the second timestamp.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the time difference between the first and second timestamps is indicative of the spillover when the time difference is more than a threshold.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the threshold is one of: (a) a first time less than a second time that it takes a first audio signal to travel to the first meter from a second media presentation device associated with the second meter, or (b) a third time less than a fourth time that it takes a second audio signal to travel to the second meter from a first media presentation device associated with the first meter.

5. The method of claim 1 , further including discarding the second media monitoring data when the first timestamp is earlier than the second timestamp.

6. The method of claim 1 , further including sending the credited media monitoring data for the first location to a data collection facility.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second media monitoring data include at least one of signatures or codes.

8. A spillover manager to reduce media measurement errors attributable to spillover detected by meters located in different monitored locations, comprising:

a media comparator to determine if first media monitoring data provided by a first meter in a first location identifies a same media as second media monitoring data provided by a second meter in a second location;

a timestamp comparator to, when the first and second media monitoring data identify the same media, determine whether spillover occurred based on a time difference between a first timestamp associated with the first media monitoring data and a second timestamp associated with the second media monitoring data; and

a media creditor to store the first media monitoring data as credited media monitoring data for the first location in a database based on an occurrence of the spillover when the first timestamp is earlier than the second timestamp, the credited media monitoring data for the first location indicative of a media exposure to an audience at the first location.

9. The spillover manager of claim 8 , wherein the media creditor is further to store the second media monitoring data as credited media monitoring data for the second location in the database based on the occurrence of the spillover when the first timestamp is later than the second timestamp.

10. The spillover manager of claim 8 , wherein the time difference between the first and second timestamps is indicative of the spillover when the time difference is more than a threshold.

11. The spillover manager of claim 10 , wherein the threshold is one of: (a) a first time less than a second time that it takes a first audio signal to travel to the first meter from a second media presentation device associated with the second meter, or (b) a third time less than a fourth time that it takes a second audio signal to travel to the second meter from a first media presentation device associated with the first meter.

12. The spillover manager of claim 8 , wherein the media creditor is further to discard the second media monitoring data when the first timestamp is earlier than the second timestamp.

13. The spillover manager of claim 8 , further including a transmitter to transmit the credited media monitoring data for the first location to a data collection facility.

14. The spillover manager of claim 8 , wherein the first and second media monitoring data include at least one of signatures or codes.

15. A tangible computer readable storage medium comprising instructions that, when executed, cause a computing device to at least:

determine if first media monitoring data provided by a first meter in a first location identifies a same media as second media monitoring data provided by a second meter in a second location;

when the first and second media monitoring data identifying the same media, determine whether spillover occurred based on a time difference between a first timestamp associated with the first media monitoring data and a second timestamp associated with the second media monitoring data; and

based on an occurrence of the spillover, store the first media monitoring data as credited media monitoring data for the first location and not store the second media monitoring data as credited media monitoring data for the second location when the first timestamp is earlier than the second timestamp, the credited media monitoring data for the first location indicative of a media exposure to an audience at the first location.

16. The computer readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the instructions are further to cause the computing device to, based on the occurrence of the spillover, store the second media monitoring data as the credited media monitoring data for the second location and not store the first media monitoring data as the credited media monitoring data for the first location when the first timestamp is later than the second timestamp.

17. The computer readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the time difference between the first and second timestamps is indicative of the spillover when the time difference is more than a threshold.

18. The computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the threshold is one of: (a) a first time less than a second time that it takes a first audio signal to travel to the first meter from a second media presentation device associated with the second meter, or (b) a third time less than a fourth time that it takes a second audio signal to travel to the second meter from a first media presentation device associated with the first meter.

19. The computer readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the instructions are further to cause the computing device to discard the second media monitoring data when the first timestamp is earlier than the second timestamp.

20. The computer readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the instructions are further to cause the computing device to send the credited media monitoring data for the first location to a data collection facility.
