Abstract

The present invention is directed to a polypropylene composition (C), an article comprising the polypropylene composition (C) as well as the use of the polypropylene composition (C) to reduce paintability failure of a molded article.

Claims (50)

1. Polypropylene composition (C), the polypropylene composition (C) comprising:

(a) 30.0 to 60.0 wt.-%, based on the total weight of the composition, of a heterophasic propylene copolymer (HPP) having a melt flow rate MFR 2 (230° C.) measured according to ISO 1133 in the range of 10.0 to 40.0 g/10 min, comprising

(a1) a polypropylene matrix (M), and

(a2) an elastomeric propylene copolymer (E1)

(b) 5.0 to 30.0 wt.-%, based on the total weight of the composition, of a polypropylene homopolymer (PP-H1), and

(c) 25.0 to 35.0 wt.-%, based on the total weight of the composition, of a mineral filler (F) being selected from the group consisting of talcum, wollastonite, caolin and mica,

wherein the polypropylene composition (C) has a melt flow rate MFR 2 (230° C.) measured according to ISO 1133 in the range of 10.0 to 25.0 g/10 min, a tensile modulus in the range from 2800 to 4500 MPa and a Charpy notched impact strength at +23° C. in the range of 4 to 20 kJ/m 2 .

2. The polypropylene composition (C) according to claim 1 , wherein the polypropylene composition (C) has

a Coefficient of Linear Thermal Expansion (CLTE) −30/+80° C. of ≦45 μm/mK.

3. The polypropylene composition (C) according to claim 1 , wherein the heterophasic propylene copolymer (HPP) has

(a) a melt flow rate MFR 2 (230° C.) measured according to ISO 1133 in the range of 10.0 to 25.0 g/10 min,

and/or

(b) an intrinsic viscosity (IV) in the range of 1.8 to 4.0 dl/g, measured as the intrinsic viscosity (IV) of the xylene cold soluble (XCS) fraction of the heterophasic propylene copolymer (HPP),

and/or

(c) a comonomer content of 25.0 to 50.0 wt.-%, based on the total weight of the xylene cold soluble fraction of the heterophasic propylene copolymer (HPP), wherein the comonomers preferably are ethylene and/or a C 4 to C 12 olefin.

4. The polypropylene composition (C) according to claim 1 , wherein the polypropylene matrix (M) of the heterophasic propylene copolymer (HPP)

(a) is a propylene homopolymer (PP-H2) or a random propylene copolymer (PP-C) with comonomers selected from ethylene and/or C 4 to C 12 α-olefins,

and/or

(b) has a melt flow rate MFR 2 (230° C.) measured according to ISO 1133 in the range of 30.0 to 300.0 g/10 min,

and/or

(c) has a xylene cold soluble (XCS) content no higher than 5.0 wt.-%.

5. The polypropylene composition (C) according to claim 1 , wherein the polypropylene homopolymer (PP-H1) has a melt flow rate MFR 2 (230° C.) measured according to ISO 1133 in the range of 70.0 to 150.0 g/10 min.

6. The polypropylene composition (C) according to claim 1 , wherein the mineral filler (F) is talc.

7. The polypropylene composition (C) according to claim 1 , wherein the polypropylene composition (C) comprises 5.0 to 15.0 wt.-%, based on the total weight of the composition, of an elastomeric copolymer (E2) comprising units derived from ethylene and C 3 to C 8 α-olefins.

8. The polypropylene composition (C) according to claim 7 , wherein the polypropylene composition (C) comprises the heterophasic propylene copolymer (HPP) and the polypropylene homopolymer (PP-H1) in an amount of below 65.0 wt.-%, based on the total weight of the composition.

9. The polypropylene composition (C) according to claim 8 , wherein the elastomeric copolymer (E2) has

(a) a density of equal or less than 935 kg/m 3 ,

and/or

(b) a melt flow rate MFR 2 (190° C.) measured according to ISO 1133 in the range of 0.5 to 30.0 g/10 min.

10. The polypropylene composition (C) according to claim 7 , wherein

(a) the weight ratio of heterophasic propylene copolymer (HPP) to the polypropylene homopolymer (PP-H1) [HPP/PP-H1] is from 12.0:1.0 to 1.0:1.0,

and/or

(b) the weight ratio of heterophasic propylene copolymer (HPP) to the mineral filler (F) [HPP/F] is from 3:1 to 1:1,

and/or

(c) the weight ratio of heterophasic propylene copolymer (HPP) and polypropylene homopolymer (PP-H1) to the mineral filler (F) [HPP+PP-H1/F] is below 4.0,

and/or

(d) the weight ratio of heterophasic propylene copolymer (HPP) to the elastomeric copolymer (E2) [HPP/E2] is below 8.0.

11. Article comprising a polypropylene composition (C), the polypropylene composition (C) comprising:

(a) 30.0 to 60.0 wt.-%, based on the total weight of the composition, of a heterophasic propylene copolymer (HPP) having a melt flow rate MFR 2 (230° C.) measured according to ISO 1133 in the range of 10.0 to 40.0 g/10 min, comprising

(a1) a polypropylene matrix (M), and

(a2) an elastomeric propylene copolymer (E1)

(b) 5.0 to 30.0 wt.-%, based on the total weight of the composition, of a polypropylene homopolymer (PP-H1), and

(c) 25.0 to 35.0 wt.-%, based on the total weight of the composition, of a mineral filler (F) being selected from the group consisting of talcum, wollastonite, caolin and mica,

wherein the polypropylene composition (C) has a melt flow rate MFR 2 (230° C.) measured according to ISO 1133 in the range of 10.0 to 25.0 g/10 min, a tensile modulus in the range from 2800 to 4500 MPa and a Charpy notched impact strength at +23° C. in the range of 4 to 20 kJ/m 2 .

12. The article according to claim 11 , wherein the article is an automotive article.

13. The polypropylene composition (C) according to claim 1 , wherein the polypropylene composition (C) keeps paintability failure of a molded article equal or below 15%.

14. The polypropylene composition (C) according to claim 1 , wherein the polypropylene composition (C) keeps the paintability failure of automotive articles equal or below 15%.

15. The polypropylene composition (C) according to claim 1 , wherein the mineral filler (F) is talc having an average particle size d50 in the range of 0.5 to 20.0 μm.

16. The article according to claim 11 , wherein the article is an exterior or interior automotive article selected from the group consisting of bumpers, body panels, rocker panels, side trims, step assists, spoilers and dash boards.

17. The polypropylene composition (C) according to claim 1 , wherein the polypropylene composition (C) keeps paintability failure of exterior or interior automotive articles equal or below 15%.
