Abstract

Techniques are disclosed for evaluating an ongoing VoIP over WiFi call for purposes of determining when to hand it off to a circuit-switched cellular network connection. 802.11 WiFi call quality values X(i) over a sampled time period (N) of (j) samples for an ongoing telephone call over an 802.11 WiFi communication link are obtained and stored. An instantaneous annoyance value a(j) for each of the stored call quality values X(j) within sampled time period (N) is calculated. A current accumulated annoyance value A(i) by summing the instantaneous annoyance values a(j) is also calculated. The accumulated annoyance value A(i) is compared to a handoff threshold value H(i). A handoff of the telephone call from the 802.11 WiFi communication link to a circuit-switched cellular communication link is initiated when the accumulated annoyance value A(i) is greater than the handoff threshold value H(i).

Claims (35)

1. At least one machine-readable non-transitory medium comprising a set of instructions that in response to being executed on a computing device cause the computing device to:

obtain instantaneous 802.11 WiFi call quality values for a telephone call over an 802.11 WiFi communication link over a time period N, wherein N defines a relevant timespan within which to store the instantaneous WiFi call quality values for calculations;

calculate instantaneous annoyance values based on a plurality of the instantaneous WiFi call quality values for N;

define a first call quality threshold value (C 0 ) wherein WiFi call quality values less than or equal to C 0 indicate good call quality such that the instantaneous annoyance values set to zero (0);

calculate an instantaneous accumulated annoyance value by summing the instantaneous annoyance values;

determine whether the instantaneous accumulated annoyance value exceeds an instantaneous handoff threshold value; and

initiate a handoff of the telephone call from the 802.11 WiFi communication link to a circuit-switched cellular communication link when the instantaneous accumulated annoyance value is greater than the instantaneous handoff threshold value.

2. The at least one machine-readable non-transitory medium of claim 1 , the WiFi call quality values comprising a combination of jitter, latency, dropped packets, link speed, and signal strength.

3. The at least one machine-readable non-transitory medium of claim 1 , comprising a set of instructions that in response to being executed on a computing device cause the computing device to:

create a set of smoothed call quality values from the obtained set of call quality values, the smoothed call quality values determined by multiplying a weighting factor that reduces the abruptness of call quality changes from sample index to sample index.

4. The at least one machine-readable non-transitory medium of claim 3 , comprising a second call quality threshold value (C 1 ) wherein the smoothed call quality values greater than C 1 indicate impaired call quality enough to lower the handoff threshold value.

5. An apparatus, comprising:

a processor component; and

communication link handoff (CLH) logic to be executed by the processor component to:

obtain instantaneous 802.11 WiFi call quality values for a telephone call over an 802.11 WiFi communication link over a time period N, wherein N defines a relevant timespan within which to store the instantaneous WiFi call quality values for calculations;

calculate instantaneous annoyance values based on a plurality of the instantaneous WiFi call quality values for N;

define a first call quality threshold value (C 0 ) wherein WiFi call quality values less than or equal to C 0 indicate good call quality such that the instantaneous annoyance values set to zero (0);

calculate an instantaneous accumulated annoyance value by summing the instantaneous annoyance values;

determine whether the instantaneous accumulated annoyance value exceeds an instantaneous handoff threshold value; and

initiate a handoff of the telephone call from the 802.11 WiFi communication link to a circuit-switched cellular communication link when the instantaneous accumulated annoyance value is greater than the instantaneous handoff threshold value.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 , the WiFi call quality values comprising a combination of jitter, latency, dropped packets, link speed, and signal strength.

7. The apparatus of claim 5 , the communication link handoff (CLH) logic to be executed by the processor component to:

create a set of smoothed call quality values from the obtained set of call quality values, the smoothed call quality values determined by multiplying a weighting factor that reduces the abruptness of call quality changes from sample index to sample index.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , comprising a second call quality threshold value (C 1 ) wherein the smoothed call quality values greater than C 1 indicate impaired call quality enough to lower the handoff threshold value.

9. A computer implemented method operative on a processor component, the method comprising:

obtaining instantaneous 802.11 WiFi call quality values for a telephone call over an 802.11 WiFi communication link over a time period N, wherein N defines a relevant timespan within which to store the instantaneous WiFi call quality values for calculations;

calculating instantaneous annoyance values based on a plurality of the instantaneous WiFi call quality values for N;

defining a first call quality threshold value (C 0 ) wherein WiFi call quality values less than or equal to C 0 indicate good call quality such that the instantaneous annoyance values set to zero (0);

calculating an instantaneous accumulated annoyance value by summing the instantaneous annoyance values;

determining whether the instantaneous accumulated annoyance value exceeds an instantaneous handoff threshold value; and

initiating a handoff of the telephone call from the 802.11 WiFi communication link to a circuit-switched cellular communication link when the instantaneous accumulated annoyance value is greater than the instantaneous handoff threshold value.

10. The computer implemented method of claim 9 , the WiFi call quality values comprising a combination of jitter, latency, dropped packets, link speed, and signal strength.

11. The computer implemented method of claim 9 , comprising:

creating a set of smoothed call quality values from the obtained set of call quality values, the smoothed call quality values determined by multiplying a weighting factor that reduces the abruptness of call quality changes from sample index to sample index.

12. The computer implemented method of claim 11 , comprising a second call quality threshold value (C 1 ) wherein the smoothed call quality values greater than C 1 indicate impaired call quality enough to lower the handoff threshold value.
